Nokia WiFi Beacon 1 Mesh Router Review

I’ve been working with computers for ages, starting with a multi-year stint in purchasing for a major IBM reseller in New York City before eventually landing at PCMag (back when it was still in print as PC Magazine). I spent more than 14 years on staff, most recently as the director of operations for PC Labs, before hitting the freelance circuit as a contributing editor.

The Bottom Line

The Nokia WiFi Beacon 1 Mesh Router is a three-piece mesh system that delivers reasonably fast throughput, but it’s missing some of the features we’ve come to expect in a whole-home Wi-Fi system.

Nokia’s WiFi Beacon 1 Mesh Router ($299.99 for the three-pack) is a whole-home Wi-Fi system that uses 802.11ac Wave 2 circuitry and mesh technology to eliminate dead spots in your home. It delivers solid throughput performance and, as is the case with most Wi-Fi systems, it’s a snap to install. That said, it doesn’t offer the robust parental controls, user-friendly QoS options, and built-in malware protection that you get with our Editors’ Choice, the TP-Link Deco M9 Plus.

Three’s Company

The Beacon 1 can be ordered as a single unit ($129.99) or in a three-pack ($299.99) as reviewed here. The nodes, which are identical and provide up to 1,500 square feet of coverage each, are mini-towers done up in a glossy white finish with a black recessed top and an LED indicator on the front. They measure 5.9 by 4.5 by 1.6 inches (HWD) and are designed to stand upright on any flat surface. The LED indicator is solid blue/green when the node has a good mesh connection, is solid yellow when the mesh connection is less than optimal, and is red when the connection is bad. Around back are a gigabit LAN port and a gigabit WAN port. The WAN port is used to connect the main router to your modem and can be used for wired backhaul on the satellite nodes.

The Beacon is a dual-band 2×2 AC1200 system that can reach maximum data rates of up to 300Mbps on the 2.4GHz band and up to 867Mbps on the 5GHz band. It uses 802.11ac Wave 2 technology with support for MU-MIMO (simultaneous data streaming) and beamforming (direct-to-client signal transmissions). It also supports automatic band steering, where the system decides which radio band to use, but you have the option to assign a radio band to each device if you prefer.

You can manage the Beacon 1 system from a phone or tablet using a mobile app (iOS or Android) or from a PC using a web portal. The mobile app is easy to use, but offers limited settings. For example, you’ll have to use the web portal to configure things like port forwarding, port triggering, and firewall settings. Moreover, parental controls in the mobile app are rather weak and are limited to granting access to specific devices. If you use the web portal you can schedule access by MAC address but there are none of the age-appropriate site filter presets or one-touch internet pause options that you get with the Gryphon Smart WiFi Mesh System and the TP-Link Deco M4.

Additionally, there are no Quality of Service (QoS) settings in the mobile app, and the QoS settings in the web portal require knowledge of L2 and L3 technologies. As such, these settings are very difficult to configure and are all but useless for the average home user. Also missing here are the robust anti-malware tools that you get with the TP-Link Deco M9 Plus that protect the network and clients from virus infections, phishing, hacker intrusions, and other malicious content.

The mobile app opens to a Devices screen with three rings, where each ring represents a node. Here, you can see which client devices are connected to each node. Below the rings is a list of client devices with a signal strength meter. Tap any device to see which node it’s connected to and which radio band it’s using. The Band Selection setting lets you configure how the device will connect to the network: You can choose Automatic to have the nodes decide which band will offer the best performance, or you can assign the client to the 2.4GHz band or the 5GHz band. Below the Band Selection tab you can see the current transmit and receive connection speeds in Mbps.

Tap the three-bar icon in the upper left corner to open a menu with Devices, Guest Access, Add Beacon, and Settings options. Devices takes you back to the opening screen and Guest Access takes you to a screen where you can enable guest networking, create a guest password, and share the password and SSID via email or a text message. Use the Add Beacon option to add additional nodes, and Settings to edit the Wi-Fi name and password and to access the Parental Controls, which as mentioned above is limited to granting or denying client access to the network. Advanced settings are also limited: You can enable Bridge mode and choose a WAN setting (DHCP, Static, PPPoE), but that’s all.

Solid Performance

Installing the Beacon1 system for my testing was easy. I started by downloading the mobile app and tapped New Setup. I was prompted to scan the QR code on the bottom of the node marked Start and followed the app’s instructions to connect the router’s WAN port to my modem plug in the router’s power cord, and restart my modem. I pressed the router’s power button and waited about 4 minutes for the LED to turn blue/green. I tapped Next and within a few seconds the Beacon was ready.

I created an account, verified the account by email, and tapped Add Another Beacon. I scanned the QR code on the secondary node, placed it my living room (two rooms away from the main router node), powered it up, and waited about 45 seconds for the LED to pulse yellow. I tapped Next and waited close to 3 minutes for the app to find the node. Once connected, the app informed me that my connection was strong (fantastic, in fact) so I gave the node a location. I repeated this process for the third node, placed it in my basement, and the installation was finished.

The Beacon 1 turned in solid scores on our throughput performance tests. The main router’s score of 454Mbps on the close-proximity (same room) test was higher than what we saw with the EnGenius ESR530 and the Mercku M2 Swarm routers but still about 100Mbps slower than the TP-Link Deco M9 Plus router. On the 30-foot test, the Beacon 1 router managed 205Mbps, once again besting the EnGenius ESR530 and the Mercku M2 Swarm routers, but not the TP-Link Deco M9 Plus router.

The Beacon 1 satellite node’s score of 240Mbps on the close-proximity test was 100Mbps faster than the EnGenius ESR530 node but a tad slower (15Mbps) than the Mercku M2 Swarm node. The TP-Link Deco M9 Plus node scored a speedy 386Mbps on this test. On the 30-foot test, the Beacon 1 node delivered 195Mbps, beating the EnGenius ESR530 and the Mercku M2 Swarm nodes, but trailing the TP-Link Deco M9 Plus by more than 100Mbps.

Features vs. Price

If your Wi-Fi router is having trouble servicing every room in your house, the Nokia WiFi Beacon 1 Mesh Router can help. This three-piece system is a cinch to install and delivers relatively fast throughput, and it can be managed from a mobile app or from a PC using a web portal. That said, its parental controls are limited, and its QoS settings are overcomplicated and not very user-friendly. Additionally, this system lacks anti-malware software that protects your network and everyone connected to it. For the same money, the TP-Link Deco M9 Plus offers the same coverage (4,500 square feet), better performance, robust parental controls and QoS settings, and malware protection. It also serves as a home automation hub. As such, it remains our Editors’ Choice for whole-home Wi-Fi systems.
