Mail Notification App
Post by Elsac » Tue Oct 15, 2013 1:31 am
Hello, I was looking for a mail notification app that will work with Mint LMDE Mate Edition. I use thunderbird, but it randomly stops checking mail after some time. Even IMAP IDLE stops working. I tried installing mail-notify from the repo. But not only does it install a bunch of packages (even evolution), it also tries to remove the «mate-desktop-gnome» package. So I didn’t install it. So, if anyone is aware of or using an app which works with MATE desktop, please let me know.

Are you using gmail? If so, checkgmail has been working well for me. I use it for notifications and thunderbird for actually reading the emails.

I use gmail, but I also use another IMAP mail service for official purposes. That one is what I am more worried about. It’s a fastmail.fm ID.

Install mail-notification. It notifies you in the notification area of the panel when a mail arrives. It works very well. You might also install mail-notification-evolution that gives support for Evolution.

Linux Mint
Ubuntu, Linux Mint?

e-mail notifications
Post by chicjohn » Wed Sep 23, 2015 5:04 pm
I cannot get any sound or visual notifications with thunderbird e-mail. I have trawled the website and found that this is a common problem which no one seems to be able to resolve. Can anyone suggest an alternative e-mail program which works with linux mint. I rely heavily on my e-mail accounts for banking/bill paying etc. and really need to have functioning alert system.
Thanx in anticipation
chicjohn.

The problem with the sound notifications should be easily solvable: Choose a user-defined sound-file instead of the default sound.
The solution for the optical notifications is again not so hard to solve: Remove the pre-installed TB and replace it with the Mozilla build; notifications show here perfectly. I wrote a tutorial about the how to.

If all else fails, install New Mail Attention extension https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/seamon . attention/

Yet another option is to install «mail-notification» which places an icon on the panel when new mail arrives as well as playing your chosen alert sound.
sudo apt-get install mail-notification
