Steam linux black screen

Problem started a week ago. Fixed by removing the entire steam folder and allowing to re-download. Problem has since resumed, cannot launch any games, even after deleting the steam folder. Konsole output as follows:

Blank screen sits, eventually have to force kill
Card is nvidia 570 running latest 325.08 drivers, however it seems to exist with all driver types.
Distro is Fedora 19

a quick update would confirm this is related to the steam in-game overlay. Disabling via «enable community in-game» does allow games to launch again. Would appreciate some feedback from some of the testers or devs on the issue.

I fixed this an hour ago by updating my graphics driver and client. It ran fine in «big picture mode» but didn’t render the store. I updated and it was fine.

with people having similar issues, but your best bet is to get the latest client. There’s apparently many ways to work around the client not updating.
I did update video and kernel and after that the client wouldn’t run. (facepalm)
The package steam-native-runtime has somehow disappeared from the system and the package steam won’t run without the native runtime. Native runtime is looking for a library that is not available in any mirror, so I just gave up and completely uninstalled steam.

maybe you just tried while distro repo mirrors where syncing? running updates at that precise moment sometimes has unexpected effects over apparently available packages
besides that, using steam-native-runtimes is a workaround, there are ways to fix steam without necessarily resorting to this, mentioned in other threads about the same issue

Valve update some library to fix an issue for people on arch which broke it for everyone else, opt into the beta to fix it

Looks like you were right — I had the bad luck to try updates while the mirror was syncing. Since last night I uninstalled Steam, now I installed it and trizen did find the package. Also, no more black screen. 😀
