In this tutorial we learn how to install mdf2iso on Ubuntu 21.04.

What is mdf2iso

mdf2iso is a very simple utility to convert an Alcohol 120% mdf image to an iso, toc / dat or cue / bin image.

There are three methods to install mdf2iso on Ubuntu 21.04. We can use apt-get , apt and aptitude . In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install mdf2iso Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

mdf2iso: MDF to ISO Converter for Ubuntu Linux

If you use the CD/DVD burning tool called “Alcohol 120%” or “Daemon Tools” heavily in MS Windows and has a reasonable amount of disc images created in the “MDF/MDS” format but just figured out that you cannot burn them in GNU/Linux (say that you recently switched over to Ubuntu Linux! :D) as with “ISO” disc images, then this small, yet extremely useful tool called “mdf2iso” might save your day ;-).

Not just that, but by converting those images, you can actually save some disk space too (after converting to “ISO” format for instance). Because when you create a “.mdf” disc image, that image will usually be bigger than the actual size of the disc (perhaps it contains some error recover data which can be useful at times. But, if you have limited disk spaces left etc and don’t really need that type of features, it can come in handy though).

Other than from “.mdf” to ISO format, it also converts into other formats such as CUE, TOC, BIN and DAT as well. I think that “.mdf” format is developed by “Alcohol 120%” developers. So just to make sure that this tool works with the latest versions of “.mdf” files, I just downloaded the latest version of “Alcohol 120%”, created a disc image of “Ubuntu 11.10″ (in Windows 7) and tried to convert it into the “.iso” format, and it worked flawlessly.

Few main features …

*. It’s a console (command-line) based tool but is extremely simple and user friendly as well. And as you can see from the above screenshot, it also outputs details such as a progress-bar as well.

*. If you don’t manually enter the output format, it converts the MDF file into the ISO format and uses the source file’s name as the output file’s name.

You can install “mdf2iso” in Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin, 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot, 11.04 Natty Narwhal, 10.10 and 10.04 by using the below command in your Terminal window.

How to use it?

Very simple. Just open your Terminal window and enter the below command. Make sure to replace “Ubuntu-11.10-i386.mdf” with your source file’s name and path (if it’s in a location other than your “Home”).

Though when you create a “MDF” file, “Alcohol 120%” also creates another file with the same name but with the extension “.mds” (small file, few Kilobytes in size) which holds some additional data about the original “MDF” file (“metadata” actually).

So you’d need both of those files for the conversion to go smoothly (no data corruption etc) thus make sure both MDF/MDS pair (for each disc image) is located on the same location.

But then again, I tested with and without the “.mds” files, and on both occasions, “mdf2iso” was able to convert without any issues nonetheless.

I just finished creating a shell script for retroarch which allows running any retroarch core from the script so you can simply enjoy playing your old schools games from a simple shell script for your gaming pleasure.

mdf2iso, конвертировать образы MDF в ISO в Linux

Вчера я наткнулся на образ компакт-диска, который мне пришлось записать, он был типа .MDF, чтобы я мог читать, что эти файлы созданы с помощью программного обеспечения. Алкоголь 120% а в Ubuntu Мангал Регистратор, установленный по умолчанию, не поддерживает этот тип изображений, я не знаю (потому что я не являюсь пользователем KDE) и K3b поддерживает их.

К счастью, несколько друзей Linux из Twitter они дали мне простое и быстрое решение, конвертировать образ MDF в ISO с помощью mdf2iso, что, как ясно видно из названия, он просто отвечает за эту работу. mdf2iso находится в репозиториях Ubuntu, поэтому нам просто нужно поискать его в Центр программного обеспечения или введите на консоли

sudo apt-get установить mdf2iso

Затем мы открываем терминал и переходим туда, где у нас есть изображение mdf, и вводим

Через несколько минут мы преобразуем образ в ISO, и мы сможем записать его в Brasero.

How To Convert .bin, .mdf To ISO In Linux

Convert your incompatible image files to ISO from Linux to mount them in VirtualBox.

When we are working with VirtualBox in Linux, one of the only ways to mount a CD or DVD is to have it as a .iso file, which is also one of the only formats supported by VirtualBox. In this tutorial, it will be shown how to convert various formats to iso using command line tools in Linux.

Sometimes using the Terminal can be quite inconvenient, but with these conversion tools it is actually very simple, and maybe even easier than using some GUIs for the task. Nevertheless, I still think authors of these tools should work towards creating a GUI. It is often because of the lack of a GUI that people turn away from Linux.

MDF to ISO

MDF files can be converted with a tool called mdf2iso. You may need to install this before using it, so type the following in a terminal:

sudo apt-get install mdf2iso 

After finishing the installation you can navigate to the directory where the .mdf files is located. In this case we will assume it is located in /home/MyUser/Downloads.

Then convert the file by typing this:

The new .iso will automatically be created.

BIN and CUE to ISO

To convert a .bin and .cue file to a .iso file type the following:

bchunk MyImage.bin MyImage.cue WhateverFilename.iso 

IMG to ISO

ccd2iso MyImage.img WhateverFilename.iso 

As usual, you may need to install the application before using it, so simply type:

sudo apt-get install ccd2iso

Озадачил меня недавно мой большой дружище erichfromm вопросом: как в Linux Ubuntu распознавать и подмонтировать образы дисков формата mdf/mds. Это, если кто не в курсе, формат образов, создаваемых win-программой Alcohol 120%. Полазив по форумам и задав на них этот вопрос, он услышал в ответ от одного из местных форумчан: «мне это не надо, никому это не надо и вам тоже не надо«. Типичный ответ человека, который поставил Линукс для дешёвого понта и строит из себя форумного знатока, загружая при этом сам Линукс раз в неделю, тупо полюбоваться. Но нам, на удивление форумных горе-знатоков, знать ответ на этот вопрос всё-таки надо.

Разобравшись с проигрыванием DVD-дисков с фильмами (смотрите предыдущий пост) и вспомнив, что у меня валяется на винте несколько образов дисков в пресловутом mdf-формате, я взялся за решение проблемы.

На чистой установленной Ubuntu для работы с дисками и образами имеется только одна установленная программа — Brasero. Она предназначена для нарезки дисков, а также для создания образов. Формат образов — iso. Монтировать не умеет, нужные нам дополнительные форматы не понимает.

Заходим в Центр приложений Ubuntu, вкладка «Система«, вводим в строке поиска «mdf«. Выпадает список из пяти пакетов:

1. MountManager (mountmanager)
2. A simple utility to convert mdf to iso / cue / toc images
3. Converts many CD-ROM image formats to iso9660
4. converts UIF files (used by MagicISO) to ISO or other formats
5. FUSE module to mount ISO filesystem images

Первый пункт списка — программа MountManager, предназначена для подключения внешних носителей (монтирования). Работает как с разделами (т.е., к примеру, те же дисководы и разделы с установленной Windows), так и со всеми популярными образами дисков. Устанавливаем.

Установленная программа располагается по адресу Система -> Администрирование -> MountManager. Запускаем, вводим пароль администратора, читаем приветствие первого запуска. Заходим в Расширения -> Монтирование образов. Работает — для образов формата iso. Mdf видит, но подмонтировать не может.

Подобным образом я перебрал все программы. Визуальная из них только первая, остальные — консольные. Программы со второй по четвёртую предназначены для конвертирования образов из формата в формат. С mdf с ходу не заработали, остальные форматы конвертировать пробовать не стал, хотя проблем, скорее всего, с этим нет. В итоге с mdf заработала только последняя.

Устанавливаем FUSE. В консоли она запускается командой fuseiso. Параметров запуска немного. Подмонтировать в каталог /mount/название_образа не получилось, зато образ с ходу подмонтировался в домашний каталог, в специально подготовленный для этого раздел. Такой вот у команды синтаксис:

fuseiso -n -p Sword_1.mdf ~/Images/Sword_1/

Sword_1.mdf — имя файла-образа в формате mdf, лежащего в каталоге, в котором мы находимся в данный момент. У меня этот образ располагался на подмонтированном разделе Windows, с монтированием образа с уже подмонтированного раздела проблем не возникло.

~/Images/Sword_1/ — в домашнем каталоге (обозначается «~«) предварительно был создан подкаталог Images, а в нём — подкаталог Sword_1 для монтирования конкретного образа.

Для монтирования образов обычного формата iso подходит визуальная MountManager, имеющая тьму настроек и параметров.

Для монтирования образов формата mdf используем программу FUSE.

Собственно, работоспособность остальных программ (как и работоспособность образов mdf в MountManager) под сомнение мной не ставится — просто они не работают с наскока и требуют мной не разведанных танцев с бубном. Сразу после установки с форматом mdf работает только программа FUSE, которую всем всячески и советую. Как я понимаю, то же можно сказать и об остальных дистрибутивах Линукс, только установка FUSE, соответственно, не через Центр приложений Ubuntu, а теми способами, что в иных дистрибутивах доступны.
