Ubuntu or any other linux distro will not install
My uncommon laptop model: 15-au070nb is an hp pavilion notebook. My drive is formatted in the GPT partition format. I try to dualboot my pc. My problem is that after trying the installer 20+ times (I’m not even kidding) that linux would not install. I’ve tried every combination of bios settings (I cannot disable secure boot because my bios doesn’t have it) I have tried to install in uefi mode and legacy mode, both didn’t work. I tried making the usb several times over with different software like balena etcher or rufus. With rufus I tried the GPT partition scheme with no succes. I tried the MBR with no succes either. I also tried the ‘nomodeset’ and the other that I don’t remember the name of. The problem with the installer is that it gets stuck at random moments of the installation the most common part where it gets stuck is with copying files. It feels like my computer is blocking the installation somehow but windows installs without any problems Thank you for helping.
You’ve provided no specific details; what on-topic OS & release did you use? did you verify the ISO? did you verify your write to media? etc. You’ve not ruled out user-type procedural errors in what you provided.
Either your hardware has some unique issue or you’re doing something wrong. My guess is that you’re doing something wrong. Have you seen that Ubuntu has an official tutorial? Please follow all these steps exactly. Also, continue to comb thru your BIOS settings. Every motherboard is different so what you’re looking for might be called something slightly different. If you are confused about BIOS setting description, read the documentation for your computer!
Smells like a possibly flaky/dying USB drive to me. Or the onboard HDD/SSD (which falls under ‘hardware’ as @Nmath wrote. Without any troubleshooting information, you are asking us to guess and speculate. You don’t really need us for that.
Since you are trying to dual-boot, are you using the «install alongside Windows» option? And do you have unpartitioned free space before you start the installation? Or are you trying to manually partition with the «something else» option?

In your ‘UEFI/BIOS’ you have to disable secure boot . Otherwise it won’t install any Linux distribution or any other than Microsoft Operating System.
‘Most x86 hardware comes from the factory pre-loaded with Microsoft keys. This means the firmware on these systems will trust binaries that are signed by Microsoft. Most modern systems will ship with SB enabled — they will not run any unsigned code by default, but it is possible to change the firmware configuration to either disable SB or to enrol extra signing keys.’
‘SB is also not meant to lock users out of controlling their own systems. Users can enrol extra keys into the system, allowing them to sign programs for their own systems. Many SB-enabled systems also allow users to remove the platform-provided keys altogether, forcing the firmware to only trust user-signed binaries.’
So if you cannot disable ‘secure boot’ in your UEFI/BIOS, you have to enrol the extra keys. Take a look at enter link description here for example.
Or you can try putting your harddisk in another system, install it there, and put the harddisk in your own system again. Although I am not sure if that will work ( missing extra keys in UEFI ).
Will it allow you to install Ubuntu to an external drive? Or does that fail too? If that fails is surely is UEFI that stops the installation proces.
And check the health of your hardware as well.
Hoping to have pointed you in the right direction.
Edit 211113 Are you sure your USB stick is ok? If you have another one, try it with that.
Trying to use bash on Windows and got no installed distributions message
When I go to that url which opens the Windows Store app, there no sign of any Linux distribution there. My windows version is(as in my right bottom corner of the screen):
I follow the instructions in this guide Installation Guide and also was watching this video Editing code and files on Windows Subsystem for Linux on Windows 10 from Scott Hanselman, but they didn’t get the message of no installed distribution. Any Help?
Cygwin could be alternative, a [Linux/Unix]-like environment for Windows: cygwin.com . you can get bash, and many other things, from this interface.
Stack Overflow is a site for programming and development questions. This question appears to be off-topic because it is not about programming or development. See What topics can I ask about here in the Help Center. Perhaps Super User or Unix & Linux Stack Exchange would be a better place to ask.
@jww is not a direct development question, but I need this bash on windows to test some new stuff I am trying with .net core, and all the new stuff in the new Microsoft tech stack, also this is related to programming because a common Windows user does not need this I think.
I read this article today Ubuntu is now available for download on the Windows Store, when open the store shows Ubuntu as not installed app though

When the Windows Store opened, there was no Distro to choose, then I found this command lxrun /install and worked for me as well.
You will get something like this as an output:
C:\WINDOWS\system32>lxrun /install Warning: lxrun.exe is only used to configure the legacy Windows Subsystem for Linux distribution. Distributions can be installed by visiting the Microsoft Store: https://aka.ms/wslstore This will install Ubuntu on Windows, distributed by Canonical and licensed under its terms available here: https://aka.ms/uowterms Type "y" to continue: y Downloading from the Microsoft Store. 100% Extracting filesystem, this will take a few minutes. Would you like to set the Ubuntu locale to match the Windows locale (en-FI)? The default locale is en_US. Type "y" to continue: y Please create a default UNIX user account. The username does not need to match your Windows username. For more information visit: https://aka.ms/wslusers Enter new UNIX username: Enter new UNIX password: Retype new UNIX password: passwd: password updated successfully Installation successful! No distros of Linux will install.
Post by thejunkman » Sun Jul 24, 2011 6:18 pm
No distros (Mint, ubuntu, debian) will install regardless of what methods I’m trying to use (cd, dvd, usb stick) I’m 30 seconds away from throwing this machine out the window and buying a premade windows 7 machine.
I replaced the dvd drive and it allows me to «install» mint. By install i mean walks me all the way through the installation process, then when I restart it spits the dvd out and then will not load the OS. I switch the boot order in Bios to find the harddrive where mint is installed and nothing. If I boot from the cd, mint loads and acts as if it hasn’t been installed. If I follow the installation prompts it can see the old install and asks me if I want to install over it. I’m not that much of a noob, I’ve used ubuntu as my primary OS for the last 2 years. I am seriously about to give up on linux though, this is rip your hair out and jump out the window type stuff.

I’m choosing the 160gb harddrive as it is the ONLY drive I have attached to the computer. If I take the hard drive out of the case and attach it to a hard drive reader, I can see all of the components of the Linux mint OS. Everything is installed from the cd.

formated hard drive. Made a USB stick start up disk with mint LTS as the distro. Booted up computer, switched boot order to USB stick in bios. Booted into MintLTS installed and it works. Canceled order for Windows 7 OEM. Note to self sticks only for installs from here on out. A few issues with Nvidia drivers but this machine is for playing around with MIXXX so it really doesn’t matter

Nope. I’ve installed various varieties of ubuntu on 10 computers over the last 2 years. Most of the installs were done with LiveCDs and the 2 netbooks I installed remix on were done using a USB stick. The only thing I can think of is that the mirror I downloaded the ISO from could have had an issue. I do find it odd that I tried 11.04 , netbook, mint and debian, and none of them would install correctly. Initially I download the distros onto a machine running ubuntu LTS and burned an ISO image discs. When these failed I assumed it was the discs and bought new ones. I then downloaded the distros again, but this time onto a machine running Windows 7. I burned ISO images using the default windows burning program (there is an option in 7 to burn an image) and the new discs that I purchased. These had the same result as the first set (allowed me to run the install but after I restart no OS could be found , then rebooting with the disc in prompted me to install all over again). Finally I created a startup disc on a USB stick on a machine running ubuntu LTS. I booted from the stick and followed the install instructions (ISO was for MInt LTS).

I’ve also had problems with defective downloads from mirrors. The distro is highly compressed, so any burp can lead to unpredictable failures, often during the install but sometimes when it reaches running state.
I now use torrents since they error check very effectively.
Edit to add: your situation seems more like a bad batch of DVDs or a burner that needs a bit of cleaning.
