Linux vnc server no password

How to set a VNC password?

Can anyone say me how to set a VNC password in Ubuntu? Such that if anyone access my machine through VNC it should prompt for a password.

You can set a password when you open Remote Desktop.

Or with vncpasswd you can also set the password for the vnc-server.

So if someone want to connect to you, he has to enter the password.

Which vnc server do you use? Start Options: vnc4server: Command to start: vncserver . Then run vncpasswd . tightvncserver: Command to start: tightvncserver . Then run vncpasswd . Gnome build in vino-server: Command to start: vino-preferences And Activate: «Allow other users to view your desktop» and set a password.

In my case, I forgot the password to the VNC server. For my situation, the final target was TightVNC running on Ubuntu 18.04 which I needed to reach from my mac.

You first kill the existing VNC sessions with

Use something like this to find out if you’ve killed all sessions. Usually, the vncserver is running on port 5901:

sudo netstat -peanut | grep "vncserver"

If there is something, repeat the kill command with the appropriate vncserver -kill :2 or whatever listing. If nothing, then you can remove the default original password setting with:

And you’ll be prompted again for a new password. The daemon should run on port 5901, which you can query with the netstat command above.

Enable VNC Password Authentication

Environment

SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 11 (SLED 11)
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 (SLES 11)
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10
SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10

Situation

Remote access has been enabled in YaST under Network Devices —> Remote Administration (VNC). When connecting from a VNC viewer a session login is brought up with no VNC login required.

Resolution

Step 1
On the remote system open a terminal window and «su» to become the root user (if not already logged in as root) then enter the command:

Enter the passwords as prompted. The first one for full remote access and the second for read-only access. This will create and store the passwords in the file «/root/.vnc/passwd».

Step 2
Open YaST and select Network Services—>Network Services (xinetd). Scroll down the list to the «vnc1» selection and click on it then click on the «Edit» button.

Change the «User:» selection to «root» (the default setting is «nobody»).

Add the following text to the end of the «Server Arguments» line. Be sure to include a space between the last entry and this new argument:

-rfbauth /root/.vnc/passwd

Connect from the VNC viewer and you should now be asked for the vnc password prior to viewing the session login.

Additional Information

You will notice that multiple VNC sessions can be enabled in xinetd. The VNC password can be enabled on all of them by changing the user setting to root and adding the same server argument.

    vnc4server: No password configured for VNC Auth

    I want to use my Ubuntu Server 14.04.1 LTS as a VNC server. I installed lightdm and vnc4server. On the client, I installed xvnc4viewer. Whenever I try to connect to the server, after I typed in my password, I get:

    Here is my /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf:

    [SeatDefaults]
    autologin-user=
    user-seesion=ubuntu
    greeter-session=unity-greeter
    allow-guest=false
    [XDMCPServer]
    enabled=true
    port=177
    [VNCServer]
    enabled=true
    command=/usr/bin/Xvnc4 -SecurityTypes None -rfbauth /etc/vncpasswd
    listen-address=192.168.178.23
    port=5900
    width=1280
    height=1024
    depth=24

    192.168.178.23 being the IP adress of my server.

    To set the VNC password, I ran sudo vncpasswd /etc/vncpasswd. I had to run it as sudo to get write access.

    What can I do to make it work?
