Does pro tools run on linux? (2023)
Avid Pro Tools is not available for Linux but there are plenty of alternatives that runs on Linux with similar functionality. The best Linux alternative is Audacity, which is both free and Open Source.

You can install and use it on as many computers as you want but you need your iLok connected to whatever computer you are using at the time.
With Pro Tools 10.3. 10 (or higher) and Pro Tools 11.2 (or higher), sessions are cross-platform compatible between Mac and Windows.
Audacity will do a better job on Linux (afaik Protools does not run on Linux). Protools also has a higher hardware requirement (2 hard drives, specialised sound card, more RAM. ) The price difference will also have a big impact on the money you have to spend on your other gear (such as microphones, instruments. )
Pro Tools is our Editors’ Choice for PC-based recording software; while it’s equally awesome on the Mac side, Apple Logic Pro X edges it out there thanks to its robust feature set and unbeatable value.
Supported: Windows — Windows 10 (build 21H1 only) with an Intel® i5 processor or greater. Mac — Intel® or M1 Mac with macOS Mojave (10.14. 5), macOS Catalina (10.15.
Pro Tools Ultimate is worth the money if you know how to use it or if you have the patience to learn. It’s also beneficial for audio recording and post-production work. The platform is packed with inputs, tracks, plugins, and other special features that you wouldn’t get from other DAWs.
Why: While both platforms have all the essential tools you need for sound editing, Pro Tools is slightly better at precision edits in a way that Ableton Live hasn’t refined. If you’re looking to do exact waveform edits, this is an area where Pro Tools excels.
Pro Tools is widely considered the standard among major studios for all types of audio work, including music, film, and television. As a digital audio workstation (DAW), Avid Pro Tools gives complete control over advanced recording functions, enhanced editing, effects processing, and much more.

Gamers demand high performance from their computers so harnessing this power to run Pro Tools actually makes a lot of sense.
Pro Tools works well (for the most part) on both platforms. I’ve owned and gigged at studios with both Mac & Win. I think it also comes down to which platform you are most comfortable with.
Sadly, Chrome OS doesn’t allow users to install any third-party software. This means you can’t install software like FL Studio, Mixcraft, Pro Tools, or Audacity directly onto your Chromebook.
As far as recording software goes, this is premium level stuff.

Question: What’s better with music creation and editing, FL Studio or Pro Tools? Answer: While both DAWs are good systems for recording and editing, most people agree that FL Studio stands out when it comes to music creation. It’s easier to use and produces quality results in the process.
Is MacBook air good for Pro Tools?
However, aesthetics and economics aside, the MacBook Air is also adept at running modern versions of music and audio applications like Logic, Cubase and Pro Tools, as I found when writing this review.
Macs generally run Pro Tools well, but how much horsepower you need nobody here can guess. If you are working with large sessions, especially using lot of VIs, then you will need more compute power, and memory, and potentially disk (for sample libraries as well as sessions).
It offers a wide range of applications. Professionals use Pro Tools for simple recording, mixing, film scoring, music editing, film/television audio post-production…the list goes on and on. It offers lots of additional features, including a huge amount of automation, digital processing, and even surround sound mixing.

Re: Running Pro Tools on Ubuntu
As with any program not native to Linux there are going to be issues? Is your pro tools Windows or MAC based? If its Windows based there is always wine to use for Windows emulation, but again even if you do get it up and running I can only assume there are going to be parts of it that don’t work right.
I would suggest taking a look at audacity or a ardour. I believe ardour is very close to pro tools in terms of capabilities. Both can be found in either the software center or package manager.

Thread: Pro tools
Frothy Coffee!
Pro tools
I’m trying to get my sister to switch over to ubuntu. especially now since her windows xp account seems to have gotten ‘hacked’ (like about 30 minutes ago, the pointer started to move around on its own an rearrange her files).
She is an audio technician and is hesitant because she uses protools.
I have tried wine with other windows programs but I couldnt get the hang of it. Is there a possibility for her to switch to ubuntu and use pro tools?

Re: Pro tools
I doubt it very much, Pro Tools runs custom hardware which there isn’t any support/drivers for in Linux.

Re: Pro tools
It’s doubtful Protools will run satisfactorily on wine if at all. It’s very difficult to get things like ASIO drivers to work reliably too.
I managed to get Cubase SE to work, but even that didn’t run all that well.
There is free recording software for linux, but it won’t be as good as Protools.

Re: Pro tools
i just downloaded and installed Ardour today, and actually it seems like it’s pretty good. it’s supposed to be like protools, and so far, it seems to be. i haven’t used it extensively, but it has all the basic things you’d want from professional quality recording software.
the advantage for me is that you don’t need a special soundcard/breakout box like you do for protools, but the advantage for your sister is that you can if you want, and the website advertises that some VST plugins work, so she might even be able to keep using her favourite effects.
so far it seems an excellent alternative. the obvious drawback is compatibility, so you can’t use projects on computers with pro tools, or pro tools projects with ardour, but otherwise it could suit her very well. it downloads and installs in a couple of minutes (or less) from the software center (on karmic). alternatively, check out ubuntu studio, which is a flavour of ubuntu directed specifically at this type of thing. you could download ardour and get her to check it out. IMO unless she does a lot of moving projects to different computers, she could make the switch.
or, just run a virtual machine or dual boot.
