• Steam client version (build number or date): steam-launcher 1.0.0.54
• Distribution (e.g. Ubuntu): Linux Mint 18.3 64-bit

Please describe your issue in as much detail as possible:

Expected:
Open steam with fonts rendering.

Actual:
The console repeats ../vgui_surfacelib/linuxfont.cpp (402) : Assertion Failed: Unable to find font named Arial same for a few other fonts DejaVu Sans , Marlett and Lucidia Console which lead to further errors (read linked log)
These fonts are present in Font Viewer and display correctly.

Couldn’t get a screenshot, but the context menu text from the applets panel in the bottom right is all squares.

Steps for reproducing this issue:

1. Download and install steam
2. Download Segoe UI and manually install the font
3. Force clear the font cache sudo fc-cache -frvE
4. Change from Noto to Segoe UI
5. Realize it doesnt work and change back to Noto fonts.
6. Install mscorefonts sudo apt-get install ttf-mscorefonts-installer
7. Restart
8. Run steam

This appears to have been an issue as long as steam-for-linux has been around; however, solutions such as upgrading the OS, installing every relevant font under the sun, installing fonts in ~/.fonts, installing fonts in steam’s fonts folder have all proved unfruitful. I cant even remember some of the other guides I have attempted. I’m really puzzled how the client isn’t able to access fonts that are clearly available to the OS.

Hey there,
I installed Steam via pacman (official package manager) on my Arch Linux x64.
A while ago it was just working as it should, since an update a while ago the font is broken.
I already tried uninstalling (‘pacman -Rnss steam;rm -r ~/.stea*;rm -r ~/.local/share/Steam’) and reinstalling (‘pacman -Syu steam’) but it didn’t help.
You can see the problem in the screenshots.
For some reason it looks like it’s just the latin chars being ♥♥♥♥ed up; I have some friends with kyrillic characters in their names which are shown as they should. Entered text also isn’t shown. The updater text is working btw.

I had a similar problem, the font displayed was the wrong one and some capitals letters, like «A» or «W» were cut in half.
According to the ArchLinux documentation, the fonts problems can be solved by installing Steam fonts and copy these to the right place.

These commands should do the trick :
— cd ~/.fonts/ (create the folder if it doesn’t exists)
— wget https://support.steampowered.com/downloads/1974-YFKL-4947/SteamFonts.zip
— unzip SteamFonts.zip && rm SteamFonts.zip

Maybe someone here at steam can help me out with that.
The problem is that steam dont show me any fonts like shown in the screen below:

purging -> reinstalling dont help
deleting the complete steam folder after purging also dont help
I have a very bad feeling im missing some essential font.

ms corefonts are installed:

sudo apt-get install ttf-mscorefonts-installer Reading package lists. Done Building dependency tree Reading state information. Done ttf-mscorefonts-installer is already the newest version

The image you showed only showed a steam loading screen (round thing in upper right indicating loading). Apparently no content had loaded yet. Try launching steam from a terminal window and see if any errors show in the terminal.

Note that if you have steam opened both in a web browser and steam client at the same time there may be some things you cannot do with both connected at same time.

PS: I posted this from steam client in 64-bit 14.04.

You might see that buttons, fonts are missing completely.

There are a bunch of error messages about:

Assertion Failed: Unable to find font namedArial

Assertion Failed: Unable to find font named Marlett

Assertion Failed: Unable to find font named DejaVu Sans

Assertion Failed: Unable to find font named Lucida Console

I tried to force a reinstall of mscorefonts:

sudo apt-get install —reinstall ttf-mscorefonts-installer Reading package lists. Done Building dependency tree Reading state information. Done 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 1 reinstalled, 0 to remove and 18 not upgraded. Need to get 0 B/27,8 kB of archives. After this operation, 0 B of additional disk space will be used. This results in the same problem.

I read somewhere that if you once installed ttf-mscorefonts-installer via ubuntu software center it might happen that the EULA isnt accepted correctly. How can i reset the EULA? Because even a reinstall of ttf-mscorefonts-installer brings up
