README.md
MusE is a MIDI/Audio sequencer with recording and editing capabilities written originally by Werner Schweer now developed and maintained by the MusE development team. MusE aims to be a complete multitrack virtual studio for Linux. It is published under the GNU General Public License.
Most Linux distributions include MusE ready to install, check your package manager.
Installation from source code:
Stable source code releases are here. Or one of the git branches can be cloned, built, and installed.
Installation instructions are in the README file.
These and other important documents, READMEs, and addendums are in the src directory.
The official MusE Manual (work in progress) has migrated to the wiki and can be found here.

MusE is foremost available for Linux, we hope it’s just a matter of time before it is ported to your (other) favourite platform.
MusE should be available for most distributions in the default repository, the actual procedure to install MusE from the respective source is outside the scope of this page. (There is some likely outdated info below in the Binaries chapter about installation for various distributions.)
If your distribution only has an old version you can install it from source follow the instructions below.
AppImages for the stable releases are also available, starting with 4.0.0-pre1 (see below).
For information about how to compile MusE from source see the README file in the package!
Our development happens here on github, checkout the git repository on the base page. Instructions are here: https://github.com/muse-sequencer/muse
If you don’t want to compile your software on your own, a prebuild binary would be the best way to install MusE. They should be available for most Linux distributions.
Check your distributions repository, no specific info at this moment. From the command line this is usually done with a command like one of these:
sudo apt-get install muse sudo apt-get install museseq sudo aptitude install muse
There is probably a graphical packet manager than makes it more user friendly.
Check your distributions repository, no specific info at this moment. From the command line this is usually done with a command like one of these:
yum install muse (in fedora based distros)
There is probably a graphical packet manager than makes it more user friendly.
MusE Sequencer
MusE is a Music Editor written for Linux and aims to be a fully featured digital audio workstation (DAW). MusE’s features include:
Features
- Playing back, recording, editing MIDI
- MIDI file import/export
- Piano Roll, Drum Roll, Score Editor and Eventlist editors
- Playing back, recording, and limited editing of audio/wave data
- auto-adjusting your wave files to fit your song’s tempo (time-stretching without altering pitch, using RubberBand)
- Uses JACK and JACK’s transport mechanism, for integration with other audio applications
- Supports various effects and software syntesizers (LADSPA, DSSI, VST, VSTi)
If you like screenshots, there are some at the bottom of the page
My contributions
- The Score Editor as of MusE 2.0 and later
- Audio time-stretching to fit into the song’s tempo (still work in progress)
- Overall better MIDI vs Wave integration
- Speed fixes
- New, cleaner design of some internal structures
I also migrated the whole project over to GitHub. Read the linked article for why and how.
Things to do
MusE is far from being complete. While it is already a great tool, the development team is still rather small, and we’re struggling getting all the bugs fixed, and new features implemented.
- Documentation. A handbook. Tutorials.
- A easy to use in-program help system
- Code cleanup
- Redesign GUI
- Automation controller rework
- Social services, like sharing places for the users’ music
- Providing example music, loops, instruments, etc
Getting involved
If you like to help us with any of the above (or anything else, actually), please get in touch with us! We greatly appreciate any help! Just write a mail to lmuse-@lists.sf.net, or to me. (Your mail may be replied to within some hours, or within several weeks.)
More information

MusE — Linux Music Editor

Thank you for your hard work on this project, MusE has finally allowed me to break free from my dual boot with Windows & Cubase. I’ve tried a few open source options for DAWs on Linux but MusE works the best for me by far. I have only used it exclusively for MIDI sequencing with outboard gear but have not had any issues here at all, the MIDI setup and config is nice and easy to use.
This is one of the most powerful music production tools for Linux. It has a lot of features. The development team is kind and supportive. There’s nothing else to ask. Congratulations and thank you for making it for FREE, this is a clear example of the fact of FREE software doesn’t mean lack of features, stability or support, poor design, etc. Please keep developing it.
thank you very much for this great project . muse team essential for the future of linux-audio. thanksssss.
