can’t boot from USB: «No DEFAULT or UI config. »
Post by liquidambar » Thu Oct 09, 2014 9:23 pm
This is my first post on these forums; please be gentle. I recognise that this is probably an already-documented, already-solved problem, but the forum software complained that all of my search terms were «too common» and none of the most recent 150 topics in this forum were relevant enough to my situation. I’ve Googled for hours before coming here; I promise you, I’ve tried to help myself first.
- I have downloaded linuxmint-17-mate-64bit-v2.iso and verified that its MD5 sum matches what’s shown on the Download page.
- I have verified through this Linux Community tutorial that the ISO file should equally function on a USB stick.
- I have pre-formatted two different USB sticks with a single FAT32 partition.
- I have used both Ubuntu’s Startup Disk Creator and UNetbootin to prepare the USB sticks.
- I have followed the advice here and copied any files whose name begins with «isolinux» to a name beginning with «syslinux» where any such files were missing.
- I have tested the USB sticks in multiple USB ports (one stick at any time).
Verifying DMI Pool Data . ERROR: No configuration file found No DEFAULT or UI configuration directive found! boot: _
This is despite using different USB sticks, despite using different USB ports, and despite using different methods of preparing the USB sticks.
I also tried using «dd» to prepare the USB sticks, a method shown on the Linux Mint Community page linked above. That also failed, presumably because the instructions lack setting up a bootloader.
Any assistance in getting my PC to boot into Linux Mint 17 MATE 64-bit from a USB stick would be very gratefully received.

Forum search function is virtually useless. Bookmark this search engine for Linux related questions. Or you can use a regular search engine and just start your search with site:forums.linuxmint.com followed by your search terms. Eg. site:forums.linuxmint.com Verifying DMI Pool Data
I don’t know answer to your problem and ran above search. Unfortunately didn’t find any definitive answers but got the feeling it could be related to having a mix of both SATA and IDE hard drives. If you have that situation, try unplugging the one you don’t intend to install on and see if USB boots properly. If that doesn’t work, try with only the other one plugged in just to see if that makes any difference.
If it works when drive you want to install to is plugged-in, go ahead and install it. Reboot into installed system once, then shutdown and re-attach other drive. Boot again and see if it still boots properly. Hopefully you get lucky and this works.
- * Exact model of computer you have
* Approximate age of computer
* CPU, type of graphics card, amount of RAM
* Other operating systems that you have installed to it (if any)
* Number of hard drives

My statement that this failed was actually incorrect.
After using «dd» to prepare the USB sticks, GParted thought the USB sticks were corrupt; this led me to believe that I should not attempt to boot from them. However, when I tried to out of desperation, booting from them worked flawlessly.
I’m not sure that the USB sticks are meant to look like they have no partitions after preparing them this way, but I suppose if someone here can update that Linux Mint Community page to mention this possibility (and more importantly, to ignore it and try booting from it anyway), that note might improve the success rate of that page for future readers.
At any rate, my issue is resolved. Thanks to gold_finger for responding. I’ll keep the improved search engine pointers in mind for next time.

No configuration file found
I made a bootable USB flash drive for ubuntu 11.04 32bit.
I went to the setup and setup the booting option to USB drive. Now I am trying to boot from USB drive it give an error message:
SYSLINUX 4.04 EDD 2011-04-18 Copyright (C) 1994-2011 H. Peter Anvin et al
ERROR: No configuration file found
No DEFAULT or UI counfiguration directive found!
boot: _
Can someone please help me?

Re: No configuration file found
How did you create the Live USB? Either use the inbuilt USB Startup Disk Creator program from the live environment, or use unetbootin.
Also, make sure the downloaded iso file is intact (create md5checksum with this tool: http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/. D5-Check.shtml
and compare it with the original one given here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuHashes)

Re: No configuration file found
I found formatting into just FAT not 32 and using unetbootin and allowing it to download it’s own version allowed me LIVE boot. Every .iso I downloaded on my own didn’t seem to let me boot in.

Re: No configuration file found
Similar to PaeTar, I found for my older laptop it wouldn’t work if the USB was formatted with a FAT32 partition, but once I formatted as FAT16 things are going a lot better. Perhaps that should be an option in the startup disk creator?
(Btw, technical info and other possible remedies at the syslinux page https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php. all_-_syslinux)

Re: No configuration file found
The root cause to this system error is FAT32.
I think your Bios cannot understand FAT32 file system. May be your system is old one. Format the USB with FAT16, or simply FAT file system and then create the usb bootable stick that will definitely work.
