Telegram System Tray Icons

Custom systray icons for Telegram to fit the style of GNOME Shell when using KStatusNotifierItem/AppIndicator Support extension, although it should work with TopIcons as well.

The Roboto font family is licensed under a Apache 2.0 license.

Icon	Meaning
	Idle (no unread messages)
	Unread messages
	Unread messages (muted chat)

Right now only up to 100 unread messages support is implemented. If the icon «number» does not exist, it is automatically generated (with the default Telegram style).

Simple, you just run the script from the root of the source folder:

Alternatively, you can just move the ticons folder to ~/.local/share/TelegramDesktop/tdata . You can just delete or backup the old folder.

As I have mentioned earlier, the icons cover 1000 unread message only. If the message out of custom icon number, it will be automatically generated with default Telegram style.

Telegram system tray icon appears black in Kubuntu 20.04

As the title says telegram system tray icon is hardly visible. All appearance settings are on default. But when I change Colors from Breeze to Breeze Dark it gets fixed. The problem is that I like Breeze colors and I do not want to change it. Additionally, I noticed the problem is with /usr/share/color-schemes/Breeze.colors because when I change ForegroundNormal=35,38,39 from [Colors:Window] tag to ForegroundNormal=239,240,241 that is the value used in BreezeDark.colors the icon is changed to white but I get other color problems. Now looking for a solution. Also I tried replacing all Telegram icons in /usr/share/icons/breeze/status/22 and /usr/share/icons/breeze/status/24 by /usr/share/icons/breeze-dark/status/22 and /usr/share/icons/breeze-dark/status/24 and nothing changed.

In System Settings > Global Theme the Breeze option shows the panel with a near white background and items in the system tray, including the Telegram icon are black or outlined in black. The opposite holds for the Breeze Dark option. The problem seems to be with the Kubuntu option. There, the panel background is dark, and all system tray components are white except the Telegram icon which is dark. I suggest you avoid the Kubuntu Global theme.

Replacement Telegram Tray Icons for GNOME Shell

So did I — and found a super easy ‘tweak’ to do exactly that.

This will only work if you use the Telegram desktop app on GNOME Shell with the awesome GNOME Indicator Applet extension or TopIcons Plus.

By default the Telegram tray icon uses a coloured tray icon (see top screenshot).

While this is ‘brand consistent’ the icon does makes the chat app stand out in the GNOME top bar as most top bar icons have a plain white-ish icon.

To make Telegram tray icons match the rest of the GNOME top bar icons all you need to do is replace them with alternatives icons.

Github user aldomann has already created a set of replacement Telegram tray icons which you can use.

Just download them from Github (lazy link), extract the Zip, then copy the ‘ticons’ folder to your clipboard.

Next, go to the hidden ~/.TelegramDesktop/tdata directory in your Home folder and replace the ‘ ticons ‘ folder located inside with the one you can copied earlier.

If you think you’ll want to revert to the color icons at some point you should backup or rename the ticons folder before copying.

Finally, restart Telegram to enjoy your unified top bar icons.
