Veeam backup and replication linux server

Veeam Agent for Linux FREE

Backing up and recovering Linux Instances — whether they’re on premises or in the cloud — is often cumbersome, expensive and requires manual intervention and consumes an IT administrator’s valuable time.

The NEW Veeam® Agent for Linux FREE is a simple backup agent that’s designed to ensure the Availability of your Linux Instances, regardless of if they’re deployed in the public cloud or on premises.

FREE Linux Backup for Public Cloud and Physical Workloads

Veeam Agent for Linux FREE is a solution that can perform image-based backups from inside the guest system, both at the file level and volume level. True incremental backup is enabled using Veeam’s kernel module changed block tracking (CBT) functionality. And, the best part is that this module is distributed as source code!

Backup capabilities

  • Entire computer backup: Backup entire Linux systems while
    automatically excluding unnecessary files.
  • Volume-level backup: Use block-level backups for selected drives or
    volumes on your computer.
  • File-level: Choose individual file masks and folders to back up.
  • Built-in snapshot and CBT drivers: Get true incremental Linux backups enabled by Veeam’s kernel module with built-in volume snapshot capabilities and proprietary CBT capabilities.
  • Active full backups 1 : Meet your company’s backup policies by scheduling periodic active full Linux backups as needed.

Recovery options

  • Bare-metal restore: Restore your entire system to the same or different hardware.
  • Volume-level restore: Restore a failed hard drive or corrupted partition.
  • File-level restore: Restore individual files from any backup type in minutes!
  • Bootable recovery media: Create a recovery image of your Linux system on several different kinds of media and use it for volume or file-level restores.

More Backup and Recovery Options

Veeam Agent for Linux FREE enables fast recovery for your Linux Instances, which translates into increased uptime. Perform on-premises restores from backups of individual Linux Instances in the public cloud or perform cloud-based restores of on-premises backups.

Veeam Agent for Linux FREE now includes:

  • Source-side encryption 1 : Encrypt your Linux backup data at the source, before it leaves the protected computer, which protects your data in flight and at rest on any backup target.
  • Snapshotless backup mode 1 : Back up critical files from any mounted file system.
  • Console UI or command line: Choose between a user-friendly UI or a more traditional Linux command line (via the veeamconfig command)
  • Integration with Veeam Backup & Replication™ 2 : Take full advantage of Veeam backup repositories as target locations and leverage the existing capabilities for file-level recovery.
  • Configure network 3 : Obtain network settings from a DHCP server to allow you to browse to a backup on a network share.
  • Reboot 3 : Initiate a reboot of your Linux cloud Instance, on-premises server or workstation.

Linux Server

You can add a Linux server with local, directly attached storage or mounted NFS as a backup repository. The storage can be a local disk, directly attached disk-based storage (such as a USB hard drive), NFS share, or iSCSI/FC SAN LUN in case the server is connected into the SAN fabric.

A Linux repository with single-use credentials and the immutability feature provides additional protection for your backup files. For more information, see Hardened Repository .

Linux Backup Repository Deployment

To communicate with a Linux-based repository, Veeam Backup & Replication uses two Veeam Data Movers that are responsible for data processing and transfer:

For more information about Veeam Data Movers communication with a Linux-based server, see Veeam Data Movers .

Veeam Data Mover establishes a connection with the source-side Data Mover on the backup proxy, enabling efficient data transfer over LAN or WAN.

Linux Server

A machine performing the role of a repository must meet the following requirements:

  • The role of the repository can be assigned to a Linux machine (physical or virtual). The machine must meet the system requirements. For more information, see System Requirements .
  • You must add the machine to the Veeam Backup & Replication console as a managed server.
  • If Veeam Data Mover is non-persistent, Veeam Backup & Replication uses the SSH protocol to communicate with Linux backup repositories and requires the SCP utility in Linux repositories. Make sure that the SSH daemon is properly configured and SCP utility is available on the Linux host.
  • If you want to use Fast Clone in the Linux backup repository, the machine must also meet requirements listed in the Fast Clone section.

You can place both repositories (hardened and standard) on one Linux server only if you used single-use credentials when adding the host. Standard repository is a repository added with persistent credentials and disabled immutability. For more hardened repository limitations, see Requirements and Limitations .

Deploying Veeam Agent for Linux

To deploy Veeam Agent for Linux using setup files generated by Veeam Backup & Replication, perform the following operations:

Deploying Veeam Agent for Linux

TIP

You can also find detailed instructions on the Veeam Agent deployment in the readme.txt file that is available among the setup files generated by Veeam Backup & Replication .

To install Veeam Agent for Linux and all the required components, do the following:

Keep in mind that you must use Veeam Agent setup files that are generated by Veeam Backup & Replication after the protection group for pre-installed Veeam Agents is created. To learn more, see Specifying Packages .

  1. Navigate to the directory where you have saved setup files and install Veeam Agent . This procedure is similar to the installation of the Veeam Agent for Linux in the offline mode. For details, see the Installing Veeam Agent for Linux in Offline Mode section in the Veeam Agent for Linux User Guide.

Keep in mind that if you use the APT package manager and the installation command reports that some dependencies for package not installed, run the following command instead:

After that, repeat the Veeam Agent installation procedure.

To configure Veeam Agent for Linux, you must apply connection settings from the configuration file that you obtained when the protection group for pre-installed Veeam Agents was created. To do this, run the following command from the directory where Veeam Agent setup files are located:

veeamconfig mode setVBRsettings —cfg .xml

where is a name of the protection group for pre-installed Veeam Agents. Alternatively, you can specify the full path to the configuration file passed with the — cfg option.

Consider that the connection between Veeam Backup & Replication and Veeam Agent is not persistent. Veeam Agent synchronizes with Veeam Backup & Replication every 6 hours. After you apply new backup policy settings in the Veeam Backup & Replication console, Veeam Agent will get these settings during the next synchronization.

To synchronize Veeam Agent immediately, run the following command on the Veeam Agent computer:
