Linux Mint vs Ubuntu Mate, which one should I choose and why?

Post by j2ee » Sat Jun 29, 2019 7:04 am

I will install a Linux OS in an old laptop, here is the laptop spec:
Thinkpad T60
2GB ram
ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 (128 MB)

Because there are only 2GB so I wouldn’t choose Ubuntu. I have tried Linux Mint and Ubuntu Mate and I feel they are pretty similar. Which one should I try and why? Thanks!

Ubuntu Mate is a specific flavour of Ubuntu, so it seems you have already answered your own question. I think that either one would work and it’s a matter of taste and preference.

On a T60 with 2Gb of ram, I would go with Linux Mint Mate. I have a T60 with 3Gb of ram running Mint Mate 19.1, not a speed demon but acceptable.

I have both ubuntu mate and mint mate, on this PC. I haven’t actually timed it, but I’m fairly sure mint mate is faster, both to boot up, and start firefox and thunderbird.

You should try both for a while.

I have not used Mate before and when back in November I tested them, it turned out that Ubuntu was crashing a lot (the menu, the panel etc) while Mint was very stable(still is) although it was on top of an older Ubuntu base. Clem is one of Mate developers and perhaps, knows his way around better than folks around Ubuntu Mate.

Linux Mint seem like is designed for «People come from Windows with zero IT knowledge». It would look more «pro» by using other Linux distro?

Do you care for appearances only or do you prefer something stable yet usable? These «pro» distros (I mean cutting edge like Arch or Fedora) won’t give you nothing more or better than Mint unless, you have the very latest hardware so you don’t have much choice but go that way.

That is a matter of personal taste. I am not into fancy effects or eye candy and liked the WinXP/Win7/Gnome2 style desktop, so I picked Mate. One of the reason that I changed to Mint was Ubuntu adoption of the Gnome3 desktop and Mint usage of the Gnome2 desktop. Mate also requires a bit less resources than Cinnamon.

Mint was designed for easy transition for Windows user. As far as designed for «People come from Windows with zero IT knowledge», that is debatable. There are a lot of utilities with GUI but you can as they say «get your hand dirty» and use CLI like any other distro.

Not sure what you mean by more «pro», unless you mean distro like Arch which requires much more Linux knowledge.

I work in IT field but didn’t get used to Linux environment. I am worry if I tell others that I use Linux MinT then it sounds bad. Ubuntu Mate sound like more geek.

What would be the key deciding factors for me to decide whether to install Ubuntu Mate or Linux Mint Mate?

MATE is a desktop environment. It can be installed on various Linux-based operating systems. Ubuntu MATE is an Ubuntu flavor using the MATE desktop environment. Linux Mint is available in multiple variants, each with a specific desktop environment; the most widely used are Linux Mint Cinnamon and Linux Mint MATE. To decide, choose between more widely available support (where Ubuntu wins, but most of the knowledge about Ubuntu applies to Mint too) and somewhat better out of the box experience (where it is said that Linux Mint wins).

@AlexP I understand that MATE is a desktop environment. Also from what I understand Linux Mint is derived from Ubuntu. So hence my question since Linux Mint MATE is derived from Ubuntu with the MATE DE what is the difference from Ubuntu MATE in terms of system resource requirements, available applications, support, etc.

Linux Mint MATE is not Ubuntu with the MATE desktop environment, it’s Linux Mint with the MATE desktop environment. Mint is based on Ubuntu, and Ubuntu is based on Debian. Hence most knowledge about Debian also applies to Ubuntu and Mint, and most knowledge about Ubuntu also applies to Mint. Mint makes a great effort to «just work» out of the box. There is very little difference between resource consumption between Ubuntu 16.04 and Mint. All (or almost all) applications available on one are also available on the other. Some default apps are different, some default fonts are different, etc.

That’s indeed a totally different question. The first one was borderline off-topic, but this one shouldn’t be. If I were you, I’d roll back my edit and ask a new questions instead of trying to fit a totally new question into an existing question. For your information: the system here doesn’t advertise when a question gets radically changed. Just ask a new one. It’s not like you’re being charged more if you click /ask question 😉 🙂

Everything else is straight Ubuntu, from the Ubuntu mirror set.

Basically it comes down to default config, artwork, etc.

A Mint 18.x desktop looks better on first boot than an Ubuntu 16.04 desktop, even with MATE installed on the Ubuntu system.
