How Do I Delete Timeshift Files
Post by loybanks » Sat Aug 13, 2022 12:01 am
I have several Timeshift files on my main machine and would like to delete them. So how might I go about deleting the files thru the file manager? Or is there some other way to delete them? A couple of the files are Timeshift backups that were not completed successfully. Thanks

Delete them through Timeshift — select the snapshot(s) you want to delete and press the Delete button on the Title Bar.

From this post and your other post I can only assume you may have Timeshift setup incorrectly. May we get information on how you set it up?

# sudo touch /etc/timeshift.json
should create the file that the upgrade check looks for to validate timeshift is installed. I’m not sure why mine wasn’t at the expected location, but it wasn’t and this quick fix got past the error.

If the issue is disk space, another option is to save the snapshot to a USB flash drive. Not important if you intend to do regular install if upgrade doesn’t work (and sometimes it doesn’t), but a really good idea if you would rather revert than do a fresh install.
Notice this is a thread from 2018 and the OP only ever had one post (this one).

In 2022, upgrading to Mint 21, you can skip timeshift checks in the preferences menu of the Mint Upgrade Tool. Just click on the hamburger menu on the top right.

This is the answer that wins the day, in my opinion. This is how I would do it.
Of course, when the topic was started that option did not exist yet. which goes to show how confusing it is if we revive old topics, so i’ll close this one now.
If your issue is solved, kindly indicate that by editing the first post in the topic, and adding [SOLVED] to the title. Thanks!

Remove Timeshift? [Solved]
Post by feffer » Thu Mar 19, 2020 4:05 pm
I have been using a set of backup scripts for a few years and am satisfied with them. It seems that now one is directed to install Timeshift with Mint 19. I did that, but it does take a lot of disk space and seems redundant (for me). Frankly, I set up my linux partitions several years ago and went with 20-25 GB ones for the OS with a separate data partition. Timeshift on my box takes up 11 GB. so my partition is getting full. As I see it, my solutions are: 1. Enlarge my partitions. not very practical on my limited SSD; 2. Move the Timeshift directory to my data HD, or 3. Delete Timeshift and just use my existing backup system. I’m tending towards #3
Any real downsides to that? My existing backup keeps all the system files just as TS does. If I do delete Timeshift, how is that done. I suspect just deleting the directory and the app will not be enough.

I removed Timeshift and had no problems. If I remember correctly all I did was remove and purge the timeshift package and you don’t need to do anything else.

If you point TS at your data drive (if it is EXT4), then if and when in the future you decide you don’t need it any further, why not get rid of it then.
It is best to put snapshots on a different drive than your system drive anyway.
If you only use it once, given how easy it is to restore a system, it will have been worth a few GB.

The backup script I’ve been using for several years incorporates rsync and fsarchiver. Rsync is well known and used by TS and other backups. Fsarchiver is not so well known, but it works great to create a «whole» system backup. It is not an «image» but essentially saves and restores an entire OS. The one caveat is that it must be run from a booted OS on a non-booted one, so one must have at least 2 linux systems installed. Either that or run from a removable disk (not as convenient). I have several times restored entire systems successfully, so it is well tested. Does not work on Windows, however. I’m fine with my backup system, so I don’t need TS. Also, I have several linux installations on multiple machines. They all back up to a dedicated Server. TS seems like a fine system backup for a simpler machine or two, but I don’t think it will be useful in my case.
