How to Fix Drag and Drop Not Working in Ubuntu 20.04 on VMware

In some cases, when you trying to drag and drop a file from the Window host to the Ubuntu guest in VMware. As you can see, this feature is not working as expected.

Even the Open VM Tools was installed in the Ubuntu guest.

The root of the issue is Ubuntu 22.04 graphical desktop defaults to Wayland. There are some know issues with DnD on Wayland that we are tracking internally.

The solutions

Until those issues are resolved, please try using the Ubuntu on Xorg option in the lower-right corner during login when asked for your password. Make the selection before entering you password.

Once done, trying to drag a file from the host to the guest and it should work now.

Disable Wayland desktop

Alternatively, you can disable Wayland in the configs so that only X11 is used to enabled Autologin on this VM.

1. The default display manager for the GNOME desktop environment is GDM3. Let’s open Terminal then edit it:

sudo nano /etc/gdm3/custom.conf

2. Within this file, look for the line that says #WaylandEnable=false. You can uncomment this line and set it to false to disable it.

# GDM configuration storage # # See /usr/share/gdm/gdm.schemas for a list of available options. . # Uncomment the line below to force the login screen to use Xorg WaylandEnable=false # Enabling automatic login . 

3. After you have made the desired changes, save this file and exit it. You will need to restart GDM3 or reboot your Ubuntu 22.04 desktop for the changes to take effect.

sudo systemctl restart gdm3

As you can see in the below screenshot, the default desktop environment is X11 and the option to switch between desktop was gone.

Drag-drop not working for Ubuntu 20.04 LTS on VMware® Workstation 15 Pro

Enter the following command in terminal to enable drag and drop between virtual machines and the host.

gsettings set org.gnome.nautilus.preferences use-experimental-views false 

Do the following to enable drag and drop between two virtual machines:

1. Open the virtual machine settings editor (VM > Settings), click the Options tab and select Guest isolation.
2. Select Disable drag and drop to and from this virtual machine to disable the feature. Deselect it to enable the feature.

Errors regarding permission turned up and I added «sudo» at the beginning of the commands. Still nothing different!

Go to this path, so you can find your draged files

/var/run/vmblock-fuse/blockdir/ 

for «View» you drag file full path to the terminal window

Just had this same problem where copy and paste stopped working with Workstation Pro 15.5.7 on Win 10 with Ubuntu 20.04 guest. Was working fine until both guest and host had some updates so hard to tell what caused it. The simple fix was a variation from method 2 from this answer.

1. Shut down the guest
2. Go into VM / Settings / Options / Guest Isolation
3. Uncheck both checkboxes (Enable drag and drop, Enable copy and paste) and click OK. Note: that it is not possible to uncheck these boxes unless the VM is stopped
4. Shut down VMware Workstation
5. Start VMware Workstation. Note: there was no need to reboot host
6. For the VM in question, go into VM / Settings / Options / Guest Isolation
7. Check both checkboxes (Enable drag and drop, Enable copy and paste) and click OK
8. Start the guest VM

Copy and paste now works again in both directions.

How to enable Vmware drag and drop on Manjaro VM

After installing Manjaro on Vmware Virtual machine, the first thing we would like have is the installation of VM tools, however, even after that sometimes we would face problem in sharing files or folder directly from host (WIndow, macOS, Linux) to Guest OS i.e Manjaro. Thus, first we have to install a tool and then need activate Vmblock service to make sure everything work smoothely.

Install Open VMware tools on Manjaro Desktop Linux

1. Open Command terminal

Just like Ubuntu, we can also use keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Alt+T to open command terminal in Manjaro Linux . After that run system update command:

2. Install VM Tools on Manjaro Linux

Once the system update to its latest packages, run the below given command to download and install Open VM Tools on Manajro.

sudo pacman -Sy open-vm-tools

3. Enable Vmware Vmblock Fuse Service

Vmblock Fuse service comes along with Open-VM-tools that enables the Drag-and-Drop and Copy-and-Paste functionality on Vmware Workstation player or fusion, so that the user can transfer files from Host to Guest or vice versa.

systemctl enable vmware-vmblock-fuse.service

4. Start Vmblock

systemctl start vmware-vmblock-fuse.service

To ensure it is working correctly check its status.

systemctl status vmware-vmblock-fuse.service

5. Restart system

Once all the steps above performed, restart your Manajro Linux Virtual machine to make the changes into effect. After that you will be able to transfer files with just drag and drop of mouse.

Copy/paste and drag&drop not working in VMware machine with Ubuntu

Suddenly copy/paste stopped working from/to Windows 8 host computer to/from ubuntu virtual machine. Ubuntu restart did not help. I tried command:

sudo apt-get install open-vm-tools 

But got report I have newest version. Guest Isolation settings are enabled. What could be the scenario of fixing this problem?

Note that this is a known issue — there’s an issued with shared files not working in a Linux VM, and it seems similar components of that don’t work with VMware at this time.

I noticed this problem has to do with me using a different window manager. VM shared clipboard works fine using gdm3, but when I switched to DWM shared desktop no longer worked

I had the same problem and found that this can be fixed by executing the following commands:

1. sudo apt-get autoremove open-vm-tools
2. Install VMware Tools by following the usual method ( Virtual Machine —> Reinstall VMWare Tools )
3. Reboot the VM
4. sudo apt-get install open-vm-tools-desktop
5. Reboot the VM, after the reboot copy/paste and drag/drop will work!

I found I didn’t need to install VMware Tools. Doing an apt-get of open-vm-tools, then open-vm-tools-desktop, and then restarting worked for me.

I tried the approach suggested by solution101 above, but it didn’t work for me. This is how I solved the problem:

1. Open Terminal
2. sudo apt install open-vm-tools-desktop
3. restart the guest operating system

This seems to have fixed the copy-and-paste issue for me.

This is copied verbatim from a vmware community forum:

1. Go into VM / Settings / Options / Guest Isolation
2. UNCHECK bothcheckboxes (Enable drag and drop, Enable copy and paste) and click OK.
3. Shut down the guest, and shut down VMware Workstation
4. Reboot the host computer
5. Run VMware Workstation but do not launch the guest yet.
6. Go into VM / Settings / Options / Guest Isolation for the guest, and
7. CHECK both checkboxes
8. Power On the guest.

@AlaaM. Perhaps they have removed the feature? I no longer run VMWare, but instead am using KVM/QEMU for virtual machines.

The best and working solution is restarting your VMWare application (Workstation, Fusion, etc.), not the VM itself. (provided, of course, that you have installed the VMWare tools already.)

In my case I also needed to restart the VMWare Workstation Server service (vmware-hostd.exe process). Just restarting VMWare application was not enough.

In my case, somehow the guest start-up job running the VMware User Agent was removed from my xfce session autostart. You need to run /usr/bin/vmware-user-suid-wrapper at login

Same with KDE 5.25. It worked fine in KDE 5.24, but now this needs to be manually run at startup it seems. Unfortunately just running it via KDE’s autostart doesn’t seem to fix the issue.

running /usr/bin/vmware-user-suid-wrapper worked for me after trying @Charles Green (worked for me before but not this time)

You can’t uncheck the checkboxes while the VM is running; they are disabled. If you do this when the VM is not running, there is no effect (VMWare Workstation 12 Pro).

I can see how old this post is, but I noticed something relevant; it wasn’t even Ubuntu. Apparently «Shared folders» must be enabled prior to installing open-vm-tools — also had open-vm-tools-desktop already installed and nothing worked. Reinstalling both packages does the job, seemingly when shared folder were enabled; this works instantly. With apt-get :

sudo apt-get install open-vm-tools open-vm-tools-desktop --reinstall 

sudo dnf reinstall open-vm-tools open-vm-tools-desktop 

I’d assume that when enabling «shared folder» before the OS install, it should work out of the box.
