Hi juanfer1969, and welcome to the forum.

What exactly are you trying to do? Are you simply trying to get the sound working?

Let’s get a look at your sound setup with this command:

curl https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/pulseaudio/pulseaudio/raw/master/src/utils/pa-info?inline=false | bash | nc termbin.com 9999

The sound settings only offer basic functionality for most. The types of things you want to control requires either editing /etc/pulse/daemon.conf, or adding your own ~/.asoundrc file. You’ll probably need to search the web for ideas on the ~/.asoundrc file as it’s not something I use, and it often creates troubles for people that do attempt to make such a file.

I saw you were using Qasmixer. There are some checkboxes underneath the main window that might improve things.

And you’re using S/PDIF output. What is it connecting to? If it’s a surround sound setup, there are some hacks to get surround instead of stereo that work for some people.

AFAIK Topping DACs are Linux compatible, not sure you need to configure anything special. But what is the exact model? Is it working? What ‘necessary programs» are you talking about?

As far as config goes, you don’t need anything like WIndows Wasapi or ASIO drivers because, contrary to what a lot of users seem to think, ALSA and PulseAudio do NOT resample audio by default unless you’re trying to play multiple audio sources at the same time. WHich is something I try to avoid.

You can test this easily yourself. PLay some audio file you know the sample rate for (use mediainfo-guii on the file if you don’t know). Then execute this in the terminal while it’s playing:

cat /proc/asound/card?/stream0 | grep Momentary

Then do the same thing with another sudio file that uses a different sample rate. I’ve done this a bunch of times and it’s never resampled. Try it.

thank you Hoser Rob, the model is Topping D10s, and it is working nice, configuracion process was easy, the system recognized it, and play files, the point is, when playing 48 pcm or higher, the dac screen only shows 44.1pcm, I tred the way you showed me, playing a 24 bit 96 kHz track and the momentary freq was 48000 Hz instead of 96000 Hz, tried all options in the audi options in the player(clementine). I play this trac in other pc runing windows and teh DAC screen shows 96.0 pcm

See if changes to /etc/pulse/daemon.conf helps. In the terminal run xed admin:///etc/pulse/daemon.conf and when the file opens change this section:

; default-sample-format = s16le ; default-sample-rate = 44100 ; alternate-sample-rate = 48000 ; default-sample-channels = 2 ; default-channel-map = front-left,front-right
default-sample-format = s24le default-sample-rate = 96000 alternate-sample-rate = 44100 ; default-sample-channels = 2 ; default-channel-map = front-left,front-right

Thank you very much MrEen, it worked , however, it could be possible write some lines in daemon.cfg to choose differents sample rates? anyway, thank you very much for your help and your time

You can’t really choose them per se. You can set the sample-rate as high as your card will allow, and any sources at that rate will play as such. If the card can handle 192000, you can go ahead and set that as the default.

I only use built-in audio, so I’m no expert on advanced audio stuff. Hopefully that page will help guide you to the optimal setup for your hardware.

Thread: USB DAC not recognized

USB DAC not recognized

Hi, I am running Kubuntu 13.10 (64 bit), and I’m trying to get an NAD USB DAC working.

By running the command «lsusb» in the terminal with and without the DAC connected, I found that the DAC is listed as:
Bus 004 Device 003: ID 17ae : 0004

Do anyone have suggestions to what I should try to get this DAC working? There is a Windows driver available for this, I assume this won’t be of any help.

Thread moved to Multimedia & Video.

You might have more luck here.

I have subscribed to this thread and will watch with interest as, though I can’t really help you, I am currently asking similar questions about a Digidesign Mbox 2 Mini on another thread. Good luck.

Re: USB DAC not recognized

I did some more research and found this at NAD’s webpage:

Minimum Mac OS X Snow Leopard (version 10.6) and later versions include USB Audio 2.0 drivers and therefore it is not necessary to install the NAD USB 2.0 Audio driver. Ensure the Sound device of your Mac is set to «NAD USB Audio 2.0»

Perhaps this might be useful to solve this problem. From what I know, osx is unix based, so perhaps the same driver is made for ubuntu? I have not been able to find this driver, but I’m not experienced in looking for linux drivers.
If there is no linux driver available, I think the osx driver should be more similar to what I need than the windows driver, and I might attempt to adapt this driver if necessary to get this working.

Re: USB DAC not recognized

Windows or Mac drivers are of no help.

The best place to ask if the kernel supports this device is here: https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/alsa-user

Re: USB DAC not recognized

The device is a NAD MDC DAC 2 ( http://nadelectronics.com/products/h. ules/MDC-DAC-2 ).
I will try to ask at alsa about the kernel support, if I have to go deep into the problem to solve this, then it will probably be some time until I have enough free time.

Re: USB DAC not recognized

I was able to get the device working

By looking closer in the console, I discovered that the command «~$ cat /proc/asound/cards» returns

0 [XFi ]: SB-XFi — Creative X-Fi
Creative X-Fi 20K1 SB073x
1 [Audio ]: USB-Audio — NAD USB Audio
NAD Electronics NAD USB Audio at usb-0000:00:1a.1-1, full speed

This made me believe that the problem might not be a driver, «lsubs -t» reveals that the device uses the driver «snd-usb-audio». This made me search for problems related to configuring a sound device instead, I found that «pactl stat» returns another unit as default sink, «pactl list sinks» returns a list of devices that include the one I want to use, so using «pacmd set-default-sink» I was able to change to the correct device.

This was sufficient to get the device working, but it still does not show up in the audio hardware setup.

Thanks for all help on this problem!
