This guide provides information about installing, configuring, and using VMware Horizon ® Client™ software on a Linux client system. This guide is written for administrators and end users of Horizon Client for Linux.
You can also access this guide through the Help action in the Horizon Client user interface.
Horizon Client communicates with a server, which acts as a broker between the client device and remote desktops and published applications. You enter credentials into Horizon Client , the server authenticates your credentials, and then the server finds the remote desktops and published applications that you are entitled to use.
Scope of This Guide
This guide provides instructions for installing, configuring, and using the Horizon Client for Linux product that VMware makes available.
This guide does not include instructions for installing the Linux operating system on a client system. For information about installing Linux, refer to the instructions provided by the maker of your Linux distribution.
Several VMware partners offer thin and zero client devices for VMware Horizon deployments. The features that are available for each thin or zero client device, and the operating systems supported, are determined by the vendor, the model, and the configuration that an enterprise chooses to use. Such details are not documented in this guide. For information about the vendors and models for thin and zero client devices, see the VMware Compatibility Guide.
How to Use This Guide
To get the help that you need from this guide, refer to the chapters that apply to your role and use case.
For end users and administrators — If you are an end user running Horizon Client to connect to remote desktops and applications and work in remote sessions, see the following chapters. These chapters also contain information relevant to administrators.
For administrators — If you are an administrator setting up a VMware Horizon deployment that includes Linux client systems, see the following chapters. These chapters are written for experienced system administrators who are familiar with virtual machine technology and data center operations.

You can download and run a Horizon Client installer bundle from the VMware Downloads page. This installer contains modules for features such as USB redirection, Real-Time Audio-Video, smart card, and client drive redirection. To upgrade Horizon Client for Linux, you first uninstall the existing version from the client system and then run the installer bundle for the new version.
Note: On most Linux distributions, the Horizon Client installer bundle starts a GUI wizard. You can also run the installer with the command-line —console parameter to start the command-line wizard.
Prerequisites
- Verify that the client system runs a supported operating system. See System Requirements for Linux Client Systems.
- Become familiar with the installation options. See Installation Options.
- Verify that you have root access on the client system.
- Verify that VMware Workstation is not installed on the client system.
- If you plan to use the RDP display protocol to connect to a remote desktop, verify that you have the appropriate RDP client installed. See System Requirements for Linux Client Systems.
- Uninstall any earlier version of the Horizon Client software. See Uninstall Horizon Client for Linux.
- If you plan to use the command-line installer, become familiar with the Linux command-line installation options. See Command-Line Installation Parameters for the Linux Client.
- Confirm that version 2.x or 3.x of Python is installed on the client system.
Note: To ensure that Horizon Client has access to all the required Python modules, use the Python package installed by default with your Linux distribution. Avoid installing Python manually, because a manual installation might not include all the required modules. If both Python 2.x and Python 3.x are installed on the system, Horizon Client uses the Python 3.x package.
As part of the installation process, the installer runs a scan of the system libraries to determine whether the system is compatible with Horizon Client , although you can select to skip the scan.
Procedure
- On the Linux client system, download the Horizon Client installer file from the Horizon Client Product Downloads page at http://www.vmware.com/go/viewclients.
In the installer filename, YYMM represents the marketing version number, x.x.x represents the internal version number, and yyyyyyy represents the build number. arch represents the CPU instruction set architecture.
chmod +x VMware-Horizon-Client-YYMM-x.x.x-yyyyyyy.arch.bundle
sudo ./VMware-Horizon-Client-YYMM-x.x.x-yyyyyyy.arch.bundle
sudo sh ./VMware-Horizon-Client-YYMM-x.x.x-yyyyyyy.arch.bundle
sudo ./VMware-Horizon-Client-YYMM-x.x.x-yyyyyyy.arch.bundle --console
sudo sh ./VMware-Horizon-Client-YYMM-x.x.x-yyyyyyy.arch.bundle --console
Note: In addition to —console , you can use other command-line parameters and environment variables to control installation settings such as the installation of optional components. See Command-Line Installation Parameters for the Linux Client.
- Specify whether to allow the installer to register and start installed services after the installation.
Allowing the installer to complete these tasks means that you do not need to manually start USB redirection services every time you reboot.
Results
You can find log information about the installation in /tmp/vmware-root/vmware-installer- pid .log .
What to do next
Start Horizon Client and verify that you can log in to the correct virtual desktop. See Connect to a Remote Desktop or Published Application.

You can download and run a Debian ( .deb ) installer for Horizon Client from the VMware Downloads page. To upgrade Horizon Client , you first uninstall the existing version from the client system and then run the installer for the new version.
Note: The Debian installer and bundle installer conflict with each other, and you must choose only one installer type. Horizon Client does not support mixed installations that involve using both the Debian installer and the bundle installer on the same client system.
Prerequisites
- Verify that the client system runs a supported operating system. See System Requirements for Linux Client Systems.
- Verify that you have root access on the client system.
- Verify that VMware Workstation is not installed on the client system.
- If you plan to use the RDP display protocol to connect to a remote desktop, verify that you have the appropriate RDP client installed. See System Requirements for Linux Client Systems.
- If you are using a thin client, confirm that libgtk 3.14 or later is installed on the system. If needed, obtain version 3.14 or later of the libgtk library and install it on the thin-client system.
Installation Procedure
The Debian installer allows you to install the following features of Horizon Client on a Debian-based system:
- Core client features, including the ability to connect to remote desktops and applications
- Serial port redirection
- Scanner redirection
The following limitations apply to the Debian installer:
- You must use the default installation path encoded in the installer. Custom installation paths are not supported.
- The Debian installer and bundle installer conflict with each other. Horizon Client does not support mixed installations that involve using both the Debian installer and the bundle installer on the same client system.
Use the following procedure to download and run the installer.
- On the Linux client system, download the Horizon Client Debian installer file from the Horizon Client Product Downloads page at http://www.vmware.com/go/viewclients. The name of the file is VMware-Horizon-Client- YYMM — x.x.x — yyyyyyy .x64.deb . In the installer filename, YYMM represents the marketing version number, x.x.x represents the internal version number, and yyyyyyy represents the build number.
- In a Terminal window, run the installer using the package manager of your choice (commonly dpkg or apt ).
You can find log information about the installation in /tmp/vmware-root/vmware-installer- pid .log .
Start Horizon Client and verify that you can log in to the correct virtual desktop. See Connect to a Remote Desktop or Published Application.
