[SOLVED] Problems with nvidia drivers
Post by ForeverNoob » Tue Nov 24, 2020 9:48 am
Got a strange thing here: After installing mint (20) I tried to install newest nvidia drivers (455) using Driver Manager. They didn’t work. I tried every other version and the only one that worked was 340, so I stayed with it. After a couple of weeks tried again, this time 455 installed and worked fine. Today it stopped working, and this time I was only able to install 390. Any clues?

What does «didn’t work» mean? Did you check to make sure they were installed properly, because that sometimes is an issue.
Please give us information about your install by entering this command in a terminal:
Select >from the mini toolbar above the textbox where you type your reply and enclose the results of the command between the code markers
Results
. This will let us know how Mint sees your hardware.
Please also provide the results of the below command and place the results within code tags. It is possible your system now has files from multiple driver packages since Driver Manager has been known to not always completely remove packages from prior drivers.

Hello, I have the same issue with the 455 nvidia drivers, that was working properly, but today (Tue Nov 24) they stop working this after this update :
The drivers no longer work (low resolution / material acceleration disabled)
I restore open source driver / restart / try this commands :
sudo apt-get remove —purge nvidia*
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
and tried to reinstalled 455 drivers but they don’t work anymore.
I reinstalled 450 drivers and they work.

Stick with 450 branch if possible as that is the newest long-lived driver series, 455 is a brand new short-lived release and also won’t carry any benefits for a GTX750 ti. Linux driver releases from nvidia aren’t like the windows ones and do not carry the game optimizations, so there’s no need to update unless they address a bug you are encountering with video playback, vulkan, openGL or general desktop acceleration.

The original poster has the GTX750 ti and has not yet responded. He/she may have a different issue because of installing so many drivers.

You actually may have had a different issue than the original poster, but I agree with antikythera that you should just keep using the 450 Driver and for the reason stated (it’s in the long-lived branch).
