When I search for WiFi I have the hotspot WiFi, which is fine, and then the �BMW-Direct. xxx� WiFi, which I assume is the connection to the car. The manual says just connect, but I�m being prompted for a password. any ideas?

That is part of the Wirelss CarPlay system where initial handshake/setup has to done by BlueTooth to set up the Wifi connection. So no, you cannot connect to it yourself directly.

The only one you can connect to is the «My Hotspot XXXX» Wifi if you car comes with such feature. But that’s only for Internet access and won’t help what you want.
