About a week ago I started having some problems with my (android) phone’s YouTube app when it came to using it via my car’s Bluetooth system. I was hoping to get your feedback and / or solutions.

(Just a note: I connect my phone via Bluetooth and when I play a video, the system plays the audio only. I keep the phone tucked away and the system plays audio only. This way I have no distractions and can listen to podcasts or music to help pass time when I drive.)

So, up until recently, after I’d connect my phone to the car’s Bluetooth system, I used to be able to use the car’s screen to pause, play and skip the YouTube videos forward or backwards and the app would respond accordingly. Similarly, I was able to use my steering wheel remote function to skip the videos forward or backwards as well and the app responded also.

However since last week, the app has been buggy. I am able to connect and play a video via the above mentioned set up, but the car’s screen control and steering wheel buttons have no effect on the app anymore. The app just doesn’t respond. I can’t skip the videos nor can I pause/play them using the car’s functions.

The controls work perfectly when I am using other apps though, for example my phone’s music app. I can use both the screen and steering wheel buttons to pause, play and skip the music. Even the VLC player on my phone works in this set up, but it’s just the Youtube app that is not working properly.

I have tried the following (but none of them work):

reset my car’s steering wheel remote function
removed my phone from the car’s bluetooth system then added it again
deleted the youtube app’s cache and restarted the app, phone and car again
Updated the youtube app

Afterwards I tested other apps and they still worked, just not youtube. This is so strange.

The only way I can get youtube app to cooperate is when a video is playing, I need to manually pause the video on my phone and then play the video and only then the app responds to the bluetooth controls and steering wheel remote functions. I can skip forwards or backwards only when there are no ads. But I can’t do this while driving obviously so this solution is pretty much useless.

I understand this is a rather niche problem and a long post so I appreciate you reading this. I would be grateful for your suggestions. Thank you.

Once you’ve clicked “Add to Sonos”, you’ll be given a code that you’ll need to enter into a web browser to complete setup and successfully link your accounts. Copy this code and follow the on-screen instructions to enter your code and link your Sonos and YouTube accounts.
Once you’ve completed this step, you’ll be notified that your Sonos and YouTube Music accounts have been successfully linked. You will then be able to access your YouTube Music subscription content using your Sonos device.

Access Your YouTube Music Library

Accessing your YouTube music library from within the Sonos app is easy. Follow these steps.
