No sound on youtube video

Post by sgoldin » Sun Mar 24, 2019 12:45 pm

Hi. I’m running Cinnamon on a 32-bit machine. I’ve adjusted the «Sound» preference to make sure I have decent levels set, and I attended an online webinar and heard it perfectly, but I can’t seem to get any audio on youtube videos. I’m using Firefox. Can anyone help me? Thank you.

If you heard the webinar with firefox. check to make sure the youtube audio isn’t muted! If you mute one video, it stays muted for other videos until you un-mute it.

Please edit your original post title to include [SOLVED] if/when it is solved!
Your data and OS are backed up. right?

I hadn’t previously muted Youtube, and the suggestion in the other forum didn’t seem to work, either.

I just read your post and the good replies to it. Here are my thoughts on this as well.

It would help to know more about your system setup. If you run » inxi -Fxzd » and » lsusb » from the console terminal prompt, highlight the results, copy and paste them back here, that should provide enough information.

Interesting link stating that for some people disabling hardware acceleration may fix it.
No sound on Youtube only with Firefox browser — problem started today. Other browsers are OK.
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1200717

Have you tried another browser to see if YouTube video with audio works in that?

Is your Firefox browser sandboxed with firejail? If so, there is a command to fix that.

Have you added any Firefox YouTube add-ons like downloaders, etc. You can start Firefox with add-on disabled in its help menu to see if any add-ons are the problem.

YouTube no sound

Post by trumpetman51 » Tue Apr 27, 2010 4:54 pm

Okay, here’s one for all you wonderful Linux gurus out there. I have just recently (within the past week) created a Linux Mint 8 USB Flash Drive to run Mint from because my PC’s Hard Drive went belly up. I used the most up to date Mint ISO file. For some reason, unknown to me of course, when I pull up a YouTube video I do not have any sound. I actually had this problem before when I was running Mint from the Hard Drive. I am thinking that I might be having a problem with Adobe Flash. but don’t know how to fix it.

Waiting ever hopeful and patiently,

i reconmend posting some details. Like what browser your using, what edition of mint (x64, x86, fluxbox, kde etc).
Are you using the flash that is already installed by LM ??
Do you get sound with everything else ok. like videos music etc

You are absolutely right!!
The browser I am using is Firefox 3.5.3. this is the browser that came with LM. I am using the 32 bit version of Linux Mint 8 (Helena). GNOME 2.28.1
I believe I am using the Flash that is already installed with Mint. I just installed Mint as is and didn’t try to make any changes to it. I do have sound while playing music CDs and earlier today I received a .wmv file by email which I played with «Movie Player» and the sound worked fine.

This is almost derogatory and you can flame me if you like, but just on the off-chance, the volume on the movie applet is turned up, right? Further, it is worth checking with the mixer applet that all of pcm, master, and the rest are turned up and certainly not muted. Also, is anything else trying to use the sound subsystem at the same time? Pulse audio should be able to serve multiple streams, but one never knows.

Outside of that, it’d be good to know what hardware we’re dealing with, there might be a known incompatibility between the Linux version of Flash and your particular sound card. To supply us with the sound card details, the output of the following command pasted here with code tags around it would be ideal:

Just copy those straight out of the boxes and paste them to a terminal session, and copy the output here (you can use your mouse to highlight the output and then switch to your browser and push your middle mouse button to achieve this. or however you like ).

Okay Rich, I don’t consider it derogatory. After all I came here for help. so. whatever man! First of all I am not sure what you are referring to when you talk about the mixer applet and pcm master and the rest. all I can tell you is that my sound is working when I play a CD and when I used Movie Player to play a wmv file. I am quite sure that nothing is muted and that the sound is turned up. When trying to listen to the YouTube video I checked the volume control in the YouTube window and tried turning up my master volume.

Anyway, here is the information that you suggested I post. I quoted your post and plugged the info in where you put the terminal commands.

card 0: SI7012 [SiS SI7012], device 0: Intel ICH [SiS SI7012]
Subdevices: 1/1

mint@mint ~ $

Just copy those straight out of the boxes and paste them to a terminal session, and copy the output here (you can use your mouse to highlight the output and then switch to your browser and push your middle mouse button to achieve this. or however you like ).

I hope I did that correctly! I am sure you will let me know if I didn’t!! And BTW. Thanks for being willing to help!

Since a day or two for me Youtube starts with sound muted. In the bottom left of the video (next to the pause/play button) I see and X on the speaker icon. If that is also the case for you, just slide the volume slider next to that all the way to the right to turn sound on. Not sure whether this is a Youtube change, or something in Firefox. Might just be for my system

***Thank you very much indeed. ***

I have had this youtube sound problem since yesterday (or so), it was driving me completely «nuts», you wouldn’t believe what I had been doing with my Mint 15 KDE system to «fix» this ;-(

This looks to have been confirmed to be a problem at Youtube side, with Google working on a fix. I’ve made a sticky in the newbie forum so other users might find it a little easier: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=90&t=146858
