Steam beta client linux

Nov 6, 2012 —Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises (such as Counter-Strike and Team Fortress) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today announced the launch of a limited access beta for its new Steam for Linux client.

The Steam for Linux Beta client supports the free-to-play game Team Fortress 2. Approximately two dozen additional Steam titles are now also available for play on Linux systems. Additionally, the Steam for Linux Beta client includes Big Picture, the mode of Steam designed for use with a TV and controller, also currently in beta.

“This is a huge milestone in the development of PC gaming,” according to Gabe Newell, Valve President and co-founder. “Steam users have been asking us to support gaming on Linux. We’re happy to bring rich forms of entertainment and our community of users to this open, customer-friendly platform.”

The Steam for Linux Beta client is currently available for installation on Ubuntu 12.04. “An overwhelming majority of beta applicants have reported they’re running the Ubuntu distro of Linux,” according to Frank Crockett, a member of the Steam for Linux team, “We intend to support additional popular distros in the future; we’ll prioritize development for these based on user feedback.”

Within its first week, Valve received over 60,000 responses to its request for participants in the Steam for Linux Beta. The first round of beta participants has been selected from this group of respondents.

The Steam for Linux Beta client will become available to a widening group of users over the course of the beta. Subsequent participants will be chosen among survey respondents, and once the team has seen a solid level of stability and performance across a variety of systems, the Steam for Linux client will become available to all users of Steam.

Steam is a leading platform for the delivery and management of PC and Mac games with over 50 million accounts around the world and over 2,000 titles offered.

Hardware and Software Requirements

Steam for Linux requires the following:

  • 1 GHz Pentium 4 or AMD Opteron with:
    • x86-64 (AMD64) instruction set
    • CMPXCHG16B instruction support ( cx16 in /proc/cpuinfo flags)
    • SSE3 instruction support ( pni in /proc/cpuinfo flags)

    Install Steam for Linux client:

    1. Download the steam_latest.deb package from this location.
    2. Open a graphical file manager (for Ubuntu 12.04, click the folder icon on the Unity Launch bar).
    3. Navigate to the directory containing steam_latest.deb and double-click it. This launches Ubuntu Software Center and installs the package.
    4. If you prefer to install from the command-line, use gdebi. Install the gdebi-core package ( apt install gdebi-core ) and then install the Steam for Linux package ( gdebi steam_latest.deb ).
    5. For a list of games supported by Steam for Linux either visit this page or click Store (from the client) and then the Linux tab on the far-right. We recommend that you join the Steam for Linux official game group, located here. You will find future beta announcements and other information posted here as well as an active discussion forum.

If you encounter an issue with Steam for Linux, first search the issue list to see if it has already been reported. Include closed issues in your search.

    • Source-based games (HL2:DM, HL2, HL2:EP1, HL2:EP2, TF2, DoD:S, CS:S), visit our Source Issue List
    • GoldSrc-based games (HL, HL:BS, HL:OF, TFC, DoD, DMC, CS, CS:CZ or Ricochet), visit our Half-Life Issue List
    • Portal 2, visit our Portal 2 Issue List
    • CS:GO, visit our CS:GO Issue List
    • Games using Proton, visit our Proton Issue List

If it has not been reported, create a new issue with the following information:

    • a short, descriptive title;
    • a detailed description of the issue, including any output from the command line;
    • steps for reproducing the issue; and
    • your system information.

Please place logs either in a code block (go here for a GFM cheat sheet) or a gist.

When possible, please include a differential between a working configuration and the reported issue.

If a crash is involved, please include any CrashIDs or minidumps related to the issue in an archive. Archives can be drag and dropped into the text box of github.

For tracking purposes, there should be one issue per issue report.

System information can be gathered from within steam ( Help -> System Information ).

Once your information appears: right-click within the dialog, choose Select All , right-click again, and then choose Copy . Paste this information into a gist and include a link to it from your bug report.

There are basic rules of conduct that should be followed at all times by everyone participating in the discussions. While this is generally a relaxed environment, please remember the following:

    • Do not insult, harass, or demean anyone.
    • Do not intentionally multi-post an issue.
    • Do not use ALL CAPS when creating an issue report.
    • Do not repeatedly update an open issue remarking that the issue persists.

Remember: Just because the issue you reported was reported here does not mean that it is an issue with Steam. Also, should your issue not be resolved immediately, it does not mean that a resolution is not being researched or tested. Patience is always appreciated.

So far, we have a delicious list of games that are supposed to work via Proton in the Steam Beta Client on Linux.

Alas the installs are not available and the client segfaults & crashes. 🙁

    vJill (Works at valve) says:

We’re looking into the settings crashes. Hold tight!

This is the glory of a first-hour release in a beta channel. Still stoked for this!

If you haven’t already, make sure you have your GPU drivers updated for when they release the fix. If you’re not on SteamOS, there are instructions in the announce. I know on Mint I had to update my Nvidia drivers manually.

Do you know if the specific driver version is required? I’ve updated to 396.54 and the readme on github specifies .51.

Though my issue isnt crashing, I cant even get an installer to pop up it just complains about ‘invalid platform’

Interesting, its reported as working for most other people with mesa 18.1.6. I assume you installed those drivers from the ppa listed in the readme I linked before? (Make sure to apt-get update after adding the ppa/before installing the driver if you’re on an ubuntu-based distro).

It is quite odd that this is not working. I did install all the files including the VR files (even though I dont use VR) and it is still not working. Not sure what to do. Perhaps its Ubuntu?

Not sure but it would be nice to get this working to test some games.

    I have tried several games

    Doom
    No Man’s Sky
    Elder Scrolls Online
    Fallout 4

Every one of these games gets to the «Preparing to Launch» box then crashes immediately and does not launch.

I am running Ubuntu 18.04 on 16 gigs or RAM, AMD Ryzen 5 1600X processor, Radeon RX 560 OC.

Is there any way that I can get at least DOOM working?

Double check you have the right driver versions stated in this readme https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/blob/proton_3.7/PREREQS.md

and verify game files, for one game I had to do this twice to make it work.

I have DOOM 2016 installed and it works As does S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl as well.
    I’m running Ubuntu MATE 18.04.1 32gb RAM on a 2700x with a 1080 (390.77 driver).

As an update: I reinstalled Ubuntu 18.04 and set up all amd drivers first to be current 18.30-633530 driver version. I installed all packages that are needed for Steam Play to work and even did ample sudo apt-get update runs with several restarts after everything is done.

I installed DOOM in Steam and verified integrity 2 times and still nothing.

Game crashes without start after seeing the «Preparing to Launch» Box

No DOOM took a bit to prep the install but it works and graphics are really sharp. I also enabled Vulkan in game which runs even better. The game even restarted on its own after enabling Vulkan support (in-game).
S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl also runs quite nicely as well.

To get attention. Try post your findings in the main post Discussions.

Does anyone know if its possible to specifically install the windows version of a linux native game? Arma 3 has a linux port but it’s actually a fork thats locked to a different version thus cutting you off from the entire playerbase of the game, and I can see no way to force Steam Play to install the windows version.

-Theoretically- you could install the windows version under wine steam, then close steam and copy the game directory and app manifest into your linux steam’s library. That said, I can’t guarantee it would work.

Tthe new Linux compatibility system isn’t quite working for me. Installed DOOM 2016, and it runs, but just a black screen. I can hear the menus respond but that’s it.

Xubuntu, i7-2600K, GTX 970 ( driver version 396.51). Dual monitors; the game starts on the primary monitor, the 1440p one. But just a black screen.

I’ve noticed that every game renders black when the window isnt focused. The solution for me has been to toggle focus a few times (clicking in and out of the screen, switching virtual desktop back and forth etc). Might not be your issue but it’s worth a shot.

I’m on Void Linux using nvidia driver 390.77. Doom works but had the same issue to start with.

To (hopefully) get Doom working for those having issue, go to set launch properties and put:
    +r_renderapi 1
that will launch the game in Vulkan mode. Fixed it for me.

The only other game I’ve tried so far is the Last Remnant and it works fine.
