Command line utility to convert stl files to STEP (ISO 10303-21) files. The translation is a direct triangle to triangle conversion with a tolerance based merging of edges. stltostp translates without depending on 3rd party tools such as OpenCascade or FreeCAD.

Convert Your 3D Mesh/Model STEP Files to STL

Description

The STEP file format is a 3D format defined in 1994 and used to store 3D objects for use in Computer-aided design (CAD) applications. STEP files are text-based formatted files containing one instance per line.

Although STEP files are widely supported by most CAD applications the format does have its limitations, such as the necessity to read the complete file into memory in order to parse the contents and due to the text storage of information the files can be quite large.

Description

The STL file format has its roots in the 1980’s and is the native file format for 3D Systems stereolithography CAD software. The format defines a triangulated mesh with vertices and faces and is a popular format for sharing 3D printable model files.

There were several formats that attempted to extend the STL format namely SolidView and VisCAM whose formats included limited 15-bit color information for each mesh face which is often ignored by most modern 3D software. The STL format can be either Text or Binary, our tools will support both formats.

STL Notes

The standard STL file format does not support colored faces or vertices or texture information. The STL file generated by the tool will contain only raw mesh/triangle data by default which is perfect for 3D printing.

The tool also has an option to save the file to one of the non-standard formats that support colored faces such as VisCAM and SolidView which is perfect if you want to further process the STL in software which supports these formats.

As a result, STL files contain no scale information, and the units are arbitrary. How to convert a STL file to a STEP file?

The purpose of this tutorial is to convert a STL file to STEP in order to be able to simply edit a part on a CAD software.

Required software: Fusion 360

Fusion 360 software is available free of charge for non-commercial use at https://www.autodesk.com.

Conversion time: 5 minutes

We’ll start by launching Fusion 360, with version 2.0.6263

Once the software is launched, we will insert the STL in the fusion 360 workspace:

Now, we are going to make several manipulations in the tree structure in order to convert the meshbody into a volume that can be modified directly on Fusion or, in our case, on another CAD software.

In some cases the STL to be converted has too many facets, which will increase the conversion time or simply prevent it in its current state.

Further steps will then be necessary in order to perform the conversion. Further steps in the conversion :

1. Select the «MeshBody1».
2. Set to «Face Count»
3. Enter a value less than 10,000.
4. Then validate

Once the additional steps have been completed, perform the previous steps again. A new Body should appear in the tree as shown below:

From this new body we will be able to create a STEP.

You will now need to name your file, select the file type and the destination folder.

Your STL is now converted to STEP and editable on your favorite CAD software.
