Bluetooth: Protocol not available

Post by MisterMe » Fri Sep 11, 2020 5:44 am

I seem to have done something stupid and destroyed my bluetooth setup. I recently purchased the Sony WH1000XM4 headphones and connected them in Mint. I installed blueman and it connected right away and has been working fine all week.

This morning I decided to check if my connection was using LDAC. After surfing through a few forums I found a reference to the command: «pactl list» to show if LDAC was found somewhere. I didn’t see it, so I googled to find a reference for installing it somehow. I found a recent post:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:eh5/pulseaudio-a2dp
sudo apt update
sudo apt install libavcodec-dev libldac pulseaudio-module-bluetooth

From this point forward I can no longer connect to my headphones. I get ‘Connection Failed: blueman.bluez.errors.DBusFailedError: Protocol not available’ when attempting to connect the headset in the blueman app.

1) removing all the above packages
2) removing the repo ‘ppa:eh5/pulseaudio-a2dp’ and updating
3) removing and reinstalling blueman
4) removing and reinstalling pulseaudio-module-bluetooth
5) restarting pulseaudio: ‘sudo pulseaudio -k’

That was to start with. Since then I’ve been trying to uninstall and reinstall various things and restarting my machine over and over to see if something could possibly work.

Possibly relevant hardware and software info:

I’ve been working on this for 4 hours straight with no success. I know very little about the bluetooth system, so any help would be deeply appreciated.

Arch Linux

I’m an idiot and didn’t follow all of the directions on the wiki.
The solution to my problem:

sudo pacman -S pulseaudio-bluetooth
sudo nano /etc/bluetooth/main.conf

add line «Enable=Source,Sink,Media,Socket» under [general]

Props to adesh and HilmTye for helping me with this

So. yeah. I’ve spent twelve hours trying to solve this problem.
I can’t connect with my device, but I can pair.

I also have a whole bloatload of KDE apps- otherwise it’s a clean install.

I’ve made three attempts at this: One using modern methods, one using ancient methods, and one using both ancient and modern methods.

Here is a list of packages I’ve installed:

bluez bluez-utils pulseaudio-bluetooth blueman dbus alsa-plugins pulseaudio pulseaudio-alsa pavucontrol ponymix

Here is my error in console:

Here is my error in the «bluetooth devices» GUI (I think blueman installed the gui?)

(googling suggests that the «XCB error» entries are related to a KDE bug, so I’m thinking they’re not relevant? I’m pretty much an idiot though, so I shouldn’t have biased you with my irrelevant opinion.)

tl;dr: My computer’s insane inner-voices are all fairly unanimous: I’m missing bluetooth protocols.

This problem has a bounty of 12 cookies to the first man who points me toward the solution.

No supported bluetooth protocol stack found

I use windows 7 and C#, .net4.6.1 in VS2017. I used bluetooth CSR 4.0 dongle and csr hormony bluetooth stack as the third party Bluetooth drivers.. I followed this to write a hcitool program : Looking to write Bluetooth ‘hcitool’ equivelant in Windows But when I tried to run the program to connect the BLE device. error occurs at this line
var dev = new BluetoothDeviceInfo(_searchAddress); The error is : No supported bluetooth protocol stack found. I have double checked and the parameters I pass is right(info + the device address)

cannot connect iphone 7 by bluetooth with ipad series 8

Ok, thanks. It is more clear to me. Btw when i try to connect them by bluetooth and i do the way you discri2bed, it fails. I was thinking the bluetooth version of the iphone7 is 3.0 or so and that cause the problem. And i can connect my samsung m20 and my laptop with the ipad. So it’s weird the iphone cannot. The iphone connect also to the laptop and the samsung.

But after your repley it’s clear for.

Thanks for taking your time to explain me.

Merry Christmas, Franciscus

Correct, as there is no supported Bluetooth protocol to do so. What are you hoping to accomplish? There is usually an easier method.

What, specifically, are you attempting to achieve by pairing an iPhone and iPad over a Bluetooth connection?

Whilst it is technically possible to do so, for the majority of applications, Bluetooth pairing of an iPad and iPhone is entirely pointless. If your intention is to use Cellular Hotspot features of your iPhone, this link is optimally achieved using the native WiFi hotspot connection — this being a largely automated process. Hotspot connections over WiFi offer substantially greater throughput, range and reliability.

If you are exploring one of the very few “edge-cases” where it is necessary to pair iPad and iPhone using Bluetooth, both devices must be simultaneously placed in Bluetooth Discovery Mode.
