# sudo touch /etc/timeshift.json
should create the file that the upgrade check looks for to validate timeshift is installed. I’m not sure why mine wasn’t at the expected location, but it wasn’t and this quick fix got past the error.

If the issue is disk space, another option is to save the snapshot to a USB flash drive. Not important if you intend to do regular install if upgrade doesn’t work (and sometimes it doesn’t), but a really good idea if you would rather revert than do a fresh install.
Notice this is a thread from 2018 and the OP only ever had one post (this one).

In 2022, upgrading to Mint 21, you can skip timeshift checks in the preferences menu of the Mint Upgrade Tool. Just click on the hamburger menu on the top right.

This is the answer that wins the day, in my opinion. This is how I would do it.
Of course, when the topic was started that option did not exist yet. which goes to show how confusing it is if we revive old topics, so i’ll close this one now.
If your issue is solved, kindly indicate that by editing the first post in the topic, and adding [SOLVED] to the title. Thanks!

without, actually UN-installing the program:
— just uncheck all of those pre-set schedules & it then should not ‘run’ any more schedules.

do you mean that it’s impossible to stop timeshift
and the only way is un-installing the whole program??
it’s a bit disconcerting.
in any case it seems to me that it’s impossible
to uncheck all. I can chose, f.i., day, mounth. but no «never»..
and so on

In addition to previous post, I think if you are running LM19 that there will be an entry for it in startup programs.

No, it’s very easily possible by doing exactly what Pierre said, just clear all checkboxes on the «Schedule» tab in «Settings». If you don’t activate any schedule (and none are active by default) then it will never take snapshots automatically.

[SOLVED] Deleting Timeshift snapshots
Post by Apple pi maker » Sun Mar 27, 2022 1:34 pm
Problem: How do I delete Timeshift snapshots that seem to be filling «Filesystem root»?
When I start the laptop, it presents this warning: «The volume ‘Filesystem root’ has only 180.8 MB disk space remaining.» The amount of remaining disk space decreases every time I boot the laptop.
Running «df -h» in terminal shows that the Filesystem root partition is full. The partition’s size is 26Gb. «Properties» indicates that the «timeshift» folder in «/» is 12Gb.
When I click on «File System» in the panel on the left of any window, «/»‘s contents appear and «timeshift» is one of the files in «/». When I click on «timeshift», I get seven folders labeled «snapshots» or «snapshots-*». Two of those folders contain two snapshots each («2021-12-10_13-00-01» is one of the snapshots.) All four snapshots are four months old and are no longer needed. When I right click on any snapshot, a menu appears, but «delete» is grayed out, so I can’t delete it, and drag-and-drop does not work, so I can’t move the snapshots out of the Filesystem root partition. I can’t get rid of these snapshots.
Two of the four snapshots are in the folder labeled «snapshots» where each appears as a folder with the date below the folder as a label. Two more are in the folder labeled «snapshots-daily» where each appears as a folder with the date as a label and an arrow pointing to 1:30. Does the arrow mean that these copies are executable?
When I open Timeshift — the app — to delete these snapshots, they are not anywhere in Timeshift, not even in «hidden files», so I cannot delete them through Timeshift.
I have Timeshift set to save snapshots to a usb stick, not to the File System partition, but these 2021 snapshots are not anywhere on the usb stick.
I was able to get to the Timeshift folder in terminal, and I figured that I could type «rm 2021-12-10_13-00-01», but I decided to seek advice from the community before doing anything with «rm». The files appear in green, indicating that they are executable files, I think.
I thank you for reading this and for any help.

How to delete Timeshift
Post by stevengarland » Mon Jun 01, 2020 10:45 am
I installed Timeshift but found it very clumsy. I deleted the app but now cannot delete the data files. I seem to have no control over them as I «don’t own them.»
Suggestions? I can’t believe that I am just stuck with files that I don’t want.

Think you are making a mistake, but.
Open up your file manager (nemo), navigate to the folder containing the snapshots and right click, open as root. You will then be able to delete the files.

I didn’t like all the space it took up. Could not seem to move it to outside media.

All you can specify with timeshift is the destination partition (which must be ext4 or other linux fs), where that partition mounts is then up to you. If on an external drive that will typically get mounted as /media/you/mylabel (or the UUID). You can change it if you want. My timeshift (and backintime) snapshots are stored on an internal/removable drive that gets mounted through fstab as /media/ultrabay, but I could have mounted it somewhere else, e.g. /mnt.
You would be better off sorting out the mount point than dumping timeshift, it’s saved my bacon on more than one occasion. And it doesn’t take up huge amounts of space, first time it will copy everything, thereafter only what has changed or is new.
