Likely works fine out of the box but test it yourself: boot the Live environment from USB or DVD and plug it in.

I did a quick search and it appears to work fine in Ubuntu 16.04 so you should be good in Mint 18.x which is 16.0 based. Don’t know about Mint 19 beta but new users should avoid beta releases anyway. They are virtually guaranteed to fail anyway at some point.
Most USB DACs will work fine in Linux but some features may not work. Basic operation of a USB DAC is quite standard with open IEC specs. As mentioned unless you haven’t bought one yet just test it in a USB stick live boot.

Thanks for the advice but could you explain why I should use a live environment? I’m a newbie. Even if it works in a live environment I would still have to get it to work on the installed os.

it depends on what you’re using the beta for and how. I’m a relatively new user too but I just installed the beta and despite the few bugs I discovered since yesterday, it still works a lot better than 18.3.

I assume(d) you were in possession of the hardware yet not (yet) a current Linux Mint system. In that sense, as catweazel said, «to test if it is supported before installing». If indeed this is the situation note that Linux comes bundled with most any driver available for it; that testing things from a Live environment is generally every bit as good as testing from an installed system; that you wouldn’t be installing additional drivers onto an installed system with Linux the same as you would with Windows.
It is however also possible that you are in possession of a current Linux Mint system yet not (yet) the hardware. In that case my suggestion is clearly N/A.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Linux Mint and its excellent forum!
I just read your post and the good replies to it. Here are my thoughts on this as well.
It would help to know more about your system setup. If you run » inxi -Fxzd » and » lsusb » from the console terminal prompt, highlight the results, copy and paste them back here, that should provide enough information.
FYI: There are some really nice graphical (GUI) programs for sound that start with «Qas», like the fantastic «Qasmixer», in the Software Manager or Synaptic Package Manager (SPM) that you can install and use. You may notice more options using QasMixer. Recommend installing «pulse audio volume control» as well.
Sound «Mixers» can be a little confusing if you are not familiar with them. If you bring up «Qasmixer» and make it fullscreen, on the right side you will have mixer devices where you can control your system sound. If you do not see the mixer devices, hit «F6». The mixer item «sysdefault» will show all installed sound card devices, and you will have various options to adjust various volume controls using «sliders» which you can turn off and on using the «dot» below the volume slider. There are also various other check boxes below that you can use, and depending upon your sound card(s) that sometimes includes headphone checkboxes and or sliders as well, like «Headphone Jack Sense».
The applications included are:
— qasconfig — browser for the alsa configuration tree
— qashctl — mixer for alsa’s high level control interface
— qasmixer — desktop mixer with features similar to alsamixer
Qasmixer is a desktop mixer application for alsa’s «simple mixer interface» and offers features similar to alsamixer. it also features a sytem tray icon with basic mixer functionality.
