I cannot comment on the «different methods», which you had used, and on why «none of it worked», because there is no hint what precisely you did and what precisely failed.

The easiest method of installing the torbrowser would be by getting it from the official Ubuntu software repositories.
This is true for Linux Mint 19.1 32-bit as well.
The terminal commands to do so would be:

sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install torbrowser-launcher
Tor Browser Launcher is intended to make the Tor Browser Bundle (TBB) easier to maintain and use for GNU/Linux users. torbrowser-launcher handles downloading the most recent version of TBB for you, in your language and for your architecture. It also adds a "Tor Browser" application launcher to your operating system's menu. When you first launch Tor Browser Launcher, it will download TBB from https://www.torproject.org/ and extract it to ~/.local/share/torbrowser, and then execute it. Cache and configuration files will be stored in ~/.cache/torbrowser and ~/.config/torbrowser. Each subsequent execution after installation will simply launch the most recent TBB, which is updated using Tor Browser's own update feature.

Reason: corrected commandline to install torbrowser-launcher to include the word «install»: sudo apt-get install torbrowser-launcher

This is the corrected install command for installing TorBrowser from the Linux Mint repositories

sudo apt-get install torbrowser-launcher

You can also just go to the Tor Browser downloads and download the Linux 32-bit archive file, right-click and extract here, browse into their folder, and into the browser subfolder and double-click «start-tor-browser» file. You can copy the «start-tor-browser.desktop» file into your Home folder desktop folder to create a desktop launcher shortcut icon.

Sorry for my mistake. Have corrected the sudo apt-get install torbrowser-launcher commandline to include the keyword «install», after having noticed phd21 had to post the correct commandline.

Hope the corrected commandline will work.
Yet, I am not sure it will, because the error messages which you posted mention several temporary problems resolving server names. And one the affected servers was the deb.torproject.org.
As long as connecting to deb.toproject.org fails, because the name cannot be resolved into an IP address fetching the torbrowser will fail.

In case you try again and there are no error messages that server names cannot be resolved, then the 2 (corrected) commandlines should work.

sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install torbrowser-launcher

Curious to learn about success or defeat .

I downloaded 64 bit version tonight, for my new install of LM. It wouldn’t do anything. Will try bash tomorrow

xenopeek wrote: ⤴ Tue Aug 06, 2019 2:22 pm I think the problem is Tor Browser comes with a self-modifying desktop launcher file. Perhaps that is what is new, and not Linux Mint 19.2. It sounds scary but looks harmless:

#!/usr/bin/env ./Browser/execdesktop # # This file is a self-modifying .desktop file that can be run from the shell. # It preserves arguments and environment for the start-tor-browser script. # # Run './start-tor-browser.desktop --help' to display the full set of options. # # When invoked from the shell, this file must always be in a Tor Browser root # directory. When run from the file manager or desktop GUI, it is relocatable. # # After first invocation, it will update itself with the absolute path to the # current TBB location, to support relocation of this .desktop file for GUI # invocation. You can also add Tor Browser to your desktop's application menu # by running './start-tor-browser.desktop --register-app' # # If you use --register-app, and then relocate your TBB directory, Tor Browser # will no longer launch from your desktop's app launcher/dock. However, if you # re-run --register-app from inside that new directory, the script # will correct the absolute paths and re-register itself. # # This file will also still function if the path changes when TBB is used as a # portable app, so long as it is run directly from that new directory, either # via the shell or via the file manager. [Desktop Entry] Type=Application Name=Tor Browser Setup GenericName=Web Browser Comment=Tor Browser is +1 for privacy and -1 for mass surveillance Categories=Network;WebBrowser;Security; Exec=sh -c '"$(dirname "$*")"/Browser/start-tor-browser --detach || ([ ! -x "$(dirname "$*")"/Browser/start-tor-browser ] && "$(dirname "$*")"/start-tor-browser --detach)' dummy %k X-TorBrowser-ExecShell=./Browser/start-tor-browser --detach Icon=web-browser StartupWMClass=Tor Browser
  1. Download the .tar.gz file for Linux from here https://www.torproject.org/download/, saved it to disk.
  2. After download completes, right-clicked that file in my file manager and select to extract it here.
  3. Go into the extracted tor-browser_en-US directory. The Tor Browser Setup file in this directory doesn’t yet do anything when you double-click it, ignore it. Instead, right-click on an empty spot inside the directory and select open in terminal.
  4. On the terminal run this command:
    ./start-tor-browser.desktop
  5. It takes a few seconds but the Tor Browser start screen will appear. You now find a Tor Browser file in the extracted tor-browser_en-US directory that you can just double-click to run Tor Browser in the future.
  6. If you have the extracted tor-browser_en-US directory in a location where you intend to keep it, you can instead run this command on the terminal to also add a Tor Browser launcher to your menu:
    ./start-tor-browser.desktop —register-app
