System rescue cd usb linux

Downloading and burning

SystemRescue is provided as an ISO image file to be burned to a CD/DVD and will produce a bootable media. SystemRescue cannot be executed as part of your original operating system.

You can download the ISO image file with your favourite browser. If you have problems, download the file using wget which is often installed by default under Linux, or get a windows version of wget. Downloading using wget is easy. You just need to run the following command in a terminal (cmd.exe on windows)

wget -c address-of-the-iso-file

Once the file is downloaded, check that there was no error by comparing the checksum matches the one shows on the download page. You can run sha256sum on the iso file to get the checksum of your local copy amd make sure the file has not been corrupted.

Burning

You can burn the ISO image file with most burning software. Under Windows, you can right click on the ISO image in the explorer to find an contextual menu which offers to burn the ISO image to the DVD writer.

Under Linux, you can use graphical programs such as k3b, xfburn, brasero or command line programs such as wodim or xorriso.

Burning with wodim is easy. First, type wodim —devices in order to get the identifier for your device. Then, type the following to actually burn an iso image:

wodim dev=/dev/scXX -v systemrescue-x.y.z.iso
wodim dev=/dev/sr0 speed=8 -v systemrescue-x.y.z.iso

Installing on USB Memory Stick

Today installing on USB memory stick is often a good alternative to burning on optical media. See here for details.

SystemRescue

A Linux system rescue toolkit as a bootable removable device

SystemRescue is a Linux system rescue disk available as a bootable CD-ROM or USB stick for administrating or repairing your system and data after a crash. It aims to provide an easy way to carry out admin tasks on your computer, such as creating and editing the hard disk partitions.

It comes with a lot of software such as disk management tools (parted, partimage, fsarchiver, filesystem tools, . ), network administration programs and simple text editors . It can be used for both Linux and windows computers, and on desktops as well as servers.

This rescue system requires no installation as it can be booted from a CD/DVD drive, and USB stick, or from the network using PXE. But it can be installed on the hard disk if you wish. It comes with up to date kernels to provide support for recent hardware and also for all important file systems (ext2/ext3/ext4, xfs, btrfs, ntfs, reiserfs, vfat), as well as network filesystems (samba and nfs).

I have been happily using systemrescue 4.08 for years I decided to upgrade and make a rescue stick with a separate partition for my own use. I am working on a Mint-20.2 system on an HP Pavilion g4 laptop. I downloaded systemrescue-9.01-amd64.iso and two hash files and a sig file from the systemrescue site. I checked the two hash numbers and the signature, all OK. I followed the directions in the «Installing systemrescue on a usb stick» page, under «Manual installation on Linux for booting in UEFI mode». The USB stick is 4G. I used gparted to create a MSDOS MBR. I created the first partition as 2G, FAT32, label=RESCUE901. I set the boot and lba flags. I created a second partition, the rest of the drive, ext4, label=RESCUEWORK. I opened systemrescue-9.01-amd64.iso using «Disk Image Mounter». I selected everything in the root directory (six directories) and dragged them into the root of the stick. I ejected the stick, then tried to boot it. The boot process hung with a blinking cursor in the upper left corner of a blank screen. By the way, I used usbimager to create the same physical USB stick and it works fine. It’s a pity the IOS partition consumes all of the stick. If it left room for a second partition the problem would be solved. I thought maybe gparted could shrink the ISO partition, but it does not not me try. I am stuck at this point. Anyone now what I have to do?

The current 64-bit versions, 8.0x, do not fit on a CD. «It is highly recommended to use the 64bit version (amd64)», they say, but when something calls itself System Rescue *CD* it is sloppy to build an ISO that can not be used on CD. That really does not inspire confidence.

As Karl Maulden used to say, «Don’t leave home without it.» So I follow Karl’s advice and keep a USB stick (and a CDROM) copy of SystemRescueCd in my car at all times. That way, whenever I find a computer for sale at a yard sale or in a store, I can use the copy to quickly assess its working condition and its internals (drives, video, BIOS, etc.) before purchasing a «cat-in-the-bag.» It saves time and MONEY.

System-Rescue-USB

System Rescue USB is a modified Arch Linux live cd. It is build as a rescue tool. I was looking for a Live CD to install Arch Linux. I found system-rescue-cd.org, but I wasn’t satisfied with the system. I decided to build my own customized version, after I realized how easy it is to compile and customize your own Arch Linux iso.

It is configured to boot into a LXDE desktop using an unprivilged user. You can use sudo to get root priviges. It uses fish as default shell. tmux is configured with mouse support. I have no plans to keep the iso small.

Burning to a CD/DVD in Windows

In Windows 7 and later, support for burning an ISO to DVD is built-in. Simply right click on the on .iso file and select «Burn disk image». This will bring up a series of dialogues to walk you through the process.

For Windows Vista or older versions of Windows you will need to download 3rd party software. Several free software burner applications are available for Windows. One such tool is DeepBurner. The portable version can be downloaded from here.

Writing to a USB Stick in Linux

This section describes how to write a Linux ISO file to USB.

Using a Burning Application

ImageWriter ImageWriter should be available for installation from your distribution’s Software Center / Software Manager / Package Manager / repositories. Once Imagewriter has been downloaded and installed, ensure that your USB stick is plugged in before starting it.

A brief guide to writing the Manjaro .ISO image has been provided:

  1. Click on the centre icon
  2. Navigate to where the ISO image has been saved and select it
  3. Ensure that your USB device has been selected from the drop-down menu
  4. Click on the Write button
  5. After the Write process has finished, reboot your system

To burn the iso on an usb stick, enter the following command in a terminal :

sudo dd bs=4M if=/path/to/manjaro.iso of=/dev/sd[drive letter] status=progress oflag=sync

Where [drive letter] is the letter of your removable device. Please note that it is the device (e.g. /dev/sdb), and not the partition number (e.g. /dev/sdb1).

To find which drive letter it might be write:

Writing to a USB Stick in Windows using Rufus

Rufus is a utility that helps format and create bootable USB flash drives, such as USB keys/pendrives, memory sticks, etc.

When you use Rufus to write a Manjaro Live ISO to USB you must select DD mode when prompted to use standard or DD mode.

See its website for more details: 1

The main purpose of the Live CD is to rescue data.

How to create and modifiy an iso

This only works on arch based Linux ditributions.
