SOlved Has anyone had luck using a USB to VGA adapter for external monitor?

Post by jwstarr » Mon Oct 19, 2020 2:35 am

I am trying to get a second external monitor to work on my ASPIRE 5 . In my understanding my USBC 3.2 GEN1 doesn’t have video. (I bought a USBC to HDMI cable and it does nothing. The only viable options I’ve been able to find are via some version of Display Link or USB to VGA adapter. I’ve seen it mentioned that some of these devices work — I am assuming that the USBC hubs I see will be limited by the same issue as the cable. I’m looking for some low cost way to add a monitor — it has to have a different feed from the HDMI monitor. Thanks alot!

USB to VGA adapters that work with Linux??

I’m needing a 3rd monitor to have more apps up and running at the same time.
Since I’m only dealing with desktop apps and not gaming a USB solution would be ideal.
So far I have not found one that had linux support. All appear to be a bit sketchy on linux.

Anyone use one of these adapters on Linux??

No, but I’ve used several in a work environment on Windows. The place I work has a few people using various ones for multi-screen displays for business monitoring applications. So we have a few different brands in use. The HP one that I’ve purchased a couple of times doesn’t seem to have a Linux driver, but this one from Unitek does.

The USB adapters are a pretty sketchy solution, can’t you pick up a nice cheap second hand GT610 or something?

The Matrox DualHead or TripleHead might work for you. It’s not USB — it connects to the system’s video out. The device tells the computer that you’re running an ultra wide display (3840 x 1080 for example) and then separates the video signal to each display connected. Since it’s a hardware solution it is as fast as your GPU (and even integrated graphics would be faster than USB) and should be OS agnostic for your Linux needs without the overall glitchyness of the USB devices.

Edit: looks like it needs to be set up under Windows, but after that it is good with Linux https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1744124

Been doing some digging and there is Ubuntu support for USB-VGA adapters based on the DisplayLink chip. I expect some latency but this is 2D desktop stuff; I just need to montor some apps that track phone system status, etc. The DisplayLink sites mentions support only for certain versions of their chips though. A lot of the ones you find at a reasonable price (less than 50 bux) are unsupported versions.

I would rather go this direction instead of getting in the middle of buying an expensive video card and HOPE there is good support for it on Linux.

A GT610 or equivalent is probably worth not much more than a decent USB > VGA adapter. I ran a GT610 for quite some time when I set up my first Linux PC, they’re a little cracker of a card! I used to game on it using a 1366 x 768 monitor just fine.

usb to vga adapter

I’m running on 10.10 and planning on getting an usb -> vga adapter for my monitor. I’ve read some threads where many people seem to have troubles . But all these threads are out of date!

so my question is:
does anyone know which usb-vga adapter works on 10.10? (or what you have to do to get a specific adapter working)

Re: usb to vga adapter

One thing to bear in mind, is that USB>VGA adapters do not use your video card. They replace it.

1. You have almost no chance of any kind of hardware acceleration. You will not be using this for games, and compiz may not even function. You’ll only be able to use it for things your CPU can handle with absolutely no help from the GPU.

2. Because they have their own internal GPU, a lot of people have had a LOT of driver issues.

If you don’t mind my asking, what are you trying to accomplish with the usb-vga? Even in a windows environment, they’re not very popular, and I’m not aware of anything they do that can’t be done another way. Even wireless can be done without them, although wireless HDMI is still in it’s infancy.

Re: usb to vga adapter

Since I do a lot of programming and don’t have/want a desktop-pc, I want to use my laptop with 2 external monitors + additional equipment (keyboard, . )
But my laptop has only a 1 vga-port! so my idea was to use a vga adapter so i can use a second external monitor as well.

What do you think would be the best way to accomplish that?

Re: usb to vga adapter

First of all, I’d suggest adjusting your work-flow so you don’t need 3 monitors.

Seriously though, I have a few suggestions. I’ve checked all the vednors I trust, and I’m sure you searched google for the same terms I did. USB display adapters are either not supported, poorly supported, or poor quality.

A FULLY POWERED USB HUB. Seriously, fully powered is not going to be optional. Spend some extra money for a good one. Go for 7 port or larger.

Good quality full size keyboard and mouse that connect USB

A small form factor USB display along the lines of one of these — http://www.thinkgeek.com/computing/usb-gadgets/bfa3/ Last I looked, there was some rudimentary linux support. Not for the feint of heart.

That would give you a full size display, your laptop display, and a small side-display. Using the fully powered hub and the laptop stand means you can have your entire desktop set up and rocking, and all you have to do is plug in the display cable and a signle USB port.

If you get one of the mini-displays, and get it working well (good luck) then you could skip the full size display, and get several of the mini displays.
