A window switcher, Application launcher and dmenu replacement.

Rofi started as a clone of simpleswitcher, written by Sean Pringle — a popup window switcher roughly based on superswitcher. Simpleswitcher laid the foundations, and therefore Sean Pringle deserves most of the credit for this tool. Rofi (renamed, as it lost the simple property) has been extended with extra features, like an application launcher and ssh-launcher, and can act as a drop-in dmenu replacement, making it a very versatile tool.

Rofi, like dmenu, will provide the user with a textual list of options where one or more can be selected. This can either be running an application, selecting a window, or options provided by an external script.

  • An application that can support every possible use-case. It tries to be generic enough to be usable by everybody.
    • Specific functionality can be added using scripts or plugins, many exists.

        Rofi has several built-in modes implementing common use cases and can be extended by scripts (either called from Rofi or calling Rofi) or plugins.

        Below is a list of the different modes:

        • run: launch applications from $PATH, with option to launch in terminal.
        • drun: launch applications based on desktop files. It tries to be compliant to the XDG standard.
        • window: Switch between windows on an EWMH compatible window manager.
        • ssh: Connect to a remote host via ssh.
        • filebrowser: A basic file-browser for opening files.
        • keys: list internal keybindings.
        • script: Write (limited) custom mode using simple scripts.
        • combi: Combine multiple modes into one.

        Rofi is known to work on Linux and BSD.

        This section just gives a brief overview of the various options. To get the full set of options see the manpages section above

        To launch rofi directly in a certain mode, specify a mode with rofi -show . To show the run dialog:

        Specify an ordered, comma-separated list of modes to enable. Enabled modes can be changed at runtime. Default key is Ctrl+Tab . If no modes are specified, all configured modes will be enabled. To only show the run and ssh launcher:

        rofi -modes "run,ssh" -show run

        The modes to combine in combi mode. For syntax to -combi-modes , see -modes . To get one merge view, of window , run , and ssh :

        rofi -show combi -combi-modes "window,run,ssh" -modes combi

        Generate a default configuration file

        mkdir -p ~/.config/rofi rofi -dump-config > ~/.config/rofi/config.rasi

        This creates a file called config.rasi in the ~/.config/rofi/ folder. You can modify this file to set configuration settings and modify themes. config.rasi is the file rofi looks to by default.

        Rofi

        Rofi is a window switcher, run dialog, ssh-launcher and dmenu replacement that started as a clone of simpleswitcher, written by Sean Pringle and later expanded by Dave Davenport.

        Installation

        Install the rofi package for use under Xorg display servers.

        Merging support for Wayland compositors in the main branch has indefinitely stalled [1]. For Wayland support, instead install rofi-lbonn-wayland AUR or rofi-lbonn-wayland-git AUR for the developmental version. Note that these packages require a Wayland compositor that supports the Layer Shell protocol. This includes wlroots based compositors, such as Sway, and some Mir based compositors, but does not include mutter, the compositor for Gnome, for example.

        Configuration

        There are two methods of setting configuration options:

        • Local configuration. Normally, depending on XDG, in ~/.config/rofi/config.rasi .
        • Command line options:
        $ rofi -combi-modi window,drun,ssh -theme solarized -font "hack 10" -show combi

        can be expressed in a configuration file like this:

        configuration < modi: "window,drun,ssh,combi"; font: "hack 10"; combi-modi: "window,drun,ssh"; >@theme "solarized"

        To get a full list of options for config.rasi file run rofi -dump-config . You can write the output of the command directly to your configuration file while running rofi -dump-config > ~/.config/rofi/config.rasi

        Note: i3 users be aware that putting commas in the i3 configuration file can cause issues. To bind a key to launch rofi, either use a configuration file or replace the commas with # , e.g. rofi -combi-modi window#drun#ssh .

        Icons

        It is possible to use icons to display with their corresponding entries. Assuming you have papirus-icon-theme installed, with -show-icons and defining the icon theme with -icon-theme , you can have rofi display icons and do the following:

        $ rofi -combi-modi window,drun,ssh -theme solarized -font "hack 10" -show combi -icon-theme "Papirus" -show-icons

        The rofi-theme(5) man page contains extensive instructions on how to theme rofi, using a custom, CSS-like language. This page contains additional informations on the layout system used by rofi, the precise syntax used to theme rofi, as well as additional instructions to theme most of rofi’s properties. Rofi’s theme system can be simple (the default dmenu theme is around 30 lines of CSS) but is flexible enough to create various interactive, widget-like applets and menus, like rofi-advanced.

        Contributed themes

        Rofi comes with several official themes stored in /usr/share/rofi/themes , and more user themes can be found at the rofi-themes repository.

        Load up an official theme, or download a .rasi user theme and place it in ~/.config/rofi/example.rasi on the command line:

        $ rofi options -theme example

        Alternatively, in your configuration file outside of the configuration < >block:

        Tips and tricks

        Rofi as dmenu replacement

        If called as dmenu (via a symlink), rofi acts like dmenu. Then, programs that call dmenu from a script (like passmenu from pass) will use rofi instead of dmenu. The exact behavior of rofi in dmenu mode is described in rofi-dmenu(5) .

        To approximate the look of dmenu, copy the file /usr/share/rofi/themes/dmenu.rasi shipped by default in the rofi package to the rofi configuration directory (usually ~/.config/rofi ) and enable it by appending @theme dmenu at the end of config.rasi or with the -theme dmenu option on the command line.

        Execute shell commands from rofi

        If you want the ability to run shell commands or use your own scripts directly from rofi with seeing the output, then ensure following:

        Define -run-shell-command ‘ -e SHELL -ic » && read» where SHELL is your shell (e.g. bash, zsh). This allows you to enter the command on the inputbar followed by Shift+Enter . The terminal stays open until the next keypress.

        This is an example with the recommended escaping sequence for i3:

        bindsym $mod+d exec --no-startup-id rofi -show drun -run-shell-command ' -e zsh -ic " && read"'

        If you encounter rendering issues regarding emojis (rendering as rectangles for example), you should install ttf-symbola AUR , noto-fonts-cjk , and/or noto-fonts-emoji .

        Rofi as a power management menu

        Rofi can be used to perform power management operation with systemd. Install rofi-power-menu AUR . To launch it, you have to tell rofi where to find rofi-power-menu executable. For example, if the executable is in $HOME/.rofi-power-menu :

        $ rofi -show p -modi p:$HOME/.rofi-power-menu

        You can also put the executable in the PATH, and pass only its name.

        To show default symbols, you may need to install ttf-nerd-fonts-symbols .

        Rofi as a Clipboard Manager

        Rofi can be used as a X11 clipboard manager using Greenclip. Install the rofi-greenclip AUR package.
