ATI Radeon HD 2400/2600 On Linux

This week has been extremely exciting to say the least. We started by telling you about the AMD 8.41 Display Driver which is largely rewritten and offers Radeon HD 2000 product support, performance improvements, and soon will support AIGLX. Four articles looking at the R300/400, R500, and R600 performance under Linux followed that preview. Then yesterday we told you about AMD’s new open-source strategy for supporting Linux and the open-source community. Well, what do we have for you today? With the 8.41 display driver we have completed some additional benchmarks using the Radeon HD 2400PRO 256MB and Radeon HD 2600PRO 256MB graphics cards. In this article, we see if these two mid-range ATI Radeon HD 2000 graphics cards are able to compete against NVIDIA’s GeForce 8 series.

The Radeon HD 2400PRO we had used for testing was manufactured by Sapphire while the Radeon HD 2600PRO was made by ASUS. The Sapphire HD 2400PRO has a passive heatsink while the ASUS HD 2600PRO claims to run 20 degrees (°C) cooler than the reference heatsink. We had previously written a preview on the ASUS Radeon HD 2600PRO where you can find additional details about this mid-range graphics card. The test system consisted of an Abit NF-M2 nView motherboard, 2GB of DDR2-800 memory, AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ processor, and Seagate 200GB 7200.8 hard drive. The Linux distribution we had loaded up was Fedora 7 with the Linux 2.6.22.4 kernel and X server 1.3. For comparison against NVIDIA’s GeForce 8 series we had used the GeForce 8500GT 256MB and GeForce 8600GT 256MB. The 8600GT was the GV-NX86T256D from Gigabyte and the 8500GT was also made by Gigabyte. We had also tested an older ASUS X1300PRO 256MB graphics card. Benchmarks were done in Doom 3 and Quake 4.

Tutorial: How to install ATI Radeon HD 2600

Ive had this problem twice now and eventually figured it out myself, but i keep forgetting, so this guide is for any of you out there that need help setting it up as well as a reference for me for everytime my system messes up.

First of all, open a terminal window (Applications —> Accessories —> Terminal)

Type in: lspci
You will see a big output, mine was near the bottom, find:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV630 [Radeon HD 2600 Series] 01:00.1 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc RV630/M76 audio device [Radeon HD 2600 Series]

This means I have an ATI Radeon 2600, which im writing this guide for, if you have anything different, you are welcome to follow these instructions but I do not guarantee them working nor do I take any responsibility.

On the right, under Download Drivers:

Component Category = Graphics
Operating System: Linux x86 (if you have a 64bit system select the 64bit one)
Product Line: Radeon
Product Model: ATI Radeon 2xxx series

There was only 1 result for me, click Download, save it to your downloads folder.

When fully downloaded, go back to the terminal window and type in:

cd /home/paul/Downloads (change paul to your username)

sudo sh ati-driver-installer-10-3-x86.x86_64.run (if the filename is different, then change the name).

You will be asked for your password, enter it, it will take a few seconds then launch an installer.

Select the first option, then click next, then use all the reccomended options. When finished, restart your computer.

To get sound working right click on the sound icon on the top right, click sound preferences.

Go to Output and select the RV630 or whichever your one is.

If the sound still doesnt work, go into a terminal window again and type:
killall pulseaudio

Then type:
sudo alsa force-reload

Enter your password, press enter. Sound should work

This is just what worked for me after hours and hours of research, so I thought I would put it all in one place to help you people out. I tried to keep it as SIMPLE as possible. I take no responsibility for any loss of data, broken keyboards, cracked screens, melted mousemats etc etc, use at your own risk.

Anyone else feel free to add commments or suggestions other users may use to make this even easier

Edit: Dont forget to enable desktop effects, its well worth it:
Right click on the Desktop
Click Change Desktop Background
Click Visual Effects tab
Select Extra, it can take a while and the screen goes weird while it makes changes.

Решил вчера посавить открытые драйвера.

О системе:
Видеокарта RV630 PRO AGP [Radeon HD 2600 PRO AGP]
система Ubuntu 9.10 (обновлена с 9.04)

сношу fglrx, с http://ppa.launchpad.net/xorg-edgers/ppa/ubuntu ставлю пакеты с radeonhd и radeon

автогенерация xorg.conf и перезапуск.
стартуем — графический режим правильный — курсор бегает, часики крутятся и.. все черный экран с бегающим курсором
прописывал и radeon и radeonhd и удалял xorg.conf — результат однаковый

с vesa стартует нормально
поставил fglrx назад — работает

какие варианты . или подскажите почему.

Ага, и видимо на этом месте всем тут же должно стать телепатически очевидно, какого вы ставите radeon и radeonhd не из нормальных репозиториев, а из чьего-то лесного PPA.

Репозиторий пакетов для Ubuntu с последними версиями X-сервера и видеодрайверов (http://livelinux.ru/index.php?PHPSESSID=910710d422048275d1c63432a6604791&topic=4.0)
Но как то не задумывался, спасибо за пино, щас откатимся на стандартый..

Чтобы попробовать Убунту, достаточно запустить её прямо с диска!
Не путайте Убунту с Кубунту и прочими!

Да я с репозитория и обновлялся, после отката на стандартные — то же самое
а потом решил сделать

вместо рекомендуемого для radeonhd:

Видеокарта видимо не могла выводить видео в таком режиме ускорения, хотя странно что этот режим включается автоматом при отсутствии xorg.conf

Может кто посоветует источник где по русски описаны другие настройки xorg.conf для radeonhd для ускорения работы? Заранее спасибо!

PS: Спасибо кто отозвался, иногда полезно посмотреть на проблему с другой стороны, а то упрешься в что-то и не видишь иного решения.

Я конечно сравнительно новичок в линукс. но спасибо за совет, однако при установке более новых пакетов с указанного Вами репозитория в Xorg.0.log появляется:

(WW) RADEONHD(0): Accel Method XAA not supported on this chipset generation. Defaulting to EXA

а на EXA ускорении выводится только примерно 1/3 часть последней картинки которая отображалась при завершении графического режима (как я понял с какого-то видео-буфера) и все — мышь по экрану бегает а окно выбора пользователя не появляется.
удается запустить только при

но без аппаратного ускорения туго

Может такая видео карта но охота разобраться.

Еще (прошу сильно не пинать, а если пинать — то в нужном направлении) заметил в выхлопе dmesg
