recommend a softphone

Can someone recommend a softphone (an SIP softphone) and where I can get it from (ie. Synaptic Package Manager)?
I would like to be able to encrypt calls.
So far, I have tried Linphone and that didn’t work. I posted a separate thread for that here a few days ago:

One that I came across is Twinkle. But, the version in Synaptic Package Manager is from 2016 and so I was hoping to find a ppa that I can trust. But, not so sure that the exists.

Don’t use anything like this but here’s a sort of guide for softphones from the Ubuntu wikis . most Mint software comces from ubuntu repos . https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoftPhone
As to a ‘trusted’ ppa, a ppa may be trustworthy in terms of malware but that doesn’t mean I still trust them. ppa software is insuffiuciently tested, pretty much by definition, and tends to be a lot buggier. Often they are for newer or older Ubuntu versions and won’t install on your release (Mint 20.x is Ubuntu 20.04 based.
I use almost no ppas . one ppa for unetbootin on one machine I should yank because unetbootin isn ‘t useful for me, and zero in my main one, which I want to keep stable.
I’d try one of the programs in the above link from the standard repos, and be prepared to do more reading on the subject. I’m not so sure you’re going to find a simple GUI Lin ux solution for this

I just read your post and the good replies to it. Here are my thoughts on this as well.
It would help to know more about your system setup. If you run » inxi -Fxzd » and » lsusb » from the console terminal prompt, highlight the results, copy and paste them back here, that should provide enough information.
Linphone is supposed to be secure as long as you and the receiver you are calling is also using Linphone. I think to have secure communications will require both the caller and receiver using the same secure software.
Sip / Voip software (Softphone) software may require adding firewall rules if the firewall is enabled like it is supposed to be. You can test this by temporarily disabling the firewall to see if that will allow you to «add an identity» and make a good connection. There are easy to add «preconfigured» firewall rules for various software and or functions including sip / voip.
I have provided some links below on various Sip / Voip software that is currently available along with other links to secure and free multimedia messengers. Using a VPN provider’s server connection will add another layer of security.
Twinkle was popular for a while, but I do not see any current packages. You could try to compile it yourself after installing all the required dependencies.

There are also some really good secure FREE communication applications that do not require purchasing a SIP / Voip account just Internet access like Google Duo, Qtox, Jitsi (Jitsi Meet), Jami (aka Ring), etc.
If you want to be able to call regular phone numbers, then you will need to purchase and sign up for a Sip / Voip account with a provider.

Ekiga

Twinkle

Его автор Мишель де Боэр (Michel de Boer) включил в программу множество возможностей, включая интеграцию с KAddressBook, расширенную обработку звонков, настраиваемые уведомления, шифрование, передачу файлов и даже интерфейс командной строки. Также частично поддерживается оповещение о присутствии и простая адресная книга. К тому же Twinkle отличный VoIP-клиент, основанный на Qt.
Для установки Twinkle используйте пакет `twinkle` из репозитория `universe`.

SIP client for Mint?

I was looking in the Software Portal for a SIP client for Mint, but i’m surprised that there’s nothing at all listed.
Can we get one or two added?
e.g. Qutecom (Wengophone), Ekiga

I don’t personally use the Software Portal to install apps; I use Synaptic Package Manager or ‘apt-get’ from the CLI; but Ekiga is in the repos (in Mint ‘Gloria’). I use it nearly every day on my Voip account.

Are all your repos turned on in the Portal? What version of Mint are you running?
