If you use Skype, you don’t need an expensive conferencing service to show your friends or colleagues something on your screen. The original video-chat service has long supported a screen-sharing feature, provided you launch it from a desktop version of the app.

Instructions in the article apply to Skype on Windows 10, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS. Skype for Business is also addressed on the platforms where it’s available. Additionally, While Skype is available for web browsers, the Screen Share feature is not.

What to Know About How to Share a Screen on Skype

There’s one common requirement when you want to share your screen. You must be engaged in a voice call with your contact. You don’t need the sound, but it’s useful to explain what’s happening on the screen.

When you’re in a voice call, you can show someone what’s on your screen, though your sharing capabilities vary by platform:

  • Windows, macOS, and Linux: One person can share a screen with everyone on the call.
  • Android and iOS: You can take still snapshots, but not share the screen.

How to Share Screen on Skype for Windows, macOS, and Linux

Recent versions of Skype have come a long way to make the application consistent across desktop operating systems. When you’re connected to a call, Skype provides a one-click process to share your screen that’s similar across all platforms.

Share screen icon

  1. Select the Share screen icon in the lower-right corner of the screen.

If you have more than one monitor or display, select which one you’d like to share. Click Share Screen to start.

Confirm what’s being shared. Skype places a yellow border around the screen.

To stop sharing, either select the Share screen icon again or hang up the call.

How to Share Screen on Skype for Business for Windows and macOS

Skype for Business is Microsoft’s corporate version of Skype. It comes from their previous messenger called Lync. The process to share your screen is similar to the consumer version of Skype, as you need to be in a voice call, but the on-screen controls are slightly different.

  1. In a video call, select the Share Content icon at the bottom of the screen, second from the right.

Select Share your Desktop to share the entire desktop or select Share a Window to share a single window.

How to Share Snapshots on Skype for Android and iOS

Mobile devices can’t share live screencasts in calls, but these devices can share screenshots.

Screen sharing is the equivalent of video. If you’re on a mobile network, it uses your data rapidly. Unless you’re only text chatting while using Skype, access a Wi-Fi network to avoid overage charges.

  1. On iOS or Android, tap the Plus when you’re on a call. This tap displays the actions you can take during a call.

The Plus sign and Snapshot command in Skype

Tap Snapshot.

You may not notice it with the voice call taking up the full screen, but the chat indicator in the lower-left corner of the screen shows a new message. That’s where you’ll find the picture of your screen.

While you can’t send your screen to other callers, you can receive shared screens on a mobile device. It appears in the center of the screen but might be too small to be useful.

Troubleshoot Skype Screen Sharing

Like most high-throughput internet features, screen sharing doesn’t always work as planned. Here are some common problems and solutions:

  • If you start screen sharing and your callers report nothing appears, turn the feature off then back on again. This toggling is also the fix to a frozen screen, for example, when you move around the screen but callers report they don’t see any changes.
  • If starting and stopping the screen share doesn’t work, exit the call and then reconnect.
  • Screen sharing over the internet makes it subject to traffic spikes and other network barriers, meaning it’s not the best option to share something that requires a high quality of service. There’s not a fix for this one, only a caveat to not use Skype to stream, for example, a video game if you want to maintain high quality.

Where is skype share screen?

I share my screen every Sunday when my family and I have a Skype video call. When Ubuntu asked if I wanted to upgrade from 20 to 22, I hit OK and away we went. Except on Sunday, there was no screen sharing available on Skype. I wonder if it has to do with the changes they made to ‘print screen’ — when you used to hit the print screen key it would take a snapshot of the screen, but now it doesn’t.
Anyway, I asked on Skype and the reply I got was they asked if I had recently upgraded Ubuntu. So I thought I’d ask here. Thanks

Try using Xorg instead of Wayland. To do this log out and click your name to log back in. Before entering password, click on the gear icon and select the Xorg option.

I did that, great new information. I wish Skype had a way to test that out before you were on a call. That is, unless you are on a call the video screen isn’t there so I can’t see if I have a screen sharing option or not.

I will have to wait till tomorrow when I make my call to the family. I just wondered why the xorg changes the colors in firefox. usually the menubar and other things like that that surround the window, usually they are white, but now they are a pistachio green and firefox doesn’t have a setting to change that that i can find.

No, I use the stand alone slype. I just noticed that in firefox and everything else, the windows are bound with that green color. i didn’t see a way to change the settings in Ubuntu. Is there a way to change that? Someone had to tell Ubuntu to make the windows look like that.

Skype and screen sharing

Last time I decided to use Ubuntu 17.10. When I installed Skype from official site of Skype (I downloaded the .deb package) I can do almost everything without one important feature for me. I can’t share my screen while I am talking with somebody. On Windows that was working perfectly, on Ubuntu I don’t even see such a option. My friend has the same version of Ubuntu, GNOME and Skype. He can use that feature. I can’t and I can’t figure out why.

If you use Wayland (Ubuntu 17.10) and latest version (v8.11.0.4) of skypeforlinux screen sharing is not working.

In order to have screen sharing working you can switch to Xorg as explained here.

Otherwise you can use Google Hangout, where you can even share windows.

This is because ubuntu 17.10 switched from Xorg display server to wayland.(Why wayland). But many applications are yet to port to wayland. many of the existing applications do not work properly with wayland. Skype is also such a case.

To switch from wayland to Xorg (X11). Do the following

enter image description here

  • Log out from the current session
  • then select Ubuntu on Xorg from the login screen
  • Make sure you have an X11 Session by executing the following command in terminal. echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE

now your Skype screen sharing will work

How can I share my desktop using Skype?

I’m running Ubuntu Lucid Netbook Remix on my laptop and I need to be able to share my desktop for a Skype call. Does anyone know how to get this done?

When you are in a video call, you can share your desktop by click on the video button (as in the picture) then click share your screen>choose what to share.

alt text

With the latest version of Skype for Ubuntu, sharing your screen is activated differently.

In a call: hit the + button in the call window > Share screens

Right click on a contact name > Share your screen. > Share full screen or Share selection

With Skype 4.3.0.37 I have found that you — apart from finding the right menu item in Skype — also need to be on a connection with sufficient speed. Otherwise transmission will be very slow or freezes, as if congestion occurs.

When I was on my private fairly low-speed ASDL connection screen sharing did not work, but when I switched to a fast university connection there was no problem with Skype screen sharing from my Ubuntu Linux to a Windows computer.
