[SOLVED] No sound in VLC in Mint 12
Post by lexx » Thu Dec 01, 2011 10:10 am
I’m new to mint and just installed mint 12 64bit. But I’v been playing with Ubuntu for about a year.
Can’t get VLC to play sound. I’ve tried play mp3 and 3 or 4 different video formats. I’ve tried same files in other programs and they work fine. I’ve looked at the settings and tried changing the output modules which had no effect. I could have made a stupid misstake.
What should I try next?

Try setting ‘output module’ to ALSA audio output in settings dialog under audio tab.
I also have set my output device.

I just gave that a go without much luck—still no sound. Bizarre. Not really sure how to troubleshoot it either.

I have exactly the same problem, and I don’t think it comes from the config because, I copied the .config/vlc/vlcrc file from my working ubuntu system, and after ensuring the vlc configuration was updated, I still has no sound

Try this instead:
In the vlc audio settings,
Select UNIX OSS audio as the output and ex: /dev/dsp or whatever your sound device mount point is.
It solved the issue for me.

No sound in VLC
I am facing this problem from a couple of days. When I play a video in default movie player, voice comes normally but when I play the same in VLC, there is no audio and only video comes.
The same happens with Banshee Music Player. In its case there is no audio again while if the same song is played in rhythmbox, audio comes.
Can someone help me with this one.

I have check the Preference->Audio n Sound is enabled.
In Output Module, Alsa Output Module is selected.
I have already tried reinstalling vlc, but it was of no use.

That looks good. Go to Tools -> Messages in VLC and set the debug level to 2 and play any file. put the result here. Its better you put that in code tag, so that it will be easy to read
Why do the video players make no sound?
I get sound just fine using Chrome (e.g. YouTube) or with Rhythmbox playing an MP3. However, VLC, Xine, and the default Ubuntu «Videos» make no sound, whether with MP4, FLV, or MP3. How do I fix this? Ubuntu 14.10 Lenono M30-70
Apparently that was not the issue. When I gave the command to install ubuntu-restricted-extras, I got «ubuntu-restricted-extras is already the newest version.»
did you try to switch/change audio outputs in vlc preferences? By default it’s automatic try manually to switch it to alsa and then pulse etc.

In VLC, in Audio settings, I chose Reverse Stereo, and suddenly I got sound back!
Following that: Left, Right, and even regular Stereo now work.
On VLC > Right Click > Audio > Audio Devices > I had 2 devices HDMI Audio and Built in Analog Audio . Selected one was the HDMI Audio. I changed it to Analog Audio and both the players were fixed after that change.
Audio might be muted. In VLC, right-click on the VLC screen, in the context menu select Audio and see if Mute is checked.
To add to this just try clicking on «Mute». I didn’t notice any change in it showing whether it was checked or not after selecting.
As others have mention this is likely a restricted extras issue. The easiest way to install them is to open a terminal and type:
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras
You will need to select ‘Ok’ for the Microsoft EULA: just tab down until it’s selected and press the Enter key.
Apparently that was not the issue. When I gave that command, I got «ubuntu-restricted-extras is already the newest version.»
Same ditto problem was with me and I got it resolved in this way
Audio Settings -> Audio Device -> Changed it and switched back
Same thing happened to me with VLC and Totem in Ubuntu 16.04. However in some other players like mpv sound was working fine.
I had the feeling it had something to do with last time I opened VLC. I was watching a movie on the TV (by HDMI connection) so back then I configured the audio to be played by HDMI output. I powered off the laptop without reverting the configuration.
But now I was not connected to HDMI and in sound configuration only internal speakers were showing.
In the end, the configuration option to blame was to be found in VLC itself. While playing, Audio > Audio device > (select your internal speakers). I seems it did not revert itself to internal speakers, because HDMI output was still selected. Now even Totem is working.
I hope this experience helps someone!
this seemed to be my issue as well, except that to fix it i plugged back into the HDMI connection, then went to my audio settings and switched back to Speakers, then disconnected the HDMI.
No sound If you don’t hear any sound, try: (a) click System -> Preferences -> Sounds. Then click a sound in the bottom list, and make sure that it’s not already selected. You should hear the sound you selected. If not, make sure your speakers are working and that your volume is up. Try clicking another sound in the list, after ajusting your volume. Also make sure your speakers are working. Once you’re done, select the sound it was on before and click OK. (b) downloading VLC Media Player by clicking Applications -> Ubuntu Software Centre or Applications -> Add/Remove Appications. Search for «VLC Media Player» and download the program with the orange cone icon. If you don’t see an orange cone, the icon might be a cardboard box with all kinds of stuff sticking out of it. In that case, look at the discriptions. Install VLC and then use it to play your movie or DVD.
If this doesn’t work, just try to install media codes.
Thanks. (A) I did try out the Sounds configuration GUI. With a movie playing in VLC, this GUI does show VLC, and even with the volume at max, no sound comes from the movie. (B) I have indeed installed VLC, and like other movie players, it does not work.
If you changed manually once the output in your sound settings (for me that was an HDMI audio controller to have the sound of my home cinema), disconnecting the HDMI cable and trying to hear back your built in audio card does not work. I had to connect back to the HDMI cable, change manually the output to my built in audio and then it worked.
Open nautillus. Open your home folder. Press Ctrl+H. Open the .config folder. Delete the vlc folder. Audio goes back to normal.

No audio when streaming using cvlc under debian squeeze
Post by term0r » 16 Jul 2010 01:36
For two or three days I’ve been trying to get VLC streaming working using a webcam as input (/dev/video0) and a line-in as input (/dev/dsp0) or as an ALSA input.
Initially I was using the Debian etch vlc, but hit many issues with the lack of codecs supported, especially with no mp3lame support.
So, built a squeeze box from scratch, and have done the following:
Installed ALSA, configured using alsamixer, made the various dev’s using snddevices. Checked that I get the input (my cellphone at the moment playing mp3s) coming out of the speaker socket on the sound card. All seems good.
I followed a few guides for getting ffmpeg and vlc compiled from scratch. In the end I checked ffmpeg out from the svn and compiled with:
./configure —enable-gpl —enable-postproc —enable-pthreads —enable-libfaac —enable-libmp3lame —enable-libtheora —enable-libx264 —enable-shared —enable-nonfree —enable-libvorbis —enable-libgsm —enable-libspeex —enable-libschroedinger —enable-libdirac —enable-avfilter —enable-avfilter-lavf —enable-libdc1394 —enable-libopenjpeg —enable-libopencore-amrnb —enable-libopencore-amrwb —enable-version3 —enable-gpl —enable-libgsm —enable-libmp3lame make make install
./configure —enable-merge-ffmpeg —enable-v4l —enable-dshow —enable-sout —disable-skins2 —enable-twolame —disable-xcb —disable-nls —disable-mozilla —disable-live555 make make install
I basically have no issues getting video working when using mms as my output. A command line similar to this works fine:
But I have no audio at all, just silence. When running the above command I think a key part of the output from vlc is:
[0x9633fe4] main input debug: adding slave input ‘alsa://hw:0,0′ [0x9633fe4] main input debug: `alsa://hw:0,0′ gives access `alsa’ demux `’ path `hw:0,0′ [0x9633fe4] main input debug: creating demux: access=’alsa’ demux=» path=’hw:0,0′ [0x96354c4] main demux debug: looking for access_demux module: 1 candidate [0x96354c4] access_alsa demux debug: opening device ‘hw:0,0’ [0x96354c4] access_alsa demux debug: ‘hw:0,0′ is an audio device [0x96354c4] access_alsa demux debug: opened adev=`hw:0,0’ stereo 48000Hz [0x96354c4] access_alsa demux debug: new audio es 2 channels 48000Hz [0x96354c4] main demux debug: using access_demux module «access_alsa» [0x96354c4] main demux debug: TIMER module_need() : 6.715 ms — Total 6.715 ms / 1 intvls (Avg 6.715 ms)
arecord -r 48000 -c 1 -t wav foobar.wav
I suspected video was interfering with audio, so tried with no video at all:
I then wanted to get rid of the streaming part of things so tried something along these lines:
That made an mp4 file with silence as the audio.
So, my biggest hunch is that vlc is only hearing silence in terms of its audio input. This seemed to also be the case when I was not using the alsa input method of vlc and instead refering to the /dev/dsp0 itself. I think my command line for this was something along the lines of:
Can anyone help with this, or suggest anything? I can include the full output of what happens when vlc starts, but basically it happily opens either the alsa hw0,0 or the /dev/dsp0 device depending on what method I am using. I’m pretty experienced with linux, but have virtually no experience with streaming or codecs.
Does anyone maybe have a command line already that does what I’m trying to do. Basically, take a video source, an audio source (either from a dsp or preferably from ALSA) and stream it? I don’t really mind if I use mms, or some http method, but I would like the total bandwidth to be less than 1mbit. Ideally something more like 384 kbit with 256 for vid and 128 for audio. Does that seem reasonable?
I don’t currently have X installed but can install it if required for testing.

Adding v4l2 support seemed to be the key to fixing this.
I ended up using the following cmd line for now:
