Bryant Park Movies
Every summer Monday night from mid June to mid August HBO sponsors a selection of films which are screened in Manhattan’s Bryant Park. The park is located between 5th and 6th avenues from 40th to 42nd streets in midtown just behind the central library building. A large screen and heavy duty sound system are placed at the western end of the park on which films are projected as the evening turns dark. The crowd starts to gather in late afternoon on the benches and tables spread throughout the park. On the central lawn people lay down blankets and even tents to claim their spot. Many moviegoers bring food and drinks, and a general festival atmosphere takes over. The films tend to be a mixture of old and new classics with a rare dud mixed in. Snacks are available at a few nearby delis and a Crumbs bakery about 1 block away. This season’s lineup includes: Easy Rider, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Cool Hand Luke, Airlplane! and Dirty Harry.
Shakespeare in the Park
From June through August the Public Theater stages 8 weeks of Shakespeare in Central Park’s Delacorte Theater at no cost. Tickets for the plays are given away free on a first come first serve basis starting at 1PM at the theater on the day of each performance. They are also distributed in various locations throughout the boroughs on a single day basis so check the schedule. If you can’t make it to the ticket booths there are also online ticket drawings which you can register for and receive free if your lot is chosen. The performances start at 8PM on most nights with an off-day scattered in here and there. This season’s plays are Measure for Measure and All’s Well That Ends Well.
The High Line:
The original High Line runs from Gansevoort Street at Washington Street up to West 20th at 10th Avenue. An additional High Line has just been opened which extends up to 34th Street and the West Side Highway. The High Line is a section of reclaimed elevated railroad which once carried subway cars up and down the west side of Manhattan. After laying derelict for years the city and a group of private donors reworked and redecorated the tracks with walkways, greenery, and various design elements. The resulting High Line is extremely popular and a great use of the space. On the path you will have elevated views of the city, its buildings, the Hudson River and the world below. The High Line is open every day.
Socrates Sculpture Park:
Located on the banks of the East River in Long Island City, Queens is this artist haven and workshop set within a former industrial park. The park is filled with ever changing artworks created by local artists and labeled with names and information about the various projects. The artwork is backed by a view of the city skyline and visitors are completely free to wander, touch, sit and picnic or critique the works. On some days visitors can even watch artists in the process of creating either in the large outdoor supply pile and studio or assembling completed pieces on the lawns. The park is open every day from 10AM to dusk.
