Change Background Login Screen

You can choose to change the login background with an image [PNG or JPG] or your favorite color. the script will do this for you automatically.

GNOME DESKTOP:

• Kali Linux 2021.1 and 2021.2
• Kali Linux 2020.4
• Ubuntu 21.04
• Ubuntu 20.10
• Ubuntu 20.04

Instructions on how to use the Background Login Screen:

Change Background Login Screen [Kali Linux 2020]

Actually it is not that difficult to change the background of the login screen in Kali Linux. we just need to prepare an image that will be used as a background, and then run the script it will automatically create a login screen background on your kali linux.

Instructions on how to use the Background Login Screen:

Kali Login Screen

Kali Linux is intended for penetration testing, and not for every day use. I’d suggest you use a different distro for everyday use. In addition, your question as it is is not answerable. Please provide the Gnome version number currently installed.

I’m not 100% about older versions, but in later versions, you can simply goto the top-right of the workspace desktop (where you would access the quick info for Wi-Fi). Click the wrench/settings icon, and then enter settings (you can do this through any method you’re comfortable with). Finally, select the «background» icon in settings. Settings window is akin to Windows Control Panel, and going to Display, then Background.

So check if you can goto All Settings, look for a Background or similar option, and changer the lock screen and desktop separately.

I apologize if this does not work on 1.1, but I wanted to mention, Kali may be more difficult or work-intensive, for everyday use, unless your everyday use is fairly simple and you don’t mind occasional commands. It is a great distro to begin getting the hang on Linux, to perform tasks and understand the CLI better. But as mentioned, it is not an optimal Linux distro to attempt to use for every day use. Its not really configured for it and you will need to learn certain commands you will commonly deal with.

It still mounts drives and plays files w/o problem, so if you are using it to watch a movie or listen to music and browse the web, it’ll with fine. Not optimal, but there’s nothing actually «wrong» with doing it. Other versions can be easier to acclimate to though.

Also, GNOME is basically your desktop system. As you found out, changing this option on the lock screen only changes your environment. It does not pertain to the lock screen itself though, in terms of directly controlling it by switching that drop down option and selecting GNOME or anything else. You would need to manually set the bg pic through commands or by searching for settings.

How to change Lock Screen Background on Kali Linux XFCE

Linux is powerful and open-source and build for customization. It means we can change everything on Linux as per our need. In this article we are going to change our Kali Linux (XFCE4) lock screen background and give it a personal touch. This will be very interesting so stay with us to the end.

First we need to know what is our display resolution. Various PC have various resolutions. We can easily find ours by navigating in the App Menu > Settings > Display.

After opening the display settings we can easily see resolution of our display. As we can see in the following screenshot:

We can see that our display resolution is 1366×768 pixels. So our background screen also need to be in the same resolution.

Here we need to create an image with 1366×768 size. Or We can find it on Google, or other websites.

We can choose one from them as our lock screen background. We always check the property of image by right clicking on it and check it’s resolution.

For making it more attractive and personalized we added a text on the image by using GIMP image editor (Photoshop alternative for Linux, sudo apt install gimp ), Shown in the following screenshot:

All set now we need to set this 1366×768 image as our Kali Linux background. Here we need to know the location of this image, means the full path of the image. We can see it on image properties again.

We can see the location of the image is /home/kali/Desktop (We stored it on Desktop for example we can choose any location to save it). So the images full path will be /home/kali/Desktop/custom-bg.jpg . Now we need to open our terminal window and type following command to save our previous background image in a different name:

sudo mv /usr/share/desktop-base/kali-theme/login/background /usr/share/desktop-base/kali-theme/login/backgroundcopy

This command will rename our current lock screen background. Then we can set our customized image as a lock screen image by applying following command:

sudo ln -s /usr/share/desktop-base/kali-theme/login/background

In our case our is /home/kali/Desktop/custom-bg.jpg, so we use this on our terminal, as we can see in the following screenshot:

That’s it 🌝 . We had successfully changed our lockscreen image or locj screen background on our Kali Linux system, we can do the same for any XFCE based Linux distro. To see the effect we just need a reboot or log out. In the lock screen we can see our edited and customized login screen image in the background.

Here we got our customized login screen. We can do anything if we have a little image editing knowledge, we just need to keep in mind that our background screen must need to be in our Display Size (1366×768 in our case).

Here if we want then we can change the user image (Kali Linux logo on above screenshot). To do this we need to go to Kali Linux settings.

Then we need to navigate into LightDM GTK+ Greeter Settings options (marked in above screenshot). Then in the next window we can change our user image, shown in the following screenshot:

For better results we should use a square PNG image

This is how we can change the login screen background on our Kali Linux or any other XFCE based Linux Distro.

Can’t login in Kali Linux

I installed Kali Linux a month ago. It was good until today. When I submit username and password the box disappears and reappears again asking about username and password. It shows no error. I just can’t login. I also tried to make new account and try login but same problem occur. I don’t wanna reinstall it.

Since it doesn’t show an error, it’s probably not a problem with the account. I suspect that there is an error with whatever desktop environment/window manager is started. Can you use ++ to switch to a console and login there? It might be useful to look for errors in ~/.xsession-errors and /var/log/Xorg.0.log

If you have reason to believe your installation of Kali Linux was compromised, as is the case here, you really have to reinstall it from a known-good source.

Recently I have this login problem while run Kali on Virtual Box. It turn out that I was out of space on virtual disc drive. When I remove some files, that I have there I was able to log in like always.You can enter tty from Virtual Box using your hot key — default is your Right Ctrl and F1. If you want to exit from tty to GUI use Right Ctrl and F7.

I saw this post on a quest for a solution to the same problem. I couldn’t find an answer. What i then tried doing was this and it worked.

1. While in the username screen press Ctrl + Alt + F1
2. Login with root.
3. Type sudo apt-get update
4. Type sudo apt-get upgrade
5. Type sudo reboot

After that the system rebooted and the login worked! I hope this works for who ever finds this post.

This seems to happen when a lot of updates are run. It happened to me when using the 2016.2 OVA and running a full update and upgrade. Here are the steps that worked:

This will finish the updates that were interrupted.

If all those precious answers fail, drop in a tty using Ctrl + Alt + F3 or any other Function key and login. Now, create a directory first with mkdir -p ~/dotfiles_backup . Then, execute the following command:

find ~ -name '.*' -maxdepth 1 -type f -exec mv <> ~/_dotfiles_backup/ \; 

If after this you’re still unable to login, run it again but remove the -type f option. If you get Operation not permitted or Permission denied, use sudo.

This will reset most of your saved preferences. After you’re able to login again, you can try to restore them one by one and see what was causing the problem.
