VirtualBox 3D Acceleration issues

Post by sydneyking » Thu Apr 20, 2017 10:32 pm

Hi! I am having an issue and I’m not sure what the problem may be.

I an running Linux Mint 18.1 Cinnamon x64 as a guest OS in VirtualBox with Windows 10 Pro x64 as a host. I have the VB Guest Additions installed, however when I turn on 3D acceleration in VirtualBox I get graphics corruption on applications that I assume are using 3D acceleration. Programs such as the Atom text editor and Spotify seem to exhibit these problems. What happens is the interface in the program appears as just black/ gray boxes, and when I minimize the application, the graphics corruption stays on screen until the program is closed. I am not quite sure what to do here. I can probably live without 3d acceleration but I would like to see if this can be fixed. I also tried Ubuntu and the same exact thing happens.

Thanks! Any help is much appreciated.

I had something similar happen and the fix for me was to go into settings for the VM and go to System. Now go to Acceleration and change Paravirtualization Interface from Default to Legacy then click on OK.

Which version of VB? Taken from which source?
Which version of the guest additions are installed? You can find that out, if you press inside of the running VM host-n; it is listed there.

The version I am using is 5.1.20 r114628

Setting Paravirtualization Interface to Legacy didn’t do anything for me.

Hello, sorry I have not checked here in a while because I have been very busy lately :/

Setting Paravirtualization Interface to None also does not work. None of those settings fix the issue.

So the guest additions version are in this case indeed top secret. There is nothing, what can be done about such mystery protection. Case finished from my site. There are better ways to entertain me.

When asking for help and someone asks you to post the result of some information, it’s polite to put ALL the information requested.

What I posted was the guest additions version. I’m not sure what I did wrong here. The VB version and guest additions version is the exact same. And it was downloaded straight from the official website.
Edit: I’ve since updated to 5.1.22r115126, same issue is happening. That’s the version number for both VirtualBox and the guest additions. I apologize for any confusion.

If Cinnamon does not complain about 3D acceleration (with a message that it is using software rendering mode), it means, that 3D acceleration does work. It is known, that some applications do not properly work with 3D acceleration is activated. In this case you have no choice than disabling 3D acceleration (but this will bring Cinnamon to software rendering mode). Note, that 3D acceleration is noted in VB officially as experimental.

In this case you should use another desktop like Mate, which does not 3D acceleration on its own.

How can I activate Mint 3D acceleration on a virtualbox machine?

I do have a Linux Mint 18.3 VM hosted on a window 10 machine. My VM can not boot when 3D acceleration is set into the virtualbox machine settings. It stays stuck on an empty command line screen. If I hit alt-f4 to go into command line mode and try to startx I get the following error: xf86EnableIOPorts: Failed to set IOPL for I/O . After looking around, I found a work-around to start the desktop from there. As superuser, I need to chmod u+s /usr/bin/xinit and startx again and it works. However, each time I restart the machine, I still have to follow the steps above or the same error persists. Being not very knowledgeable in linux inwards, I wondered it someone could infer a permanent fix from my temporary one. EDIT: I just re-created a VM from scratch on a new disk, with the same setup. I can confirm that it was not specific to the other VM since I have the same issue. Still no 3D acceleration. I am wondering, why, if there is a workaround, VirtualBox folks have not fixed this already.

This may be your problem: The Guest Additions which come with VirtualBox 5.2.6 and 5.1.32 do not work properly on Linux guests with 3D enabled. There are updated versions available here: https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads

Indeed you are right. It did the trick. I didn’t notice that line on the download page. It all works with 5.2.7. Thank you sir 🙂

Linux Mint on VirtualBox – Enable 3D Acceleration

Just spent a bit of time installing the latest Linux Mint (14.1) on VirtualBox and struggling to get the VirtualBox 3D acceleration to work correctly. This causes the window manager to fall back to software rendering (yuk); to see if your machine is currently using software rendering run inxi -G and check for Gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe (LLVM 0x300).

To get the full 3D acceleration from VirtualBox ensure that 3D acceleration has been enabled from the settings menu and a decent amount of video RAM is available, I have it running quite well with 56MB of RAM. Load up Linux Mint and install the VirtualBox additions from the devices menu. Ignore the warnings about it already being installed and carry on. Reboot the virtual box and run inxi -G again, it should now show something similar to this –

Graphics: Card: InnoTek Systemberatung VirtualBox Graphics Adapter
X.Org: 1.13.0 drivers: ati,vboxvideo (unloaded: fbdev,vesa) Resolution: 1920×1200@60.0hz
GLX Renderer: Chromium GLX Version: 2.1 Chromium 1.9

I only get this problem on a fresh install of Linux Mint. It’s supposed to be bundled with the VirtualBox guest additions but I guess they don’t always work as they should.

Bonjour,
Thank you for your procedure. That works since the window showing issue about 3D acceleration dispears. Nevertheless, wallpaper becomes black and the office is lost….
Regards,
