Oracle Linux — лучшая замена CentOS (по мнению Oracle)

Oracle продолжает агрессивную рекламу Oracle Linux — дистрибутива, основанного на исходных текстах RedHat Enterprise Linux. На страничке рекламы расписаны преимущества дистрибутива в сравнении с открытым проектом CentOS. Основной упор делается на скорость выхода обновлений ядра Linux, которая, по сведениям Oracle, сильно отстаёт от Oracle Linux, задерживаясь на месяцы. Примечательно, что при сравнении скорости выхода обновлений не был учтён репозиторий обновлений «Continuous Release».

Как показало сравнение скоростей выхода обновлений Oracle и CentOS CR, команда CentOS, как правило, выпускает обновления на несколько дней раньше Oracle.

сначала надо людей набрать, а потом лавочку прикрыть. Как у них софт скачивать — это ужас какой-то. Попробуй еще найди что нужно (вспомнилась java).

red hat срочняк надо запилить скрипт ol2rhel.sh

С RHEL кишка тонка тягаться. К тому же у CentOS аудитория шире — очень много тех, кому хочется RHEL, а денег нету.

CentOS или Oracle Linux для СУБД Oracle?

Встал вопрос — какую из перечисленных систем использовать для разворачивания СУБД Oracle? Про первую знаю, что она основана на кодовой базе RHEL, насчёт второй не знаю ничего — ни как у них с обновлениями, ни насчёт того, стоит ли вообще связываться. Есть опасения, что рано или поздно Oracle не выдержит конкуренции и прикроет проект.

Особой разнице нет: при использовании CentOS Вам придется доустановить с десяток пакетов и подправить несколько системных конфигов. В случае с OracleLinux все уже сделано, только подогнать эти конфиги под свои параметры системы. Единственный плюс в использовании OracleLinux вижу лишь в изначальной заточке под данную СУБД. Но в работе эта «заточка» особо не проявляется. OracleLinxu, как и CentOS основан на RHEL, все полностью совместимо, начиная от пакетов и заканчивая путями конфигурационных файлов. По поводу опасения — это Вы зря, не закроют.

А вы видите разницу? В OEL есть собственные ядра (у меня с ними не стартует supermicro из-за модуля raid),но кроме них OEL содержит, и ядра RHEL. В остальном они совместимы и по пакетам и бинарно. Одна система может быть преобразована в другую, просто установкой, другого репозитория. У OEL только одно удобство для установки СУБД это пакет oracle-validated в репозитории, при установке которого yum скачает все зависимости оракл. Но никто вам не запрещает установить этот пакет на centos или rhel. заранее его скачав, получите тот же эффект. Так что это «одного поля ягодки», и разницу в эксплуатации вы не заметите. Оракл даже файл redhat-release, для совместимости оставил, пример с ОЕЛ:

# cat /etc/redhat-release
Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5.9 (Tikanga)
# cat /etc/enterprise-release

Под Oracle лучше использовать то, что они рекомендуют, а именно Oracle Linux. Как минимум из коробки получаете небольшой тюнинг ОС под эту СУБД.
Ни каких особых выйгрышей поставив CentOS Вы не получите в данном случае.
