How to install the elegant mintMenu on Xfce
Foreword
First, this is just a way of saying «Thank You» to Linux Mint as the information provided here (at least initially) has been merely copied (from a forum contribution indicated below), pasted, reformatted and a little rephrased by a novice user preferring the great elegance of mintMenu at the expense of just a little loss from speed
Second, this novice LinuxMint user has managed to get the mintMenu working on xfce4 panel but could not solve the puzzle (probably due to the fact these instructions date back to June 2007) presented in item 5 (luckily using Nautilus) and later found a workaround also in the Forum, adding it at the bottom as well.
1) Run this in Terminal :
sudo apt-get gnome-main-menu mintmenu xfce4-xfapplet-plugin
2) Right click on the Xfce Panel and select Add New Items.
3) Select Xfapplet and then select mintMenu .
4) Right click on the new mintMenu item and select Move to drag it to where you want.
5) E dit using r ight -c lick Preferences . Enter your Preferrences (treat entries following = sign as examples only) u nder mintMenu —> plugins :
applications:
execute_app = thunar
search_command = catfish SEARCH_STRING —path=/
places:
desktop_cmd = thunar /home/YOURUSERNAME/Desktop
execute_app = thunar
home_cmd = thunar
trash_cmd = thunar trash:///
system-management:
control_center_cmd = /usr/lib/linuxmint/mintConfig/xfcemintConfig_frontend.py
lock_screen_cmd = xflock4
quit_cmd = xfce4-session-logout
terminal_cmd = xfterm4
EDIT: Thanks to dasunsrule32 @ http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=16937, I can provide an alternative way of implementing the customisations above as follows:
sudo gedit /usr/lib/linuxmint/mintMenu/plugins/system_management.py
(i) Find » gnome-control-center » and replace with «xfce4-settings-manager» (or another alternative like above)
(ii) Find «gnome-session-save —shutdown-dialog» and replace with «xfce4-session-logout» (or another alternative like above)
(iii) And so on.
6) Now right click on mintMenu and click Reload Plugins .

[SOLVED] Widgets in Linux Mint
Post by Pascal Illustrator » Wed Jan 02, 2019 11:35 am
Hello,
In Mac OS there’s a functionality named ‘Dashboard’. It brings up all kind of mini-applications named ‘widgets’. You can expand this by adding more widgets. Windows has something similar, but calls it ‘Gadgets’.
I wondered if there’s also a functionality in Linux Mint that has Widgets or mini applications?

Some are pre-installed, some are not. Open ‘applets’ and ‘desklets’, respectively, from your menu and see what you can find.

Thank you. I found it in my preferences, but how can I launch these mini applications? Is it with a shortcut?

Desklets get added to the desktop and applets get added to the panel. So that’s where you’ll see them once you add them.

I had to search for a while since my system is in Dutch and there the names are sometimes different, but I found it.
What I am searching for is a widget that converts measures like weight, distance, valuta, . but so far I didn’t found one.

I don’t know of a widget for that, per se. But I do know that the standard calculator application can do a whole lot of useful conversions. When you start it up, it will generally be in Basic Mode, but you should really give the other options a try!
If it works for you, you can add a launcher to your panel so you can start it real quick.

I don’t know of a widget that does that, but I know of a program that does that: ConvertAll. It will convert between just about units of measurement you want. If you wanted to convert between, say, lightyears per millisecond and furlongs per fortnight, it will do it. (One lightyear per millisecond is equal to 5.6886282E+22 furlongs per fortnight)
