How to Install the Broadcom BCM43142 Driver on Kali Linux — In this article, I will explain the steps to install the Broadcom BCM43142 802.11b/g/n driver on Kali Linux. If you install Linux on a laptop that uses the BCM43142 chipset, the wifi driver will not automatically activate, which means you have to install the wifi driver manually so that the wifi on your laptop can be used.

From my experience using a laptop with a Broadcom BCM43142 chipset in several other Linux distributions such as Arch Linux, Manjaro, Debian and of course Kali Linux, this chipset does not yet support. Therefore I have to outsmart it so that the wifi chipset can function normally.

How to install the BCM43142 wifi driver on kali linux

To install the BCM43142 driver on Kali Linux, you must first update the repository and upgrade the package by typing the following command in the terminal.

Wait until it’s finished, when it’s finished installing linux-headers, now install the synaptic package manager because we will install the driver using synaptic.

Then run the Synaptic Package Manager by typing the synaptic command in the terminal, click on the Search menu, then in the Search column please type BCM43142.

From the search results, 3 options will appear as shown below, select broadcom-sta-dkms -> right click then select Mark for installation -> click the Apply button and wait for the installation process to complete. Then reboot your laptop.

• It does not support running mdk3 to disconnect other users on the network.
• It does not support monitor mode so we cannot capture handshakes when penetrating a WiFi network.
• Cannot run aircrack-ng software, which is a software used for wireless network penetration.

No,You can’t.Unlike other Operating Systems like Windows,It might not be easy installing softwares and wireless drivers in Kali linux especially If you are a beginner.

Method 1: Fix Wireless Drivers Problem in Kali Linux(2021)

The main problem of Wi-Fi or wireless not getting detected in Kali Linux is due to the missing wireless drivers.We can solve the problem by updating the system.

The steps below can be followed to fix the Wireless Drivers problem in Kali Linux;

Step 1. Connect your Kali Linux System to Internet using Ethernet/Wired Network.

Step 2. Open the Terminal(Ctrl+Alt+T).A black Command line Interface appears just like below:

Step 3. Open sources.list file by using command “nano /etc/apt/sources.list“

Step 4. Now paste the links below into the source file. Press ‘Ctrl+O’ to write it into file and Hit Enter.

deb http://http.kali.org/kali kali-rolling main non-free contrib

deb-src http://http.kali.org/kali kali-rolling main non-free contrib

Step 5. Exit the source.list file using ‘Ctrl + X’

Step 6. Run the following commands:

sudo apt update && apt dist-upgrade

It will update and install all the required files,softwares and drivers,etc from the repositories.

Note: It might take some time to finish downloading the files. Till then Grab a cup of Coffee and Chill.

Step 7. After that, Run the command below in the terminal;

It installs all the drivers needed for your system.

sudo apt install firmware-linux

Step 7. Reboot

Method 2: Fix Wireless Drivers Problem in Kali Linux

Step 1. Download the drivers file from the link below:

Step 2. Open the downloaded folder Right Click on blank Area and Click Open in Terminal.

Step 3. Type the command ‘tar -jxvf filename’

Note: Replace filename with drivers file name For Example: compat-wireless-2010-06-26-p.tar.bz2

Step 4. Type the command ‘cd compat-*’

Step 5. Type the command ‘make unload’ then ‘make load’

Wireless Adapter will start working as soon as you finish all the steps mentioned above properly.
