Changing default Passwords

Since the discussion about changing globally known passwords started to go off topic more and more, I decided to create a new thread.
Since I cannot move all posts out of make starting browser more obvious I fully quoted them in this post instead.

you know that the user can change the root password in the running system? if user did so telling him «toor» is the root password would be a mistake.

change the root password even via a script is possible- that holds the password only encrypted. here as example to set root password back to «toor»:

Okay; the repetition is optional. However, someone who has changed the root password at that stage is likely a more sophisticated user and the message I’m proposing is more for the newbie, such as someone running Porteus from a live disc made from a downloaded official .iso file. So, the reminder could be phrased thus: «If the root password has not been changed, the default password is . . . .»

By the way, the issue you raise also raises the issue of for whom the welcome help is intended. Users who change root passwords with scripts are probably not newbies to Linux.

My trick of using the data as encrypted in /etc/shadow is only one way to conveniently change the root password. Simply using passwd is a more common one. And changing root password when the one in use is widely known all across the intertubes is not that much of a sign of a expert Linux user, just common sense when one takes security seriously.

The Mayor of Los Angeles used to read the emails of many people. That was over a year ago. I don’t know if he ever did anything inside anyone else’s account other than read emails, like if he ever sent anything or changed settings. The city had switched to a new email provider, Gmail, and Gmail’s Google set up the accounts, giving everyone who worked for the City a default password. The same password.

That is such a high level of incompetence that I struggle deciding if one should cry about the utter lack of respect from privacy, or laugh at the sheer absurdity of stupidity rolled into one single occurrence.

But I disagree, people wanting to change the password by using the most obvious tool available — not my technique — I still consider a matter of basic sanity.

Default root password for the Live CD

I am trying to install Porteus on a portable device and when I open Porteus installer, I am asked for a root password. I tried «Porteus», «user», «password», and even leave it blank but with no avail. I watched the install video tutorial and we can see that the guy is typing 4 characters but the video is SILENT so we get no clue as to what has to typed there.

So, what is the password and where were we supposed to retrieve it. I tried to type «root password» in the forum but couldn’t get a valid answer.

guest password:guest
if you have done an usb installation, or hard disk installation, you can change the passwords as you want.

root user password is toor, unless you changed it at some point.

Please provide the output of what you have done in cli mode. Make sure that you are not using capital letters.

My default password turned out to be nimda. I didn’t set it, but toor didn’t work and it seemed worth a try.

For guest user, password is guest.

su toor #задаем пароль passwd имя-пользователя (guest или root) #отключаем автоматический вход без пароля sed -i "s|default_user guest|default_user |g" /etc/slim.conf sed -i "s|auto_login yes|auto_login no|g" /etc/slim.conf

И так, исключительно для справки: новых то юзеров создавать можно?
И вот еще. По большому счету с огромным удовольствием пользую систему, но иногда случается пожарный момент, курсор замирает и по-моему все. (Думаю, что это не из-за памяти, потому, что есть своп диск) Такое бывает? Из-за чего может быть? После резета загружаюсь заново, командная строка с надписью чего-то про disabled на 5 минут. Перезагрузился во фреше.

можно, но использовать в качестве учетной записи не советую, так как скрипты написаны под guest и root.

С фризами курсора нет, но похоже проблема кроется в ACPI.
Попробуйте обновить ядро kernel /mnt/sdb1/boot/syslinux/vmlinuz
и kernel-firmwares /mnt/sdb1/porteus/base/000-kernel.xzm

Огр. спсб. Это просто набор мечты. Сколько я не искал везде все порознь лежит, а тут все, что надо. А crippled_sources для чего кстати нужен?
Ну пока обновился, буду ждать ))
А, что ядра выше номером для Портеус еще не «обкатаны» ? Я все таки смог некогда поставить 4.12.11 , но получил кроме долгожданного РТЛ8723 кучу глюков и зависаний.

НЕ, СНОВА ФРИЗ, но все равно спасибо. Что характерно случается когда я выхожу на перекур.

необходим для сборки из исходников специфических модулей ядра, например драйверов для DVB карт, wifi адаптеров и т.д.
Глюков не замечено, только на ядре 4.9.0 проблема с ACPI.

А этот crippled_sources подключать надо, или он для формальности лежит? То есть это дополнение к «редакции» ядра что-ли? А фриз с выключением экрана в сон не может быть связан?

alexhawk2016, 05-devel.xzm и crippled_sources.xzm необходимы для сборки пакетов из исходников.
Если вы ничего не собираете из исходников, то данные модули Вам не нужны.

Собирался некогда покопаться с make искал помню в сети девел )) Спсб.
Я почему спросил про переключение в сон, потому, что зависы появляются когда я выхожу на перекур, вроде, непосредственно из-под руки еще не зависало.
