Can I Pair A Bluetooth Headset With 2 Phones Simultaneously?

It is not possible for a regular Bluetooth headset to be connected to two phones simultaneously. Why?

A Bluetooth connection is established when two devices that support Bluetooth agree to connect via an established protocol. Part of this protocol includes an identification process in which each device is given a unique identifier.

When you connect your Bluetooth headset to your phone, the phone and headset share their respective identifiers. The phone then stores the identifier of the headset.

When you want to connect to another phone, the new phone will not be able to recognize the headset because it does not have the headset’s identifier stored.

You will need to disconnect the headset from the first phone before you can connect it to the second phone.

So, if you have two phones and want to use a Bluetooth headset with both of them, you will need to connect and disconnect the headset each time you want to switch phones. This can be a bit of a hassle, but it is currently the only way to do it.

Are there Bluetooth Headsets that Can Connect to 2 Phones at a Time?

So your Bluetooth headset doesn’t have the Multipoint feature or you don’t want to buy a new one? Don’t worry, there is another way that you can connect your Bluetooth headphones to multiple devices simultaneously.

While it may not always work, I have found that this hack works with some Bluetooth headphones. Here’s what to do:

Put the headset in pairing mode: This is usually done by holding down the power button until the LED starts blinking.

With one phone, establish a connection with the headset: Once the headset is in pairing mode, go to your phone’s Bluetooth settings and select the headset from the list of available devices.

Turn Off Bluetooth on the first phone: While doing this, turn on Bluetooth on the second phone and pair it with the headset. While pairing, turn on Bluetooth on the first phone and make sure it is in close proximity to the second phone.

The two phones should now be able to connect to the headset simultaneously. Again, as I pointed out earlier, this trick may not work with all headphones but it’s definitely worth a try if you want to connect your Bluetooth headset to two phones simultaneously.

Benefits of Connecting a Bluetooth Headphone to 2 Phones Simultaneously

You may be wondering; why would anyone want to connect a Bluetooth headphone to two phones simultaneously?

Well, there are actually quite a few benefits to doing this. For starters, it allows you to take calls from either phone without having to disconnect and reconnect the headset each time.

It also allows you to listen to music from both phones at the same time. This can be useful if you have a lot of music stored on both phones and don’t want to miss out on any of it.

Lastly, it can be helpful if you use one phone for work and the other for personal calls. This way, you can take calls from either phone without having to worry about missing an important call.

How to connect 2 Bluetooth audio headsets to an Android phone?

How can two people listen to audio on an Android phone over Bluetooth? I.e. they have two Bluetooth headsets and want to pair both at the same time?

As in most things, it depends. In this case, since you do not state your device, I will demonstrate from mine, a Samsung 8, running Android 9 (One UI). It explicitly allows dual Bluetooth through settings. If this is your device, click through to it at

Settings > Connections > Bluetooth > Advanced > Dual Audio > ON

The setting allows sound to two different Bluetooth devices.

If your device is different, look for the capability along a similar setting path.

Most Android phones do not have the feature that allows more than one device to connect concurrently, but it’s probably possible to send audio to two Bluetooth devices with extra hardware.

If your phone has an audio jack, that signal can be split into two using an adapter. That would then have two wired headphones working. You could probably buy the wired splitter for $10 or so.

If your phone has an audio jack and would like to connect two Bluetooth devices, you can buy a multi-point Bluetooth Transmitter, also called Bluetooth transmitter splitter sender, which allows two devices to pair with it, and you connect the transmitter to the audio out jack of the phone. eBay has them for under $20.

If your phone doesn’t have an audio jack, There are many small, rechargeable Bluetooth receivers that can receive audio from your phone. They output on an audio jack, and you could proceed as above. If you need just audio, it would probably be fine, but if you want audio synced with a video you’re watching, there would probably be a latency issue with receiving and retransmitting the signal.

It’s possible that some company has produced or will produce a single device that offers two Bluetooth connection points for a reasonable price, and that might even address the latency problem.

Multipoint explained. One headset for all your phones.

Imagine a future where a single headset takes care of all your calls and audio. Say it’s playing music from your laptop, when your cell phone starts ringing. Music is paused, and the headset is now channeling the cell phone call. You press a headset button to start a second call through a connected desk phone, and then you merge the two calls together into a conference – all without taking off your headset.

Does that sound a bit like science fiction? Well, it isn’t. This technology is called “multipoint,” and it’s been here for a while.

A bit of history: While Bluetooth headsets have been around since the year 2000, being able to connect one to more than a single phone at the same time is a relatively new development. Multipoint technology emerged in the mid-2000s and has been continuously refined and improved ever since. But what in the world is it, and how does it work?

Simple multipoint

In the case of simple multipoint, a Bluetooth headset is connected to two separate devices at the same time. When one of them rings, the headset knows which one it is. So when you answer the call, the headset will automatically stream it from the right device.

If you’re already talking on your first phone, the headset will alert you if there’s an incoming call on a second one. You can then pick up this second call directly from the same headset.

In practice, simple multipoint is useful in many different cases. For example:

• Having a work and personal phone with you, both connected to the same headset.
• Using the headset for Skype without losing connection to your primary cell phone.
• Playing “Candy Crush Saga” on your tablet with full sound effects without worrying about missing an important call on your work phone.
• You get the picture…

Simple multipoint comes with one minor inconvenience: When you answer a second incoming call, your headset actually drops the connection to the call you’re already on. So you can inadvertently hang up on your best friend while answering a nuisance call from a telemarketer.

Fortunately, something called “advanced multipoint” takes care of that issue.

Advanced multipoint

Advanced multipoint is almost exactly the same as simple multipoint…except more advanced. Bad jokes aside, the primary function of advanced multipoint is the same: There are two connected devices and one headset that can answer two separate calls.

But – in the case of advanced multipoint – the first call is not dropped when you pick up the second incoming call. Instead, the first call is put on hold, so you can return to it once you’re done with the other one. In fact, you can keep switching between the two calls, putting them on hold interchangeably.

With advanced multipoint, you can quickly yell at the bothersome telemarketer and get back to your friend at the press of a button. Advanced multipoint is becoming the standard for most new Bluetooth headsets.

Triple connectivity

Some of the newer professional headsets take this a step further. These headsets have a docking base with a nifty touch screen. The base unites all of your connections – from cell phone to desk phone to computer. As such, you can connect to three devices at once and control them all via the touch screen.

These professional headsets let you not only switch between calls but even merge them into one conversation. So now you can make your friend yell at the telemarketer on your behalf. I discuss this triple connectivity in more detail in this blog post.
