Looking for VID HD Audio Via Technologies Inc.

I am looking for the following drivers for the Asus P7P55D-E Pro motherboard. Via HD Audio Codec, Via VT1828s 8- channel high definition Audio codec. I have Tried Asus, Via technologies inc., and a google search with no luck. Anyone else got any ideas what else I could try to get the drivers I need.

Ok I see why you ask for this information you wanted to see how many logical sound cards I have on my computer, and what type they are. Am I right? ok when I run the sound applet ( app tells which sound cards Linux Mint recognizes) It recognizes card-2 Nividia GF110 High Definition Audio Controller, and card-3 Razer USA diver, but not card-1 Intel 5 Series/3400 Series High Definition Audio. So I think the problem I am having as to do with card-1.

I can see that there are drivers loaded for each of your audio devices, including the onboard Intel device. Have you checked the system BIOS to see if onboard audio is auto-disabled or deprecated on account of usb audio ?
I also suggest checking your audio settings using PulseAudio Volume Control instead of the Sound applet in the panel. If you don’t have it in your menu, you can install pavucontrol via Synaptic Package Manager.

I installed Pulse Audio Volume Control like you suggested, ran PulseAudio and Configured the device I wanted to use, it know works. So know when I want to change sound device, I startup PulseAudio, pick which device I want, it should work. Thanks for the help.

VIA VT1708 HD Audio Codec Driver 0.84 for Linux

This application note describes how to install the audio driver for HD audio controllers in VIA South Bridges VT8237A, VT8251, CX700(M/M2), and HD audio codec VT1708. A second option is also explained — to patch the VIA HD Audio Driver for Debian 4.0r0, Fedora Core 6, Mandriva 2007.1, OpenSuSE 10.2, Ubuntu Desktop 6.10/7.04 and kernel 2.6.19-rc6. Step-by-step instructions for each method and a comparison of their respective features are provided.

In this section, it teaches users how to install the driver in Debian 3.1r4 (2.6 kernel), Fedora Core 5, Mandriva 2006.0/2007.0 and Red Flag 5 Linux and how to patch the driver into Fedora Core 6, OpenSuSE 10.2, Ubuntu Desktop 6.10 and kernel 2.6.19-rc6. Before installing or patching the HD audio driver, please make sure the kernel-devel RPM packages in Fedora series and kernel-source RPM packages in Mandriva and OpenSuSE series have been installed. For Mandriva 2006.0/2007.0, users need to remove directory “/lib/modules//kernel/sound/core” first.

Can’t get HD Audio with VIA VT1705/VT1708s

I installed Ubuntu a week ago, and I’ve had few problems I couldn’t solve.
However, even after much trying I couldn’t get my motherboard’s onboard audio to output in 5.1 surround like my Windows 7 OS can. Ubuntu simply claims my card is Stereo Duplex.
I tried using these drivers that I found online. The instructions didn’t work one hundred percent, but after I somehow got through all the errors and compiled my new kernel I faced a command prompt interface (no graphics of any sort). I deleted my Linux partition, and installed Ubuntu 9.10 Desktop Edition 64-bit fresh.

After that, I remember seeing somewhere that I should install the package «linux-backports-modules-alsa-generic meta-package» to enable 5.1 audio on my card. After installing it, the ALSA mixer had a new option at the bottom left: (I’m new to this forum, so I can’t figure out spoiler tags to not break the page width, sorry)

I checked the VIA website, and they say Smart 5.1 is a way to use the Line-out, Line-in, and Microphone ports as your three 3.5 mm outputs. This is what Windows 7 does for my surround system, and it works.
Of course, I enable it and turn everything on. I try a sound test (something in the terminal, I can’t remember what) and it claims it’s playing noise on all my outputs one at a time. I still only hear noise on front left and front right.
I try rebooting, making sure Smart 5.1 is enabled, and testing again but to no luck. I can’t hear any surround sound.

So now here I am, my first forum post! Hopefully somebody will be able to work me through this! Thanks a bunch in advance!

Here are my system specs, if it’ll help:
Operating Systems: Ubuntu 9.10 Desktop Edition x64, Windows 7 x64 Ultimate
Motherboard: ASRock N68-S
Audio Codec: VIA VT1705 or VIA VT1708s (Not sure, Windows 7 says it’s VT1705, Ubuntu 9.10 says it’s VT1708s)
CPU: AMD Athlon X2 Regor II 250
Video Card: nVidia 9500 GT
Hard Drive: 640 GB WD Caviar Black Edition
Partitioned to dual boot Win 7/Ubuntu with GRUB2
PSU: Eagle VoltasX 550 Watt

I’m having that exact same issue that you’re describing. As it turns out, we’re using the same motherboard (ASRock N68-S).

As near as I can figure it, the audio chip on this board seems to have 2 parts — VT1708S, which controls a 2 channel mode, and VT1705, which is a separate part of the same chip that controls HD audio. Apparently, they require separate audio drivers. I haven’t had much luck in finding info about the VT1705 part of the chip. I suspect that the problem might be that it relies heavily on the windows driver software to work and there probably isn’t an equivalent Linux driver for it out there. I’ll probably have to take a look at the kernel audio driver list to see if VT1705 is listed, but I’m not expecting it to be.

Now that I know there’s someone else out there looking for an answer to this particular issue, I’ll keep researching it. If I don’t find a solution, I have a SoundBlaster Audigy SE PCI card lying around that I was previously using on my old PC that delivers HD audio flawlessly in Ubuntu.
