Black screen after GRUB on a bootable usb

Post by midohima » Fri Dec 31, 2021 10:46 am

This my first time to try Linux Mint and it was great experience. I found it too much lighter than windows, more customizable and even has pretty much programs and drivers out of the box.
I was able to run Linux mint from a bootable USB drive which I made as a presistence drive using Rufus for just once and it operated really fine for every thing. But after I restarted my system, Mint loads to a Black screen after GRUB menu. I could hear the login melody but the screen is just Black. I restarted again and again, it responds a time and give me Black screen too many times. How can I solve this issue?
I’m on a PC with Gigabyte GA 880 main board, Phenom II X4 925 processor, integrated Radeon HD 4250 graphics
Thank you in advance

Without some technical information about the machine, we can’t help you. Please post an inxi -Fxpmzr report. This will give us a concise overview of your hardware and how Mint sees it per How to get help .

Here is how to generate the report and post it:
Boot from your installation media.
Open a terminal window (Ctrl-Alt-t). Make it fullscreen to avoid unneeded linebreaks or chopped lines. Copy the following code and paste into the terminal (Ctrl-Shft-V) then hit Enter/Return:

exactly as it has been typed here.

Go to Edit, Select All, and then Copy, come back here, click on reply then code tags, , and then paste.
The results will help us to help you.

If you have found the solution to your initial post, please open your original post, click on the pencil, and add (Solved) to the Subject , it helps other users looking for help, and keeps the forum clean.

To run a command as administrator (user «root»), use «sudo «.
See «man sudo_root» for details.

That’s not requested code (notice F capital letter inxi -Fxpmrz ).

Any way, to avoid black screen do as indicated here (Solving freezes during the boot sequence) to edit first boot option in Linux Mint Live»s GRUB menu and write nomodeset in linux kernel line or choose Compatibility mode .

Linux USB Boot results in black screen

I’m trying to install Linux alongside Windows 8 on my new Asus Zenbook UX32VD, which has both an Intel HD 4000 and a NVidia 620M I’ve been having quite a few problems booting up linux via USB so I can install it. So far, I’ve tried Linux Mint Debian edition, Crunchbang, Debian, and Ubuntu. What usually happens is that after the initial loading, I see the mouse cursor for a couple of seconds, and then the screen goes black, for good. The rest of the system seems to keep going, but I have no image whatsoever, and have to shutdown the hard way. However, in some of my attempts with Ubuntu and Mint, I managed to boot. What changed those times? I have no clue. In one of those attempts, I finished the instalation of Mint, but after rebooting to the installed system, the same problem occurred I also tried adding boot options, particularly nomodeset , and i915.modeset=1 driver=intel . The first time I tried each of them, Mint booted correctly, making me think it was the solution. But later attempts resulted in the same black screen But with Debian, it seems everything goes well, and I managed to install it. But I’m currently having some problems configuring the system, particularly the Fn keys (any tips on that?) So, my question is, how should I proceed in order to boot correctly, knowing that this is probably some kind of problem with detecting the graphics card? I realize that newer laptops are very likely to have problems like these, but if there’s a solution for it already, I couldn’t find it anywhere.

I think the question is pretty much obvious, even though i didn’t ask it explicitly. but i’ll edit it since you asked

When you boot normally and get the blank screen, can you see (in some strong light or smth) the desktop? (It would mean that display backlight is off).

Have you tried disabling one video card and checking the results? Most probably there is a conflict with the system choosing the default one.
