Microsoft arc touch bluetooth mouse разборка

Recently I acquired a Microsoft Wireless Arc Touch mouse for free from work. Unfortunately, it was broken and my friend had no idea why. I thought, why not take it home and see if I can get a free $60 mouse out of the deal?

Well, I searched around online for some time and found out that the secret and nifty power switch in the Arc often broke (you turn on the mouse by bending the body from flat to curved so you can use it, very cool). I guess that design is not yet well thought out, but the mouse is a very cool idea.

Anyways, one guy from this thread said he fixed it by cutting the line to the power switch and tying the wires together. The Arc would be constantly on, but its battery life is beautiful and you can just take out the batteries when not in use!

Note: There is another fix mentioned by Joshua in the comments. It did not work for my mouse, but it worth checking. If you don’t know how to take the mouse apart, follow my instructions for that at least. The rubber sheath will be held by 2-4 screws. Find them and pull back the rubber sheath to expose the underside.

Tools Required: jeweler screwdriver set, wire strippers, side cutters, needle nose pliers, drill, 1/16″ drill bit

1) Our first order of business is to remove the battery cover and the sticker inside it.

2) At the bottom of the battery compartment are two very small hex screws. I did not have a driver or hex wrench small enough, so I used a drill and 1/16 drill bit. The bit’s teeth caught one of the stars and drove the screws out with minimal stripping. Save them carefully and mark where they go.

3) Now we have to remove the button lid. There is a very small seam in between that and the main body. Start at where the button lid meets the rubber body and slowly work your way forward with a flat jeweler screwdriver (the smallest you have). The button cover will pop off as you go.

4)Now we must take out the ribbon and power cable connecting the lid to the PCB. Remove them with care.

5) notice the very small red and black wires going into the rubber body (highlighted with the green circle), those go to the switch. Cut these far away from where they connect to the PCB. Now, very carefully strip them with wire strippers. Use the smallest setting, and be very gentle.

6) Once they are stripped, twist them together and wrap a bit of electrical tape around them. (shown in the red circle with the arrow pointing to it)

7) Now you need to tuck them in and plug back in the button cover.

8) Before you snap the lid on, put in some AAA batteries and see if it lights up. The pointer laser and green power button on the button lid should light up. Remove the batteries, snap on the lid, insert the hex screws with the drill again, and enjoy!

There you have it! This may not fix your broken Arc Touch mouse but it is a very common fix for a very common problem.

Конкретную модель мыши можно найти на теге в батарейном отсеке.

Bluetooth Mobile Mouse 3600

Microsoft Arc Mouse Tear-Down

In my course of work I had the opportunity to test and disassemble Microsoft’s Arc mouse. The Microsoft Arc Mouse was first released in 2010 as part of the Microsoft Surface brand line. It has undergone a few revisions in the subsequent years but the basic functionality
remains the same.

It was designed by Carbon Design Group in Seattle prior to their acquisition by Oculus. The Arc Mouse comes in black, gray, and white. There is also some variety between models in the texture of the ‘skin’ and the surface finish of the button pad.

Top, Bottom, and Bent

The Arc Mouse has three features that are particularly distinguishing. These features span the categories of design, hapitcs, and components.

Alongside an elegant visual design this mouse also features a rather unique interactive element. The mouse automatically powers on when bent into an arc, and powers off again when it is folded flat for travel.

The matte-textured layer of rubber that serves as the skin for this mechanism covers any pinch points or visible hinges. This gives the mouse a much more organic and approachable feel.

In the tangent category of haptics the scroll pad of the Arc Mouse also provides an excellent interactive experience. Where one would normally expect to find a scroller wheel there is a touch sensitive track pad. The track pad controls the scrolling function in the same fashion as a physical wheel. However, it also provides haptic feedback in a manner that mimics the progress of a traditional, indexed wheel. It even allows the user to let the ‘wheel’ free-spin with a quick push across the surface which results in a pleasant decrescendo of haptic ‘clicks.’

Track pad surface and assembly

The secret to this feature lies in a key component. The vibratory feedback for the track pad is generated by a Samsung piezo haptic actuator. Unlike ERM and LRA vibration motors a piezo actuator delivers feedback in realtime (sub millisecond). This creates a very seamless interaction with the trackpad that keeps up with rapid changes in speed and position of the user’s finger.

All of these features combined with a 100 meter Bluetooth range makes this mouse ideal for a frequent traveler or nomadic professional. And with prices starting at about $30 and rising to around $70 for the newest model it’s available to most potential users.

A word to the wise though. If you want to take yours apart like I did be prepared for a bit of a struggle plugging the ribbon cable back into the PC board. And if you ever want to use it again I recommend leaving the spring-metal arc covered. I’ve included a technical rendering below for anyone who’s curious.

Microsoft Arc Touch Mouse Teardown-shun cheng hsieh

At the first glance, I thought this is a PowerPoint wireless controller.

However, I notice the part made out of silicon seems floppy and has some wrinkles on it. I tried to bend it through its wrinkles, and after a “click” sound it become a shape that can support our hand. At that time, I realize this is a mouse. After removing the battery cap and the name of this product “Microsoft Arc Touch Mouse” indicates itself as a mouse.

It’s hard to find screws these days. After searching, I realize the first two screws were hidden under the sticker. Remove these two screws and you will notice there are more screws above the silicone part. After removing those, you can easily take off the silicone part.

At the silicone part you can notice parting line on the side which indicates this part is an silicone injection part. soft material injection are widely used in shoes outsole and remote control button. Soft material injection usually have more visable part line and surplus materials may need hand trimming. Therefore, it’s easier to tell their part line. The glossy parts of this mouse are also made throuht injection modling. The material may be ABS or PLA.

The arc part is pretty complex the parts are fastend by aluminum rivets. I tried to reomove all these rivets but I only cut a little piece of rivet. That’s why I assuming the materials of riverts are made of aluminum. I aslo found some nice clean explosion view of this product.

In this project I use mostly small screwdriver and sometimes diagnoal cutting plies. It was pretty surprised that screwdriver can disassameble most part of this mouse.

The interesting part of this product must be magnatic part that can hold use connector. It may not have enough sapce for designer to put controllor in battery cabinet as most wireless mouse do because this mouse is very thin.

The second design part I really appreciate is the arc part. It’s comeplex and delicate and this series have arc type of structure in every generation. The 1st generation was simply a fold structure. This concept may want to save some storage space for user. I’m pretty impressed by the hard work of both designer and engineer. Can’t wait to see next generation of Arc Touch!
