Enable snaps on Manjaro Linux and install riseup-vpn
Snaps are applications packaged with all their dependencies to run on all popular Linux distributions from a single build. They update automatically and roll back gracefully.
Snaps are discoverable and installable from the Snap Store, an app store with an audience of millions.
Enable snapd
Snapd can be installed from Manjaro’s Add/Remove Software application (Pamac), found in the launch menu. From the application, search for snapd, select the result, and click Apply.
Alternatively, snapd can be installed from the command line:
Once installed, the systemd unit that manages the main snap communication socket needs to be enabled:
sudo systemctl enable --now snapd.socket
To enable classic snap support, enter the following to create a symbolic link between /var/lib/snapd/snap and /snap :
sudo ln -s /var/lib/snapd/snap /snap
Either log out and back in again, or restart your system, to ensure snap’s paths are updated correctly.
Install riseup-vpn
To install riseup-vpn, simply use the following command:
sudo snap install riseup-vpn --classic
Arch Linux User Repository
Edit: Also thanks for the comment about the missing dependency.

I resolve with: pacman -S qt5-graphicaleffects

Added, thank you very much!

Can you please add qt5-svg to makedepends ? Without this installed I got the following error during build() :

The package should now compile without problems; I only changed three things, the most important of which was the commit (0.21.11). Really simple.

If you have issues installing/running riseup-vpn I recommend riseup-vpn-configurator [0]

This package is not usable anymore, but this package works fine
including these changes in PKGBUILD

sudo snap install riseup-vpn --classic
You can track beta channel, where we push versions to test:
sudo snap install riseup-vpn --classic --beta
There’s a package in AUR that tracks main branch, so expect some instabilities (early birds catch the bugs they say, and we’re thankful for that)
An ebuild is available in Gentoo’s main repository.
We haven’t updated deb.leap.se repo yet 😞 (see #466), but if you really desire a debian package you can build your own for the time being:
debuild -us -uc sudo dpkg -i ../riseup-vpn*.deb
If you’re using ubuntu, you can use kali’s ppa.
Clone this repo, install dependencies and build the application. Dependencies assume debian packages, or homebrew for osx. For Windows OS see corresponding section below. For other systems try manually, or send us a patch.
git clone git@0xacab.org:leap/bitmask-vpn.git && cd bitmask-vpn sudo make depends # do not use sudo in osx make build
If you have Ubuntu Bionic/18.04, the package in the repositories is too old. To resolve this, you can do make install_go . Do not do this if you have a later version.
You can run some tests too.
sudo apt install qml-module-qttest make test make test_ui
As for now app can be build on Win OS using Cygwin terminal.
You need to have installed and added to your user PATH (mentioned version tested in Win10):
- Go (>= go1.15.4)
- QT (>= Qt5.12.9)
- QtIFW (>= QtIFW-4.0.0)
- Cygwin64 (>= 2.905 64 bit)
- Using Cygwin Package Select window install python3 and make packages.
Note: for #5 you don’t need to add packages to PATH they will available in cygwin after installation.
git clone git@0xacab.org:leap/bitmask-vpn.git && cd bitmask-vpn
Build script uses a symbolic link in one of the stages. Unfortunately Cygwin can’t create native symlink from local non
admin user due to windows security restriction. To avoid this issue we need to call next target from cygwin terminal as
Administrator. This need to be done only once.
After relink_vendor use this to build the app:
After successful build application will be available at: build/qt/release/riseup-vpn.exe
We use transifex to coordinate translations. Any help is welcome!
Bugs? Crashes? UI feedback? Any other suggestions or complains?
When you are willing to report an issue please use the search tool first. if you cannot find your issue, please make sure to include the following information:
- the platform you’re using and the installation method.
- the version of the program. You can check the version on the «about» menu.
- what you expected to see.
- what you got instead.
- the logs of the program. The location of the logs depends on the OS:
- gnu/linux: /home//.config/leap/systray.log
- OSX: /Users//Library/Preferences/leap/systray.log , /Applications/RiseupVPN.app/Contents/helper/helper.log & /Applications/RiseupVPN.app/Contents/helper/openvpn.log
- windows: C:\Users\\AppData\Local\leap\systray.log , C:\Program Files\RiseupVPN\helper.log & C:\Program Files\RiseupVPN\openvp.log
Install Riseup VPN for Linux Mint 21
Riseup is a free and open source VPN provider for multiple platforms, including Linux and Android that promises to provide free VPN services without logging your IP address or your activities.
It runs entirely on donations and does not require an account for usage. You can directly install Riseup VPN and start using it without even setting up an account.
Riseup is available on the official linux repository and as a snap package. However, every free vpn comes with certain disadvantages, and most of the time it is getting your data sold.
Tip: You can anonymise yourself with NordVPN.
Even though Riseup VPN does not sell your data; but it has one big disadvantage, i.e. network instability. Riseup offers full anonymity for its users, but connection speed is an issue.
For this I recommend you to check out NordVPN which offers super fast speed and a secure and anonymous connection for up to 6 devices.
Install Riseup VPN from Software Manager
As I mentioned before, Riseup is available in the official repository this means you can easily install it on Linux Mint 21 from the software manager or using apt in the terminal.
Open a Terminal window ( Ctrl + Alt + T ) and run the following command:
sudo apt install riseup-vpn
This will install and set up Riseup vpn on your Linux system. To check if you have installed Riseup successfully, run the following command:
If you get an input as shown in the picture above, you have successfully installed Riseup VPN.
Install Riseup VPN using Snap.
Riseup VPN is also available as a snap package. You can get the most recent version of Riseup using Snap while the one on software manager is almost always outdated.
To install Riseup using snap on Linux mint, you need to enable snap store before proceeding with the following instructions.
Once you have enable snap store on Linux mint, you can install Riseup VPN using:
sudo snap install riseup-vpn --classic
This will install the latest version of Riseup VPN on your system. Now proceeded to the next step to know more about using Riseup on linux.
Using Riseup VPN on Linux
Riseup VPN is fairly easy to use and needs to advance configuration, unlike OpenVPN. After installation, you can directly launch and start using Riseup VPN .
You can launch Riseup with the following command using Terminal:
Riseup VPN will create a system tray menu with an icon that will indicate if the VPN is active or not.
The icon in the system tray will change according to its status, all status and their meaning is shown in the above image.
Here is a short video tutorial on how to launch Riseup VPN.
