Reset Mac OS X Bluetooth service?

Any way to do this either via a utility, command-line, or otherwise? I regularly have my headphones and moused paired which causes the Bluetooth service to crash nearly daily. Sometimes I can just repair the devices but other times the service breaks completely. When that happens I have to reboot; very annoying indeed. Is there a «Factory Reset» option for Apple Bluetooth keyboard, mouse, trackpad?

Either High Sierra or Mojave was the last OS to have the native options below. They are no longer viable on Catalina and up AFAIK. I (or someone) will edit in fixes for the latest macOS once we have tested / identified them. Seek support from Apple in the mean time.

I 2011 I there was not an easy fix (you had to download, install, and use developer tools), but soon thereafter on OS X, advanced features were provided from the Bluetooth icon in the menu bar. Hold shift and option (only) when clicking on the icon:

I’ve never seen resetting the module work better than powering it off, but I’m sure theres cases where this speeds troubleshooting and might save a trip to the repair shop if software corruption / settings drift is the cause of issues.

Logging is useful, but the logs are very very large, so keep that in mind and set a reminder to turn it off tomorrow.

On older OS, you needed a developer tool to systematically remove pairing records and HID devices. Bluetooth Explorer ships with Xcode 3. (as of today, early June 2011 — this is something available at no cost if you agree to the terms of the free developer program. It might also be bundled with Xcode 4 — available with paid download or paid mac developer program — but I can’t vouch for that) You can also browse the developer documentation for free to learn more about bluetooth implementation.

The explorer has a detailed window with many settings to automate resetting devices for testing. Here is a portion of the window showing that not only are the local mac settings cleared, it will reach out to Apple Bluetooth devices and reset their internal state as well.

Since bluetooth has to start very soon in the boot process (and is part of the setup assistant since new macs that have no accounts have to know how to set up Bluetooth keyboards and mouse out of the box) it’s not just a simple user preference file but instead a system level preference and stored in several locations.

is there a way to restart the bluetooth service on Catalina, without a reboot? Sometimes I need to reboot, to get the Mac to connect to my AirPods.

Bluetooth not available after upgrade to Catalina I upgraded to Catalina on my Macbook Pro. Now I can’t turn on Bluetooth. My Mac is pretty old (10 years) so it’s way past its prime as far as application support, etc. I have a newer Mac so I mostly only use this one for video and music anymore. if I can’t connect airbuds, it’s essentially useless. my bluetooth on macbook has disapperared from system preferences I am running OS Catalina version 10.15.5 on a MB pro (Mid 2012). I have been using a recently bought pair of AirPods without any trouble until yesterday (possibly coinciding with the update to the latest version of OS). Now my Bluetooth is not working, its has also gone from the Systems Preference. I have tried holding shift option and clicking on the Bluetooth symbol, I get ‘Open PacketLogger’ but nothing happens when I click on it.

In macOS 12 Monterey, performing the above is not a part of the GUI (Graphical User Interphase)*. However, there is an alternative route: To reset the Bluetooth Module on MacOS Monterey (and maybe other versions to come), you can reset the Bluetooth Module through use of Terminal.**

How to reset Bluetooth on Mac

There are two different options you can try if you are run into issues establishing a Bluetooth connection on your Mac:

You can use Terminal to kill the Bluetooth service. This is easy.

1. Open Terminal on your Mac. Go to the /Applications/Utilities folder and double-click the Terminal icon.

2. Enter the following command and hit enter and then enter your computer password:

The second method is to delete your Bluetooth preference files. Here is how:

1. In the Finder, click Go and Go to Folder.

2. Enter the following file’s pathway:

/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Bluetooth.plist

4. Restart your Mac. Your Mac will re-create this file automatically.

Sadly, none of these instructions worked for me. I’ve deleted the indicated file, emptied the trash and restarted three times. Bluetooth speakers still not working now that I’ve upgraded to Monterey (MacBook Pro 2016).

Neither of these is working for me.
• There is no plist file:
com.apple.AssetCache.plist
com.apple.BezelServices.plist
com.apple.biometrickitd.plist
com.apple.ByteRangeLocking.plist
com.apple.commerce.plist • When I enter the command in terminal and my password, return gets me back to
Mac:~ WD$ sudo pkill bluetoothd

Mac:~ WD$ Other people are complaining of the exact same thing. Using OS 12.4 on a MBP

So I put com.apple.Bluetooth.plist in trash and emptied it and it’s completely gone to the point where my laptop won’t connect to anything. How do I fix this.

I ran the sudo command and it didn’t seem to improve anything, so I went to step 2. I found there was no com.apple.Bluetooth.plist file in the specified location. I assume the pkill command removed it, but a couple of restarts and one complete shutdown and restart did not restore it. Note that this is an M1Max, and my 2019 Intel MacBook, running Monterey does have this file. Is this different for the M1Max, or is this yet another bug in the Bluetooth farce? When I look at my Bluetooth Preferences it says “Now discoverable as: [my computer name]”, but if I click on the Bluetooth icon in the menu bar while holding down shift-option, it shows “Discoverable: off”. Yikes! However, after rebooting my Magic Trackpad and my MX Master 3 mouse are still working fine, but I can’t get it to find new Bluetooth devices.

I have exactly the same issue as John Howard, except that my problematic hardware is a 2018 Mac Mini (Intel). This is driving me crazy! I have tried all the recommended “fixes” from multiple sites and none of them are working. All I want to do is use Universal Control between my 2 Macs, but issue this is causing it to not work.
