Installing Samsung M2020 printer

Post by Deon58 » Wed May 03, 2017 11:41 am

I have searched and found some info but as I have very recently switched over to Mint I am at a bit of a loss.

I plug my printer in and it comes up as a printer but then says it is missing /usr/lib/cups/filter/rastertospl

I did see somewhere to copy it to the user directory but can’t copy and paste.

I would really appreciate some support starting with the premise that I know nothing

PS. I include screen-shots of messages

Installation:
Extract the package and go to the uld folder, where open Terminal and run

When the driver is installed, plug the printer cable off and on, so the printer should install automatically.

Many thanks for the reply. I downloaded and extracted driver. Went to uld and ran install.sh by double clicking on file name. It asked me if I wanted to run and sais yes. Plugged in printer and after saying installing new printer gave message no driver.

Am I missing something. Do I need to open a terminal window and type in an install command there?

I have always installed Samsung drivers via Terminal. The driver should be the right.

Did it ask you for your password ? If NO, then it didn’t work. You need superuser/root privilege to install the driver.

The sudo install.sh terminal command will do this, it will ask for your password.
When you type your password, nothing will show, no asterisks, no moving cursor, nothing! This is normal, just type your password and then hit the Enter key.

The command is not found because you are not in the right folder.
In your file manager, right-click on the ULD folder and then Open In Terminal. Now you are in the right folder, and you can enter

Mint 18.2 Cinnamon, Quad core AMD A8-3870 with Radeon HD Graphics 6550D, 8GB DDR3, Ralink RT2561/RT61 802.11g PCI
Linux Linx 2018

You are in the wrong directory . .
Open the File Manager and navigate to the folder where the install.sh file is located. Now right-click in an open area (in the right pane) and the Context menu that pops up, choose «Open terminal here» (or similarly worded). Then run that sudo command again.

so the Unified Linux Driver comes down as uld_v1.00.36_00.91.tar.gz from the site quoted earlier

so from the very beginning, if one opened a terminal and pasted in these commands, it should work . to paste into a terminal, right-click at the text prompt . flashing light and look for the PASTE option that should appear in the menu ..

tar -zxvf uld_v1.00.36_00.91.tar.gz

and when it asks you for your sudo password, then please enter it

seems like this ML-2020W is a newish printer; part of what Samsung call the Express range; http://www.samsung.com/us/computing/pri . 2020w-xaa/

___________
Samsung have made their ULD (unified linux driver) for quite a few years now; they have earned praise for providing a linux driver; some have quibbled with where their installer puts files; so some linux enthusiasts have supported this alternate site http://www.bchemnet.com/suldr/index.html .

ideally most older Samsung printers seem to auto-install; the driver that is in Synaptic called printer-driver-splix usually provides the support and Mint auto-installs the older printers
_____________

this 2020W has Google Cloud Print capabilities; so one can just print using that; one should not need to install drivers if that was the sole way of sending data to print; similarly using a mobile phone

Thank you every one for your great support. I was in wrong directory and by merely right clicking as you suggested and open terminal I am now happily printing. So I learn a little each day. Many thanks again

Thanks for the info in this thread. It enabled me to get my new Samsung M2020W printer on my new PC. Great simple instructions. Took some effort on my part, but knowledge is power and I found the driver and the terminal instructions to get everything up and working. THANKS again all who contributed, especially PD2. Maury
