how to get the ipaddress of a virtual box running on local machine [closed]

I need to connect to my virtual box running on my local machine to transfer files from my local system to VM by using WinSCP. How do I find the IP address? When I go to the settings and network tab, there I find something related to IP, but when I use that, it says cannot find or invalid.

When I start mine using vagrant, it shows the ip address on boot time. Do you have console access to the vbox so you can type command to get ip address?

In case you want to get the ip without going to your vm you can use VBoxManage guestproperty enumerate | grep IP on host machine as stated here forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=36592

Login to virtual machine use below command to check ip address. (anyone will work)

If you used NAT for your virtual machine settings(your machine ip will be 10.0.2.15), then you have to use port forwarding to connect to machine. IP address will be 127.0.0.1

If you used bridged networking/Host only networking, then you will have separate Ip address. Use that IP address to connect virtual machine

Please refer this site, to setup port forwarding. trainenv.blogspot.in/2016/03/… IP Address 127.0.0.1 is by default assigned to your host machine. When connection comes to this IP, it will forward the request to Guest machine. So that you can access guest machine through host machine.

How to assign static IP to Ubuntu Server (VirtualBox)

Please see my setup here: NAT is set up here: Host-only adapter is enabled here: network for virtual box is configured here: then I set up interface on the server like this: then I run sudo netplan apply and I should be all set. I can ping myself on the server: but can’t ping the server from my local computer: Hence the network isn’t actually connected to the Internet. If you did so, your IP address should change and should be in the same network as hosted computer. Is that right ?

Well . no, because I assigned static IP of 192.168.56.102 to the server should share the name network with the host. So the IP of the server is unchanged. But I need the server to have access to the Internet from host. Bridged connection is set but didn’t make difference to the virtual machine.

The answer is Yes if you assign a static ip from your router for your virtual box virtual machine. (This need specific ip address from your local router).

The answer is No if you aren’t assign a static ip from your router for your virtual box virtual machine.

If not how can we access the virtual machine via our laptop terminal ?

This is the method how to do that !

Keep in mind this is temporary method and all settings are reset after you restart the virtual machine . This will also enable internet access on your virtual box sever.

According to your question ,

First configure NAT (Network Address Translation) setting for Network Adapter 1

Then configure Host-only Adapter setting for Network Adapter 2

After that manual IP address assignment

Here don’t enable the DHCP server as below

These are the settings for your server virtual machine hardware (assume that your are using a Ubuntu server virtual machine) !

After that install the Ubuntu server on the virtual hard disk .

After you log on to the Ubuntu server (i think you provided administrative credentials ) , you have to do the followings.

First issue the following command to see the ip settings assigned for network adapters on the virtual Ubuntu server

On my test server there are eth0 , eth1 network interface cards , I have selected eth1 for this because eth0 is already assigned with an ip address by system default.

On Ubuntu server switch to the root user as ,

Then the appear root user prompt as below ,

Then issue the following command

 root@vagrant:~# ifconfig eth1 192.168.188.101 netmask 255.255.255.0 

Once you done this exit from the root user by typing exit

Here don’t turn off the virtual machine !

Then minimize the virtual machine and fireup a local terminal

After that issue ifconfig on the local terminal . Here you can see the various network adapters including the host only adaptor.

Then try to ping the ip address of the virtual machine as below

user@user-laptop:~$ ping 192.168.188.101 

If this ping is success you can now ssh to the your virtual Ubuntu server as below

user@user-laptop:~ ssh ubuntu@192.168.188.101 

Here you can provide the virtual server password .

So I think this method is worked for you if you are interested .

Использую 4 версию VirtualBox на Win 7 виртуалит Ubuntu Server 11.04, но не могу понять, как к ней приконектиться по PuTTy?
OpenSSH стоит, фаервол на Win 7 отключал.

Для начала, только что установленная Ubuntu server 11.04 получает IP автоматически. А нам надо статический IP, поэтому в каждом из уроков Для просмотра ссылок Вы должны быть авторизованы на форуме. , Вы можете наблюдать такие главы как настройка сети.
VirtualBox — Универсальная машина, для которой вы можете выбрать сразу несколько сетевых адаптеров в одной машине. Но для настройки вполне достаточно и одного адаптера. К сожалению на данный момент я имею VirtualBox 3.2.12 (Windows), но больших отличий по сравнению с 4 версии нет. Поэтому я покажу принцип работы на примере версии 3.2.12.
В настройках каждой виртуальной машины есть свои отдельный параметры, которые мы легко можем изменять, например выбираем необходимую нам машину (например Ubuntu server 11.04, но не запускаем ее), в правой части находим пункт Сеть , в открывшемся окне нас сразу же перебросит на эту вкладку, где мы указываем вид адаптера:
NAT — универсальная система соединения, использует свои настройки маршрутизации, поэтому не надо ждать что указаный в настройках самой системы сервера будет подключать под NAT.
Сетевой мост — для меня это самый простой и наглядный способ соединения сразу нескольких виртуальных машин к одному шлюза. Например шлюз 192.168.1.1, домашний компьютер имеет адрес 192.168.1.2, а серверу можно присвоить 192.168.1.3 (сетевой шлюз — это все равно что стоит хаб на котором может быть подключено сколько угодное число виртуальных машин) При использовании такого вида подключения имеется при правильной настройке сервер получает интернет, а так же доступ по сети, при этом используется реальная сетевая карта вашего компьютер.
Внутренняя сеть — дает доступ только для компьютера на котором стоит виртуальная машина.
Виртуальный адаптер — интересная функция, больше подойдет для экспериментов чем для реальных условий эксплуатации.
В твоем случае необходимо настроить Сетевой мост и указать адаптер Вашего компьютера, для доступа сервера в интернет, этот адаптер обязательно должен быть подключен к интернету, как основной источник интернета рабочей машины .

Заходишь в консоли под своим логином и паролем и тут же высвечивается IP адрес сервера. (Внимание эта фишка появилась только с 11.04 версии Ubuntu server). C правильно настроенной сетью и установленным SSH сервером в системе PuTTy подключиться именно по этому адресу. Только не забудь указать в PuTTy кодировка UTF8 (необходимо для правильного отображения русских символов).

How to configure static ip in Ubuntu running on virtual box?

I am using Ubuntu on VirtualBox in Dell Laptop and wanted to know how I can configure the static IP in Ubuntu so that I can browse internet on Ubuntu and also use putty. I am using data card for internet. Currently in /etc/network/interfaces the settings is as follows:

If host is connected to the internet, then why don’t you just go into the VM settings and enable WIFI?

Do you want to browse the internet and use putty, or do you specifically want to have a static IP address? Your question seems to suffer from the XY-problem.

Find your actual network configuration by typing

You should see something similar to

eth0 Link encap Ethernet HWaddr 00:00:00:00:00:00 inet addr:192.168.1.10 Bcast 192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 

Edit the networking config file by typing

sudo nano /etc/network/interfaces 

auto eth0 iface eth0 inet dhcp 

auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 192.168.1.115 netmask 255.255.255.0 gateway 192.168.1.1 dns-nameservers 8.8.8.8 192.168.1.1 

The actual change may need to be modified to something more specific for you. IE if you’re routers IP is 10.0.0.1 then your gateway and dns-nameservers would need to be configured accordingly. I set the address to 192.168.1.115 because the odds of you getting enough connections to reach that IP and have any conflict from DHCP are slim to none. Let me know if this works for you. Good luck.
