How to uninstall and remove Apache2 on Ubuntu or Debian

It turns out that uninstalling Apache2 web server is not as straightforward as installing it. You will need to remove Apache2 package itself, as well as other dependent packages and its associated configurations. Here is how you remove Apache2 cleanly on Ubuntu and Debian.

The first step is to stop any running instance of Apache2, because Apache2 will not be properly removed while it is running.

$ sudo service apache2 stop

Then uninstall Apache2 and its dependent packages. Use purge option instead of remove option with apt-get command. The former option will remove dependent packages, as well as any configuration files created by them. In addition, use autoremove option as well, to remove any other dependencies that were installed with Apache2, but are no longer used by any other package.

$ sudo apt-get purge apache2 apache2-utils apache2.2-bin apache2-common $ sudo apt-get autoremove

Finally, check if there is any configuration files or manual pages belonging to Apache2, which are still not removed.

In this example, /etc/apache2 directory still exists. Since this directory (as well as any configuration files in it) is no longer necessary, go ahead and remove it manually.

This brief tutorial shows students and new users how to remove Apache and purge from Ubuntu 20.04 | 18.04.

The steps below will show you if you’re a webmaster and want to remove the Apache web server from your host.

There are two ways to uninstall or remove programs from Ubuntu and Linux systems.

You can either run the apt remove or apt purge.

When you use the remove option with apt, the command will delete the software package from the system but leave the configuration files behind.

Purge with apt will delete the software package, including all configuration files and settings.

When you want to delete Apache from Ubuntu, follow the steps below:

Remove Apache

Again, if you run apt with the remove option, it will delete Apache from the host computer but keep all configuration files intact.

If you think of removing Apache to reinstall, you may want to use the purge option.

If you simply want to remove the Apache package but critical all configuration files, then run the commands below:

The commands above delete Apache but site configuration files in the /etc/apache2 directory are left alone, including the content directory at /var/www.

Purge Apache

The purge option with apt will delete Apache and all configuration files from Ubuntu.

If you want to delete Apache, including configuration files and settings, use the purge option.

The files in the/etc/apache2 directory will be removed. However, the site content at /var/www will be left alone.

Run the commands below to remove Apache along with its configuration files.

Reinstall Apache

The command will delete Apache and install when you use the reinstall option with apt.

The reinstall option won’t change or delete any configuration file or the site content at /var/www.

It will simply delete and reinstall the Apache packages.

To reinstall Apache, run the commands below:

sudo apt reinstall apache2

How to Permanently Remove Apache2 from Linux?

Step 1: Finding All Paths of Apache2

There is another method which will not only remove the package file but configuration files as well that are associated with it as shown below:

Step 4: Verify the Apache2 Complete Removal

After running the above commands you can verify if still there is anything left related to apache by typing the below command:

As you can see that some portion of the apache2 server is still left that you can delete by typing:

Whereas the “-rf” flag in the above command is used to remove the directory forcibly.

Step 5: Verify the Complete Removal of Apache2 Again

Now you need to type the same command again if it’s been completely deleted or not by typing:

Now you can see that the above command is not displaying any path, which means that apache2 is now completely deleted.

Pro Tip: You might be aware that you can run multiple commands on the terminal, saving you time as you don’t need to enter these commands separately. Look at the example below for a better understanding:

$ sudo apt remove --autoremove apache2

Similarly, this command can be used on CentOS and Fedora by using their respective package managers.
